Hi, hoping someone can help with this 'basic' question (I tried a search but couldn't find anything...)

I recently returned to Dragon Age after taking nearly 10 months off, only to find all the new DLC content :D

My question is, Is it better to play the "external" expansions, e.g. Awakenings, Witch Hunt, etc, before starting a new 'Origins' game, in order to unlock items and Specializations first?  Do items and the new Specializations actually transfer from the "external" DLC to an 'Origins' campaign?

I was especially interested in knowing if I play Awakenings, for example, will it allow me the choice of the new Specializations in the 'Origins' campaign?

Items unlocked through achievements in the DLCs will be usable in Origins.

Specializations unlocked in Awakening will not. Therefore, I do not recommend playing Awakening first if you're going to play through Origins also.

I do recommend playing the other DLCs before starting your Origins game just because the items are so nice to have. Just expect Golems of Amgarrak to be very difficult.

But the achievement items will transfer over at any time. So even if you don't play all the DLCs first, you won't lose access to the items. When you get the achievements and reload your Origins game, the items will magically appear in your backpack.

Thanks for the clarification, that helps out a lot!

I started a new Origins game last night, but then I stopped, thinking maybe I should go the DLC route first. Now I think I'll just keep playing until I get my new character to Lvl 18 or thereabouts, then I'll try the DLC to unlock the items, and finally return to finish the Origins' game with the updated items I acquire... bummer about the new Specializations, though :(

Thanks again!

Can anyone tell me if there is a bug that prevents the Provacature (sp?) Armor from Lelianna's Song from appearing in a new Origins game? I have started 2 Origins games after completing that DLC and neither have produced the armor even though the completion of it and the joining of the set appears in the Achievements. I have searched the forums to try to find information on it and have been unsuccessful. I thought maybe it would show up after Lelianna's personal quest but no luck.

No idea why it doesn't show up, but it has nothing to do with Leliana's personal quest.

It's definitely supposed to show up as soon as you have the achievement, and it did for me.

Earned achievement items like Provacture and the Golems Mace have to be activated after you've earned the achievement. In other words, you have to be logged onto the Dragon Age servers and wait until they authourize your DLC items. After that is done, the new items will appear on all new Origins characters as well as any existing characters that you load.

Yes, you could be playing an existing character who is just making their way through Awakening and after you load him up, the Provocature armor and Golems mace will suddenly be in their inventory.

They should be activated by default, but it's worth checking.

I am aware however that Dragon Age depends on a background service running to keep your DLC updated and activated. It sometimes turns off by itself. You can check that it's there by going into control panel, administration and services. There should be one called Dragon Age something listed as started.

Also note that the Battledress of the Provocateur item is not gained my merely finishing Leliana's Song but from earning the Provocateur achievement (by collecting all the masterwork leather pieces).

Same for Golems of Amgarrak. Gain the Sash of Forbidden Secrets by earning the Reaper achievement; gain The High Regard of House Dace by earning the A Secret Stitched Together achievement (by collecting all the pieces of research); gain The Reaper's Cudgel by earning the Grim Reaper achievement.

The items are rewards for achievements and most of the achievements require more than just finishing the DLC.

My achievements tab says the achievement is unlocked and uploaded, but I don't get the Provocateur armor... I manually activated the updater (as it doesn't automatically starts) but that didn't change anything. Any idea?

I didn't have the DLC Offer file when I got the achievement, as most of the official downloads are glitched. I have it now though (from the wiki). Maybe that info can help.

Check the Options > Downloaded Content. Check the enabled content. There's a separate Enabled checkbox for the Battledress in Origins and Battledress in Awakening.
Make sure you're patched to version 1.05.. don't be shy about reapplying the patch, as installing DLC in a certain sequence can cause the game to report as v1.05, but some files have not be updated.
Another way to resolve this issue is to have a save from Leliana's Song in the Chantry, just before Leliana gets the last piece of the Battledress. Make sure you're logged in and acquire the last piece - this will reset the achievement and any new characters will get the item - any games without the item will have it once they are loaded (but your PC must a open slot in his/her inventory)
Last but not least if you're playing on a PC, there is a mod that will allow you to manually add the armor
