Are you saying that the outcome of the battle is determined solely by the actions you pick vs the actions of the enemy and running around cutting them with a sword several times has no effect?

Just to be absolutely clear here, running around cutting people with a sword works just fine. But this isn't under your personal control the way it is in an action RPG like ME. Your character will swing his sword, fire his bow, etc., without any further input from you once you have selected a target.

Well, the verdict is in.

The gameplay sounds like this game wouldn't suit me at all.

I did play a similar game where combat was all spells and auto sword swinging/bow shooting/staff blasting.

The limit of my input was picking targets and watching the action unfold while casting spells.

It was like playing on assisted autopilot.

If I'm not controlling the swing of the sword or the shot of the bow, so to speak, I don't have fun.

I guess Dragon Age is ultimately not a game I would enjoy playing.

But thank you everyone for your input and helping me to reach an informed decision.

You do control the weapons, unless you do not have or use Activated talents. For instance, The Arcane Warrior can also wield a sword, but has no other attacks other than auto. But a 2H or DW Warrior has many activated talents from which to choose.

I recommend checking out Talents, Skills, and other gameplay questions on the Wiki.

I'm pretty sure what they mean is more of first-person shooter or Morrowind style combat, where you're actually doing the aiming and all (and feels pretty different from selecting which skills to use). And it is certainly true that this is not the case in Dragon Age.

I myself consider this a good thing in an RPG - though I am also fond of first-person shooters, so I've no problem with that style of combat in general - but if you really prefer it to be you and not the character doing the fighting, as it were, then a game like Dragon Age would probably not be much fun for you.

No; I thank Bioware this is not like any FPS, and while I have Morrowind, I have not played it as NWN1 occupied my time.

But is is not running on auto either. This is one reason my Rogues use activated Talents; to avoid auto-attack boredom.

Well, my handicap with games like this is I don't understand the mechanics.
I have to do tons of research to understand even the most basic of concepts.

To explain, I'm more sci-fi then fantasy.
If you tell me I have to mine 10,000 Palladium to buy an Assault Rifle Upgrade to increase the damage of that weapon, it means a lot more to me then get this Rune to increase your Dexterity attribute.

But I think I'm slowly getting the idea of how this game is played.

Also, the point of this research is to pick a class to play.
I'm currently trying to pick between Warrior and Mage>Arcane Warrior.

Surely you must have had some idea as to what the gameplay was like to be able to decide that you wanted to play either warrior or mage, in the first place, no?  Now, quite some time and research later, the game's not for you?  I just dont get why all the time, research, chat in the games forum, for a game thats not for you?  Couldnt you just type 'DA:O Gameplay' into youtube and see that immediately?

IMO No, You should play Oblivion instead, it's a lot more fun. I hate Dragon Age's gameplay, or do I just not get it, I was hoping for a turn based Knights of the Old Republic style medieval game but what I got is a mess. Seriously do they want me to play this in realtime or tactical pause for every action I choose. I really don't like the way it feels, should have watched gameplay videos before buying instead of basing it on flashy trailers and my own expectations.:(

I picked up DA:O last Thursday because after 8 playthroughs of ME2, I had decided to give that game a rest, but still wanted my Bioware fix.

About 15 hours in, I have to say that it's pretty good. On of the tasks in the early part of the main quest was one of the most intricate, multi-stage tasks I've ever completed in a video game. I guess my one complaint would be that it's very combat-heavy and the rewards that you reap for all that killing come to you a bit slowly. Still early though...

I'm not sure you're completely getting how much there is that you have to do for sucessful combat. If you had to control sword swings manually, everyone would die. You are controllong 4 people, and your mage needs a lot of input from you, or your friendly fire damage will be through the roof. Combat is extremely immersive and involving, imo. Most people have to use pause a lot, because it's impossible to get it all done effectively in real time.

So according to all the Mass Effect players, my taste in combat gameplay is bad.

Its a great game and you can pick it up really cheap now. There are even packs with all the extras on them. I recommend it, you have time to finish it ready to import the world you have helped shape into dragon age 2. Gopher it!

Well, I meant my character's weapon usage, not whatever the heck the other 3 are doing.

In Mass Effect, you just instruct your teammates which gun to use and let them go to town.

As for cheap, I'm not seeing that.

While I was considering making the purchase, I checked the stores to see what the game was going for. It's still at the same price it was when it first came out.

In any case, the decision's been made, I'm not buying this game.

Heck, I'm surprised this thread was ressurected again!

Maybe the moderators should lock it.
