According to my game manual the character's influence level with a npc is supposed to be found under the npc's portrait in the character menu - but is is not there. Where else will I get this information or is this a setting problem?

That shows up in MOTB.
In the main OC, you can find your influence using a debugmode command:
rs kr_influence

I tried the console command, got a pop-up box called Companion Influence Editor or something like that, but clicking on the options didn't seem to do anything. I use ScripterRon's NWN2 Character Editor available here:

You can't use it from within the game, of course, and need Java installed for it to work, but it will do lots of interesting things besides display (and allow you to modify) influence.

If you got the box to pop-up, it should work. You're more than half-way there.
One thing occurs to me - you have to hit ~ and close the debug console before interacting with the pop-up.
...
Recently someone here recommended one of these UI mods that shows Influence within the game; I don't remember which:

All too complicated for me I'm afraid, guess I will just have to root around in the dark.

I_Raps, I did that. The pop-up box will give me a menu to modify influences, but when I click on "Print companion influence" the box just disappears (yes, my printer was on). I thought that's what the OP wanted, a display of influence.
Pookieroo, don't give up. Someone here will figure it out. If you are new to the game I would caution against UI (user interface) mods; you never know what they are going to screw up. The Character Editor works on save files, so if you've backed them up (as you regularly should) you can't be hurt.

Sieben Elfriend,
In C:\\Program Files\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights 2 you should have a file named nwn.ini.
In that file (which you can edit with any text editor) you should have an entry like this:
[Game Options]
Memory Level=1
Memory Access=0
Debug Text=0
Object Selection Mode=3
DebugMode=1
That last line is the key. I think you have to put it there yourself, there's no way to do it in the game (of course, that was years ago so I'm not sure). If yours is already set up, then I'm afraid I'm at a loss.

Okay, I just loaded it up and gave it a whirl.
"Print Companion Influence" doesn't do anything.
But "Modify PC's influence over..." works. It shows you your current influence with that NPC; you can then change it or leave it alone. To see all of them, you click through each one separately.

Thanks for the help everyone, just recovering from a nasty and very expensive computer virus so am very nervous about editing anything in a game or getting involved with mods etc etc. I can do the basics (and I really mean basics!) but don't have a clue when it comes to mucking about in games files etc etc.

Then follow I_Raps' advice. The console is strictly in-game, no chance of anything nasty getting into your rig. I've checked it too, works as described. Thank you, I_Raps.
