Indeed. The strongest monster in DAO is a toss-up but the toughest encounter is definitely Cauthrien at Howe's palace, unless one exploits the AI by running away. Winning that on nightmare without leaving the room is DAO graduate school.Elhanan wrote...

In DAO, my first encounter with Ser Cauthrian is almost always my greatest challenge. Other encounters have certain weaknesses; her not so much.
So what is the strongest monster?

Thing is, if you want the "Traveler" achivement you WANT to get captured. If you do not, you will not get the Traveler achivement, as that version of Fort Drakon is not the same map as the end game version, in regards to the achivement.

Or you may kill Cauthrian, then get captured. escape, and kill her again. All that is missing is the sprinkles...
Wait! Two Summer swords! SPRINKLES!

For the record, in Origins it's:
Archdemon > High Dragon > Gaxkang > everything else
In Awakening it's:
Queen of the Blackmarsh > everything else

The Queen of the Blackmarsh? Really? Is that official? I usually do the Blackmarsh first, but the High Dragon in the DRagonbone Wastes still registers as the strongest. On Bioware though it's the Archdemon I think *goes to check*Jean-Funk Van Damme wrote...

Gaxkang is the strongest by far, if only he could summon hordes that do as much damage as him..

I still don't understand what's so difficult about Gaxkang, for me both Flemeth and the High Dragon were much more difficult. Ser Cauthrien is also harder than Gaxkang I think. Then again, I only fight Gaxkang very late in the game and Flemeth/High Dragon earlier, so perhaps that makes a difference.
The most difficult battle for me has always been the one outside Fort Drakon with the dragon and 2 emissaries. Probably easy with spell resist gear though.

I agree, the battle outside Fort Drakon was tough, but even at that it wasn't impossible. When I said 'cramped spaces' I was referring to Gaxkang.termokanden wrote...
Lack of space is only really of consequence with certain boss types, like dragons.

I owned all the dragons in the game, and Gaxkang wasn't hard if you have Mana Clash/Cleanse or whatever.
Why do lots of people find Flemeth hard? My sister killed her below level 10 by equipping every party member with a bow and standing as far away as possible lol. It was funny, but close.

Yes Flemeth vs artillary only barrage, is cake, since she is hampered by staying on the small plateau, therefore not being as mobile as the High Dragon.
Harvester is the hardest Encounter, because of it's powerful minions, and then the extremely fast second form it takes. Especially with lack of crowd control.
Gaxkang is so nasty because it is an extremely tight space and you can't keep range and caster far enough away.
Gaxkang might not be the toughest by codex power level the way you encounter him increases his difficulty.

The most enjoyable though was awakenings where you get the staff of the lost. Very nice AI.

Several Awakenings beasties are stonger than any in Origins but they're easy to defeat because the characters are overpowered.
Try your overpowered char from Awakening to fight the harvester, you will get a fearsome battle. Specially in Hard and Nightmare

I know.

I owned him with my rogue, my 2h warrior and my mage without any problems. I'm not trying to be mean here, but he wasn't even anywhere near the dragons in difficulty.
Then again, for no apparent reason (well, randomness) sometimes certain fights can vary wildly in difficulty.

Honestly because the first time I played the game I expected I could switch off my brain and steamroll everything. Worked just fine until I fought Flemeth. Once I realized this, it wasn't exactly difficult. You have to understand I was completely on autopilot when I first played.
Of course you can also realize that Flemeth can't actually move, but I didn't want to exploit that. Anyway forget Flemeth then, consider the High Dragon instead.

Least favorite fight in the game. Plus those undead are much tougher than other undead. Not more interesting, just tougher.

Lol, I know you're not trying to be mean, I personally didn't find Gaxkang hard, and I did it on Nightmare to get the shield but to be honest there were many ''normal'' enemy encounters where I wiped and found harder than the bosses.termokanden wrote...

Actually, how did people find the Brecilian Forest Revenants for the Juggernaut Armor? I struggled as a mage, running around until my mana recharged
