So yeah I just now saw it the "What do we really know" thread. The Dalish have Welsh accent's now... What's everyone opinion on this?

I'm not quite so sure about how I feel about it yet. The Dalish always reminded me of Native Americans so I always felt the American, or rather the lack of an unique accent, suited them... I thought it was symbolic of their lost culture
Ehh...

My opinion is that "Welsh" is a funny word.

Welsh. Welshie. Welshikers.

The Welsh?

Um... are the rumors about them true? I'd worry about the hallas.

...I'll see myself out.

At least it's not Dutch! There's only two things in the world I can't stand. People who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch (hopefully someone will recognize that).

I was taken aback, having just made my first "real" (as in gonna play to the end) Dalish character. However, it would kinda work for him, oddly enough.

I do not know what Welsh sound like so i have no opinion, unless Lenimph is willing to give examples of what Lenimph thinks what a Welsh accent is

Like I said on some other thread, it's not a bad idea. Welsh history is closely associated with the celtic druids and mysticism, and also with skilled longbowmen. Seems fitting, although I don't know if the accent will strike that sort of chord with most people.

They're also associated with the brutal suppression of their native language by their conquerors, so I'd say it's very appropriate.

Also, Welsh accents are sexy. (HopHazzard approves +15)

The Dalish always remind me of the Celts, so Welsh accents don't phase me in the slightest.  I love the Welsh and the way they speak, it's very musical to the ear... exactly like I would expect a race that speaks elvish to sound when using Fereldan's common language.

Will never happen but I wish the Dalish spoke Gaelic.

Yeah that's what I figured when I first saw it but... It kinda feels like drastic change.  And what is it going to sound like when they say their Elvish phrases now?...

Welsh seems fitting, although I don't see why the elves can't have many varied accents. They are not more special than humans. A human from Fereldan sounds nothing like a human from Orlais. I assume, I may be wrong, that the free wild elves inhabit the fringes of civilization all over this franchises new world, not just the parts we have seen in Origins. There is no reason to think they all won't have different accents, or region specific idiosyncrasies, even if they share the same language.

Hell some may have never met others from extreme distances, they might barely understand some of their kin, let alone all sound alike.

The elves seem to often lament losing their past, there is a good chance many of them are fragmenting into different languages and histories as they know them.

Has it ever been specified if this retroactively applies to all Dalish, or if it just Dalish in the Free Marches?

It depends which Welsh accent some sound good but in other parts of Wales it sounds really common and sucky.

Well the Native Americans didn't have what we now think of as an American accent anyway.

Although I do somewhat agree with you...I always thought it was a bit weird that the Elves had such different accents from humans, although both the Dalish and the city elves are pretty tight-knit. If either of the two groups would have a closer accent to the humans' English accents, I'd have expected it to be the City Elves. Still, I don't really mind. As I am an American, it's probably not surprising that I find American accents less interesting than pretty much any other accent.

To all the people asking what a Welsh accent sounds like, there's this:

Maybe Irish. Elves, like the Irish have been conquered and oppressed by other peoples, and like the 19th century Irish also live in squalor and face racism, epidemics and starvation all the time.

Did they really turn the elves Welsh? My last name actually means "of Wales" or something like that. Hmm, I vaguely recall an episode of Kitchen Nightmares about a restaurant located somewhere in Wales - maybe I'll try to catch it again and listen to the accents of the locals if it airs again (assuming that I'm not wrong and that it really was in Wales - hah).

That's why the Dalish reminded me so much of Native Americans. They used to speak Elvish but then where introduced to Ferelden when they were enslaved so I figured that the "American" accent developed from the mix of Elvish with Ferelden.   You would think  that then the city elves would too also have their own accent that was closer to the humans but instead some how theirs is the same as the Dwarves...

I don't know anymore I'm just so confused. :pinched:

Actually considering that the Elves are a galic/scandanavian belief, then equating them to being Native American is a bit odd don't you think?
