For one thing I'd suggest updating your game to the latest version (1.23)... it fixes a lot of issues and instability that were still present in the 1.04 version you're indicated you're running.

Did you follow the instructions for installaling digital download versions as disscussed in the  Installing NWN 2 topic for installing NWN 2 and subsequent expansion packs?

Installation in a Nutshell

1. Disable anti virus/malware applications and software-based firewalls (including Windows Firewall). If re-installing, make sure there are no folders or files left from a previous installation of NWN 2 and the related expansions.

2. Install NWN 2 (OC); DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Launch NWN 2 after completing the install and play through the first conversation, then exit the game (required for those using digital download versions, recommended for everyone). If not installing the expansions, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

3. Install MoTB: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. If not installing SoZ, start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

4. Install SoZ: DO NOT update when the installer asks you to, simply exit the install program. Start NWN 2 and select Update from the menu option.

Note: The preferred and recommended method of updating NWN 2 is by use of NWUpdate, which is accessed from the NWN 2 Start Up menu. NWUpdate will automatically download and install the appropriate updates for NWN 2, even from a fresh or new install.

Let's review this in detail.  There were several Geforce drivers this year and last that would not work correctly in NWN2.  The only correct updates are directly from nVIDIA.  Attempting to rely on Windows' own updates and on Microsoft is only another way of continuing to hold onto the old and defective drivers, since Microsoft tends to run 4-6 months behind.

Exactly WHAT new Geforce drivers are now installed?

Given that my 9800 GT is the newest Geforce I've experimented with to any extent, I haven't felt a need to get the very newest of drivers, so if the post - GTX 200 GPUs' drivers are cantankerous about leaving parts of themselves behind, I've missed it. In the past, I've had to use Driver Cleaners for some Radeon drivers, while Geforces seemed less problematic when upgrading / updating . .

from his original post, it looks like he has nvidia drivers 187.66 installed for his mobile chip, which aren't listed on nvidia's website. The latest drivers to fix some of the graphical issues in NWN2 is 258.96. Depending on his laptop mfgr, he may or may not be able to use the drivers from nvidia, but he could try.

Is your GPU overheating? Try getting a program called GPU-Z and monitor your temps.

It is beginning to sound like the GPU may be overheating.

That's pretty hot for a laptop isn't it?

A desktop system, no problem at that temperature, but a laptop... not sure.

78 is hot for a laptop, and can be problematic on desktops with some NVIDIA card models. It should be noted that NVIDIA cards are rated for a maximum of 105 Celcius, this includes the newer Fermi cards as well.

A good cooling matt should help, though I don't know how effective they are over all.
