In response to a couple comments here and on ffnet, I'll say that I'm taking my cues on Cailan here in particular from Maric's killing of Katriel.  While that was justified, the way in which he did it was IMO impetuous and cruel because he felt personally betrayed.  Alistair fans will probably throw tomatoes, but it's my take that the Theirin boys have a dark side and in the right circumstances it can come out.  The idea that Ellie, Loghain and Anora conspired behind his back is making Cailan a little crazy.  In the game we only see him at a moment when he thinks he's about to secure his place in Calenhad history, but in an AU context you have to ask "what if" about the same character in a different situation.

[/lengthy unnecessary justifications!]

The lastest chapter sealed my fate: I am now - officially - a Loghain fangirl. Curses, Addai, curses! Also, that brief encounter with Alistair tugged at my heartstrings. :crying:

When I first started writing DA fanfiction, SurelyForth said something about it being fun to bring people down with you as long as you were caught in the madness.  Oh yeah baby. Image IPB

Young Alistair makes me verklemmt, too.

I think you're right on the mark with possibilities for Cailan. And you're right about Alistair too - look how much he's willing to give up just so he can have his revenge against Loghain. It's couched in very noble terms and is tied up a lot in his honor, but at heart Alistair is an idealist who would rather abandon his ideal than see it tarnished by Loghain's entry into the Wardens. And it really is a bit of an emotional blackmail to make it a choice between him or Loghain. Like you say about Maric, in the end it really is childish and cruel because he feels personally insulted and very hurt by your decision to even consider letting Loghain in. It's not to say he doesn't have some justification, but in a lot of ways it comes from an immature place.

The difference maybe, between Maric and Alistair and Cailan is that perhaps the former two are more willing to own up to the responsibilities of their actions and regret them, growing in that way, while Cailan remains the eternal petulant child - he doesn't regret the brothel, he's just more discreet so as not to get lectured again. He doesn't even really take that much responsibility for Anora, more like "Daddy's had his say, now I don't want to hear anymore."

I always did think Alistair was far more like Maric than Cailan ever was.

Thanks Sandi. Also as I mentioned in the chapter, a husband slapping a wife around was not as shocking in a historical context as it would be to us. Loghain, however, has history on that subject so he is projecting a little.

Ok that's enough from me on it. *zips lips*

This Alistair fan, far from throwing tomatos agrees wholeheartedly with the Theirin darkside...

Thanks Maria! It's probably because we share similar views on this that I love your King Alistair sooo much.  Image IPB  One reason, anyway.

You know the idea just occurred to me while I was writing the message above. A comfortable Theirin is a bad one, Theirins thrive better in adversity, that's why Alistair will be better than Cailan and Maric and Moira better than Arland...

And I am sure your fic is great, I just don't want to start liking Loghain, it will throw my tidy universe into disarray, but be sure I'll read it one day...

That's a promise.

As something of a Cailan fan I probably should be throwing tomatoes, but this is too well written

@Maria, I curse the day I started this story sometimes. LOL But it's too fun to stop.

@Wulfram, thank you!! The dippy thing is that I'm a Cailan fan, too. Sometimes you hurt the things you love. Though honestly I'm not sure I'd have been able to write this prior to PAX and hearing what Cailan was about to do to Anora.

Are you referring to what was hinted at in Cailan's correspondence found in RTO (trying not to be spoliery here)?  Was that confirmed at PAX?

Yep.  It was originally intended to be a big part of the game.

Ah. I had heard that Ser Gaider had confirmed that, but I didn't know when/where he had done so. I'm not surprised -- I doubt Cailan would have received a letter from Celene like that if he hadn't already made up his mind and opened negotiations.

Ok was going to post this last week but got side tracked.

It's not really that far back in our history.   Just think "One of these days Anora....   One of these days...."

Heh. Well, Cailan was overdue for a beatdown, wasn't he?

BTW the next chapter is in the works. I was slowed down by some new migraine meds that knocked me for a loop this past week. Also by playing Mass Effect. I know... excuses, excuses.

As long as Loghain doesn't "I should go." after every conversation, it should all be good. I hope you adjust to your meds before you embrace eternity. Those Asari are like booze and don't mix well with meds :P

I usually hate fanfiction....because it's usually bad. I also usually don't get past the first few paragraphs...because it's usually bad.

Here it is 2 a.m. and I still have wrapping to do before family comes in tomorrow, but I haven't done it because I just read all 17 chapters in a go. Great story. Great pacing, the characters have depth, and dangit, I always kinda liked Loghain and it's nice to have a more sympathetic view on him. (Then again, I love Paradise Lost with its sympathetic Lucifer...take that as you will xD;;)

As you said you DO like constructive criticism...one thing bugs me a little. Gareth comes across as a bit bratty, and I can't imagine either Loghain OR Elissa putting up with it. I may have an admittedly skewed view on this based on my own upbringing, but. That's honestly my only criticism, it's very well-written.

EDIT: D'oh, 2 a.m. typos.

@Sarielle, thank you! Should I apologize for taking you away from the wrapping? LOL

As for Gareth, he's two. Enough said. :) His outburst at Loghain leaving was unusual for him (which is also why his parents realized something more was going on than toddler brattiness- he was protesting in the only way he could that his father is gone so much), but I also think he would show the effects of having parents who aren't necessarily the most "into" being parents. In Anora that probably came out in her being so independent and not needing a lot of fussing- she was 2 going on 30, I imagine- and in Gareth more in being wild. DA parents suck, let's face it. Loghain included.  Bryce and Eleanor the exception.
