On a sidenote, Costin's plan makes me think of Karl XII, who single-handedly ruined Sweden's dominance over the Baltic.

Attacking Russia, noob mistake. *shakes head sadly*

Many rulers and leaders ruined their nations, despite the raw potential, because of plans like this.

Moderation is a virtue and I contend that most great founders were relatively moderate in their means and goals. And their greatness is often ruined because some wanted more and fast.

If he just wouldn't have invaded Russia, take Poland and be pleased damnit!

*sighs and imagines what could have been*

The way I imagine it is that sees the newly formed Coalition as a direct threat to her Empire, since she does not take the Darkspawn seriously at all.

Why? How?
Orzammar and Ferelden are already close, by virtue of being that close geographically. In fact, I think Maric had a good relationship with Endrin, if I recall. Regardless, there is a Ferelden ambassador there.

Is Celene going to think that an Orzammar / Ferelden alliance is targetted against her? Why would she?
For one, the dwarves are never interested in the surface, why would they care about fighting Orlais. Second, the dwarves need to export their lyrium and Orlais is their number one importer. So why would she think Orzammar is trying to fight her? Why can't she send ambassadors to ascertain the situation and try to strengthen her relationship with Orzammar instead? People don't go to war just like that.

Celene is supposed to be an enlightened and diplomatic ruler and above all, is smart. For her to go to war simply because Ferelden and Orzammar are better friends, sounds out of character for me.

Celene is listed as being a brilliant leader, she would not invade a country that smashed Orlesian forces before, and took out a blight by themselves.

Either of those would give her pause, but both? Celene most likely will be talking to whoever is in charge of Ferelden and trying to trade.

After the blight its time for Ferelden to concentrate on growth, putting roofs over peoples heads, getting them healthy again and trying to prosper. Not march to a foolish war against every other nation on Thedas all because the chantry is being mean to some poor mages.

Celene had a brilliant plan. Orlesians saving Ferelden from the Blight and in celebration, the two monarchs marry and they become one kingdom that would inevitably be Orlesian-centric over time. That was brilliant.

But the plan failed and can no longer be done. The opportunity passed and I don't see Celene obsessing over Ferelden that doesn't have much to offer anyways.

Well, it could be if Alistair is on the throne.

Hmmm, good point.

Celene would try in that case. But I believe that even unhardened Alistair was brighter than Cailan.
Still, the threat is present there I suppose.

Threat is relative. If the marriage was a non-union, merely an alliance (as in Orlais and Ferelden are still separate, and can not be united under a child, simply making for better relations), it might even sell better.

He's just as open-minded when it comes to Orlais.

... not that it matters in my game. Both Maric's kids are taking the celestial dirtnap

Same.

Here's to hoping that Fergus will give birth to Ferelden's future monarch.

One could only hope that he and Anora shacked up, especially if the Warden's a Cousland who didn't marry her (as it is in my game).

(And for anyone who cites the epilogue powerpoint, a few of those slides have been contradicted already)
