what is riordin there for? i know he gets us into the vault but why does he kill himslef jumping on a dragon and not the archdemon?

Um. ._o That was the Archdemon he jumped on. He saw an opportunity to try and kill it from above in a sneak attack. There is only one dragon ever in the final battle, so I don't really know how you could have mistaken the Archdemon for something else.

In terms of story he's just a device to provide the news that a Grey Warden needs to die to defeat the Archdemon... and to keep us guessing as to whether we'll need to choose between Alistair (or Loghain) and ourselves for said sacrifice.
