I'd like to hear about plot and/or conversation surprises that really caught you off guard while playing DA:O.  For me, some of the biggest surprises came in subsequent playthroughs when I *thought* I knew how the story was going to go and found myself completely caught off guard by a twist in the storyline.

The biggest surprise during my initial playthrough was having my Dalish Elf make Alistair King, only to get dumped in the next scene.  I purposely didn't suggest being Queen during the Landsmeet and fully expected his "we need to talk" speech to be a marriage proposal.  Boy was I wrong!

During subsequent playthroughs, some things that caught me off guard were as follows:

Discovering *I* was the sibling sent to the deep roads in the DN origin story.

Having Alistair desert the Wardens when I chose to spare Logain's life.  And I must confess, the epilogue mentioning him being a drunk broke my heart!

And the most pleasant surprise that I actually just came across in my last playthrough was playing hard to get with Alistair by telling him it was too soon for me to say whether or not I cared for him, only to have him come back with, "Well, is it too soon for this?" and kissing me anyway.  *That* surprise made my day!  :)

So how about y'all?  What were some shocking moments for you within the game?

Morrigan's offer near the end.

Having Kolgrim tell me that I deserved a, "second chance." Oh really? Got you second chance right here!

Watching Isolde scream her head off for her child when I went to kill Connor, and then watching her do it. Um... wow.

Anora's betrayal at the Landsmeet because, even though I go her to agree to marry Alistair, I had told her Loghain had to die. Did not see that one coming at all.

Killing Loghain at Landsmeet in my first game and watching his blood splatter all over Anora.
This was my face. Posted Image
Could never bring myself to do it again after that.

The whole human noble origin was pretty brutal, with your lover getting killed and then discovering the various bodies.
Duncan murder-knifing Jory was a bit of a shocker as well.

This conversation made me laugh the first time I saw it.

And this really took me aback. Some of the Pearl "surprise me" options are a little odd but what the blazes is going on here?

Yeah, the scarecrow thingie... I don't know. I mean, the scarecrow isn't even "equipped for action" so I really don't what the hell was his purpose. Not that I would've wanted for the scarecrow to be equipped in any way...

The HN Origin is a good example. Watching Iona get killed was just brutal and totally unexpected, not to mention having to leave your parents to die.

The DR and the "Warden who kills Archie dies" thing also caught me off guard.

Meeting the spirits of people you dealed in the Origin stores while in the Gauntlet was another powerful moment for me. I wasn't expecting to see Bryce standing there.

Also, while I wasn't surprised by it since I already knew it happened, I was shocked by how much the Tamlen encounter moved me. I was almost in tears through the whole thing.

In the Dwarven Noble Origin, I knew I'd be the second sibling and expected to get framed for murder, but blow me down when I found there WAS an option to actually kill Trian yourself. Great plot twist and the entire plothook for my Dwarven Noble's character.

And little moments when your companions banter. Hearing Wynne had a son and what happened to it was a bit OMG.

But I think the whole bit about Hespith and broodmothers took me quite off-guard. Wasn't expecting something quite that dark to be honest.

Very true.  My only regret was not having any dialog options for that encounter with any of the others after it was over.

@Obadiah -- agreed on all counts!  I was also shocked when Anora betrayed me at Arl Howe's estate (my Warden wasn't the only one screaming "you B*tch!"

@CalJones -- I had my graphics turned down the first few playthroughs so blood spatter in general was a shock to me the first time I saw it.  And that line you depicted from Wynne's dialog is great!  I've only played a male Warden once and that was just long enough to get the achievements for Morrigan and all lovers so I'd not seen that dialog -- too funny!

ooooo!  I haven't seen that one!  If you wouldn't mind, I'd love a PM with details on how to get that to transpire!

Haven't a clue about this one.  Can you elaborate/explain?

Didn't notice that DN option (or forgot as it's been a long time since I've played the DN) but that's cool!

And yes, the party banter is GREAT!  My fav at the moment is Sten telling Morrigan he's ready to bed her, providing she has strong teeth and a hot poker.

The poem Hespith chants as the party approaches her is just eerie.  I think that is one of the best moments in the game.

Mage origin when you try to talk to Irving (the kind and loving mentor) about Jowan's fate. Can't say I care for the man very much after that. On the brightside it gave my future characters some motivation for befriending Jowan.

Other then that when Anora told Cauthrien I tried to kidnap her. I wanted her head hung from my shield. Still do and I doubt anything will ever change that.

In my first game I let Alistair duel Loghain. I had no clue Riordan showed up and you could choose to spare Loghain.

I'm talking about the Dark Ritual and Riordan's revelation that the Warden who kills the Archdemon will perish in the act.

Oh that actually reminds me. When it came time to execute Loghain and Alistair wanted him dead I tried to call his bluff. It's Alistair. I mean, is he really going to kill a man in cold blood?

Yes. Yes he is.

The Broodmother still disturbs me a great deal. I think it's what the poor woman has to go through to get corrupted like that.

The HN origin didn't get me that badly because I've done way worse to characters I've made for roleplaying games. I had GMs who went to have a stiff drink after reading a character history.

When Anora betrayed me to Cauthrien. Then when I didn't get the resume button after getting my butt beat down in that fight and having to break out of Fort Drakon.

I suspected that a Warden would have to sacrifice themselves to kill an Archdemon because let's face it, after the Joining things just seem to go downhill for Wardens.

But very pleased at the DR option given by Morrigan. I did do one US ending with a HNF who was in a romance with Alistair, the funeral scene was heartrending.

On that note, I was also surprised when Alistair took the final blow instead of my warden.

Hah, if I hadn't been spoiled about this, I would've been shocked as well.

Definitly when you learn of what happened to Branka's house, The game itself was dark and rather grim before that. That part in particular was just extra dark and gruesome.

Not to mention when you meet Hespith and have her tell you all about how the darkspawn would violate and spew in a womans mouth, then that she actually tears off her husbands face and feasts upon him while grinning

It doesn't get much darker and grim then that.

Having a couple dozen guards appear in a random encounter in Denerim accusing my Warden of theft, and no party with me at the time. Made it, but that Pause key sure got a workout....

I'm doing a no-persuasion-skill playthrough, even though my cunning is a little too high (I can pass very low persuasion checks) and after more playthroughs than I care to admit, I'm seeing a whole different game.

Cammen rejected my warden, Geyna refused to listen to my warden, Zevran had to talk Athras into talking to me (HUGE surprise).

Biggest surprise for me ever, of course, was the first time I got Zevran's confession of love and the proposal (was NOT expecting that at all -- I'm one of the few people who got that the first time unspoiled I think).

Fantastic game with so many layers.

One thing that I find fasincating is how people react based off all aspects of your character's origin. I found that with exceptions for certain areas that my HNF was the character treated with the most respect. I made similar choices on my other characters, but people still reacted like my CE was the scum of the earth which made things interesting.

Of course the absolute scum of the earth feeling came from playing a female elven mage. Hoo boy that was interesting.

Heh, I feel your pain. I was walking back to Arl Eamon's estate after the Fort Drakon escape (on my own) when I got the random encounter with the Revenant (sixth glass vial). That was a tough fight...
