Well yes it's clearly stated in the game's codex that the geth are the exception to the norm. Where normally AI is developed by aiming for complex, higher level processes with the purpose to reach AI in the first place (a top-down model, as it is explained in the game), the geth were quite different. In the geth's case, they were never designed to become AI at all. They were simply programmed with the ability to learn to improve upon their own behaviour to optimize their effectiveness. Their becoming an AI through extensive networking was a complete accident. They are a bottom-up model.

I think it's kinda cool actually, since it implies a completely different philosophy and potential for that AI in the future. Normal AI is really little more than sophisticated software version 1.0, then released. The geth AI is a bunch random VI software that basically combined and created itself. Whether on the larger scale there's any practical difference between the two can be debated, of course. But a fitting metaphor would be comparing regular AI to handcrafting a bunch of genes to create a new lifeform with a specific purpose in mind, where the geth would be the equivalent of creating a bunch of cells and random dna, and just having life itself let a new and unpredictable lifeform emerge from it all. The geth as they are were never created for a purpose, they just are, more or less just as free to decide their course in life as the organics.

Of course there's some base code in there that governs their most basic functions, which they cannot override. But is that any different from the instincts programmed universally across all organics (need to survive, feed and reproduce, instincts of fear, anger, joy etc)?

Correct me if I'm wrong but to my memory it's the first time a AI in a game or movie does nothing to try emulate organics races but rather is searching for it's own way.

At least it's a rather uncommon take on the whole AI thing and rather cool.

Yes. EDI for example is your typical AI emulating an organic being, an individual that is just machine based. But Geth are closer to insect Hive-mind without Queen.
