So I'm sure many of you have played the city elf origin as both male and female.  So far I have only tried as female, so I am unsure if this is possible as a male PC.

At the end after you get to Vaguhan, he offers you a deal:  You can either fight him, but his father would be pissed, or he'll give you 40 soverigns (40 gold pieces!) for you to turn around and walk away.

Me, being the curious type, accepted his offer.  I was skeptical when he said he'd send one of his men over after I got out of the city, but then it goes to a cutscene of one of his men handing your character something.  Then you and Soris get into a talk about whether or not it was the right thing to do, and one of the options you can choose are "if you aren't certain, I can always keep your share."  Which implies that you did, indeed, get 40 soverigns, and split them 20/20 between yourself and Soris.

Then of course Soris gets taken to the dungeons, and you're told to say your farewells to everyone.  So I look in my inventory and there is no money at all.  Of course, I'm not surprised, seeing as giving someone 40 gold at the end of the origin story would be insanely overpowering, but I would at least like to know what happened.

Was it just "plot money" to fill in an "evil" option?  Or did your PC by for some reason give the money away to the elves of the alienage?

This option did make me feel bad, since Soris got dragged away to the dungeons, but I think I'll continue on with it, with the hope that when I return to Denerim, he'll still be alive.

Now, I realize this is the spoilers section, but I would like to ask people to reframe from posting spoilers past getting the help from the circle of magi, dalish elves, and just getting to the city of Denerim, but before getting Arl Eamon's help.  Or preferalbly, only talk about where this mysterious 40 soverigns went.

I know this seems quite silly, but it's the small things such as "plot money" or things like "oh you had to give all the money away" that are never explained that really bug me when it comes to RPGs Posted Image

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here since both choices have their consequences. Killing him will turn his father's wrath upon the Alienage while taking hush money just gives him the opportunity to do this again in the future.

For what it's worth, however, the game assumes that Vaguhan was murdered by the elves if you go to Denerim as someone other than a City Elf.

I played male city elf first time, and there really was no choice for him. Oh he offered but seeing my cousin laying on the ground having been raped by him and his buddies.... yeah I gutted all of them.

I know the OP asked for no later spoilers, so don't read the following if you don't want to:

I'm pretty sure my Dalish found Vaughan in one of Howe's prison cells while raiding the estate. I was given the option to let him out or leave him there. I left him there.

He and his cronies raped Shianni. They die. They die hard.

Agree'd, but I felt compelled to at least try a different option...

Perhaps I should just go through how I'd react my first time through, and save the experimenting for a later playthrough.

Thanks though!

I'm not really sure money carries over from the Origins at all. I sold a lot of gear in anticipation of being able to buy supplies at Ostagar, but I had no money.

Maybe I was just unlucky.

Really? When I was playing a human noble I found Vaguhan in the dungeon behind where you fight Arl Howe, you can decide to leave him there, kill him, or release his so that he supports you at the Landsmeet.

I wound up showing Vaughan and his cronies the business end of a two-handed sword. From what I've read, I'll probably be short a Landsmeet vote when the time comes but so be it.

It really doesn't matter. So long as you don't go out of your way to be obnoxious and idiotic, I think you win the Landsmeet by default.

At least, in every playthrough I've done I've won it, regardless of whether I gathered support for my cause beforehand or not.

City Elf was one of the best origin stories if you ask me. It had the most drama and tension going on. I loved it. My second character will definitely be a city elf. And Vaughan will pay for abducting and abusing the women, definitely.

I hate the city elf origin. Yes, it's very dramatic and tense and well-done, but it makes me really angry and puts me in a very dark mood.

When I went through as an elf mage, I killed the bastard. Unfortunately, I didn't know what he'd done, only that he'd been responsible for something terrible (riot-worthy) happening in the alienage, but for my character (who, in my mind, had been taken from the alienage as a young child), that was enough.

And that is what I personally consider a good story. Regardless of how it makes me feel. Ironically I love stories that make me depressed. Same with music for some reason... perhaps I am just odd like that. But it show's they're doing their magic.  :wizard:

I haven't gotten that far yet.  When I talked to the guard in front of the Alienage, he mentioned that the arl's son had been killed by the elves.

Same here.  Since my human noble had no reason to ask him about the alienage events, and hated Arl Howe greatly, she was inclined to believe he was ALSO an innocent victim of Howe's plans, and let him free.  I'm sure my character will act differently if I ever play a character from the alienage origin.

As a rule I try to find an alternative to killing a npc without sacrificing my pc's high morals but my city elf didn't hesitate, Vaughn deserved to die for what he did. He also deserves to die when all of my subsequent pcs run into him. Maybe I'm carrying a grudge but justice has a way of catching up with people like him. :)
