Ever since Ive had the game Ive had this trouble, its frequency depends on the time of year room tempreture, the current star sign. Same old :P

I pretty much gave up playing with the release Awakening because it would crash every hour minimum. I have decided however that I've bought all this DLC as well as the Xpac and would like to play them.

My problem is Dragon Age continues to crash onto a black screen audio loop, crash to desktop, or blackscreen/freeze until I restart my comp.

Does anyone know why its doing this and any fixes I might try?

Do you have DEP turned on (i.e. properly on not 'just for Windows services')? I'm betting not and I bet that with it on you'd get an exception thrown long before the hard lock up. Fancy giving it a test?

If you feel you must purchase the latest official add-ons, and you are using Windows 7, you should create a new partition on your hard disk for Windows XP to play the game in.  If you do not need the latest add-ons, and do run Windows 7, you can uninstall and then not patch beyond the last patch that worked for you, wherther it was 1.02A or 1.03.

I had problems like this, eventually my graphics card died. RIP 3870. I think its a combination of DA running hardware a little too hot and your PC's ability to keep cool, One thing i did was to add fans to my 8gb of ram - surprisingly the ram made a lot of heat. Also check you have nothing obstructing fans or ad another fan to draw heat out from your tower.

The HD 3870 had its own problems with instability in this game that were typically addressed by very slightly DOWN-clocking the core speed in them.  There is no need for game designers to deal with the mechanical aspects of video graphics design.  If the manufacturers do not design in adequate cooling capacity, that is their defective design, not any game's "fault".

The fools in charge at Starcraft II should not have backed down on that situation.

I suppose I could give that a shot :P Let me guess. If it closes it to desktop and kicks up an error, post it here :P

No fans are obstructed, and my computer is not running above 65 degrees ©, with normal temps around 50-56.

There is a fix by Oberdan in this thread that seems to be helping people with crashing issues.
