I apologize if this is the wrong spot, but is there a way to make exploration mode the default when I launch the game?  Thanks.

go into options and access the mode tab of graphics/gameplay cant remember which in one of those you will see the tab for exploration mode - simply accessing the tab and accepting the settings has always seemed to do the trick for me. but - you might want to adjust things just for you to be sure it takes. like i said it isnt an exact science but it does indeed work for me

'Tis me understandin it be in the Options section, proper, matey. W'out accessin' any t'other tabs, thar be a spot fer selectin' yer preferred camera controls and fer settin' some o'those controls' functions, right 'n proper as ye'd 'spect ta have 'em. I may be a bit off me navigational charts as ta the exact location, but I'm certain sure they be somewheres in that region o'the seas.
