Had not played DAO for several months (80GB slim PS3, Warden's tower DLC is only add-on to std release I believe)

Started it on 9/18/10, new version of DOA (1.5?) automatically applied.  After pressing start button from the main menu, HDD light flickers for some time (~1 minute) then stop and console locks up.  Music stops playing, animation on swords and clouds stop.  Console no longer responds to pressing Playstation button. 

When I turn it off via the power button it flashes the green LED for a while, then issues 3 beeps (not ready to shutdown) and then shuts down.  Often when I next power it up I am asked whether I want to report a failure of my system to shut down to Sony.

After this first occurred, I updated the PS3 (1.34, don't know previous version sorry).  I have also tried the following, none of which have changed the observed symptoms:
1. Deleted some older saved games
2. Console has Wifi turned off (cable only), tried with cable removed
3. Removed DAO game data and re-installed
4. Deleted newest 2 games

Other games (2 tested) appear to work fine.

Any suggestions?
