Why on earth does black turn out to be grey? And is there any way to fix that?

Use hair coloring products from reputable brands only.

Avoid exposure to UV light, which can fade both chemical dyes and natural pigmentation.

I've noticed this in a few screeenshots I've taken and I think it has something to do with the way light falls on it in various places (where colour, brilliance, etc. effects it). On the Character Design screen it's particularly bad, but then again I've been in locations where lighting seems neutral, and yet I have a Shep with what looks like blue streaks in their hair.

It's lighting conditions and the glossiness of the hair itself (might also be the shader effect used on it). I'm pretty sure the black hair is actually black in the save file, so editing it isn't going to help all that much.

Since you have the PC version, you can use the save editor to change the hair color to a black that doesn't look so much like gray.

Go here, and download the save editor if you don't have it. There should be a download link not too far from the top. It is also a tutorial on how to change hair color and other stuff.

There are two good colors for black:

RGB: 0,0,0 - If you use this one, it won't reflect any light.
RGB: 3,3,3 - This is the next best color.

Many thanks Xeyska. Once I knew it was possible I could find it quite well on my own though. The hair isn't perfect yet, but at least Purslane doesn't look like a grandma anymore.

0,0,0 is too unnatural, but it could be fun to play around with it sometime if I want to make such an unnatural character. Eventually, I used 4E-6 for each colour. Alpha channel on 1, of course.

EDIT:: I played around some more, and added a little bit of red to the mix, giving the hair a more brown shine, rather than a grey one, which greatly helps. Again, it's not perfect, just a bit better.

The values are now: 1E-08 for Blue and Green, 1.1E-08 for Red, and 1 for Alpha.
