I mean Vanilla BG, BG ToTSC, and vanilla BG2 have some pretty obscure experience caps of 89k, 161k, 2.95m.

Why not a cleaner number like 90-100k, 160 or 175k, or 3m? Or did they so badly want to dwarf mages and druid's capabilities in vanilla BG1 and 2?

Well the Druids weren't meant to level up past 14 according to Forgotten Realms lore (as discussed in another topic on here somewhere), but I think the developers were trying to ignore that fact for as long as possible until Throne of Bhall where they had no choice but to let go. But I think an Arch Druid makes more sense to be in ToB than SoA, even if there is probably only a handful of other Arch Druids in all of Faerun.

As for the obscure experience caps, the only logic I can think of is they probably played hypothetically through the game with a number of group formations and came to a mean of the amount of xp the group had accumulated. God forbid they didn't want the game to get too easy now. Also in terms of role playing I think the xp caps ensure the PC grows power at a steady pace .... haha, steady pace, ok maybe not.

Does anyone know exactly how long on average the PC's adventure lasts, from Candlekeep to the Throne of Bhaal?

what do you mean pace? like journal's day?

for bg1 i go around 150 to 350 days depending how many time i abuse sleep and which sidequest i do or not do.
As for bg2 i dont remember exactly but i remember that i stayed frigging long time in the underdark with most of my characters lol.
And i dont remember for tob either.

id say the whole adventure last around 2 to 4 years.

I'm only familiar with the 161.000 xp cap, as I play mostly BG 1 and always with TOTSC. When planning ahead (using these charts) a lot, I got the impression the makers of the game chose a specific point to make certain power levels possible and exclude others. For the TOTSC cap, rogues (Thieves and Bards) level 10 (160k.) are just about 'in', where a Cleric 6 dualed to Mage 9 is just about 'out' (162,500 xp). It makes me wonder if the 'obscure' number of 161.000 is very much on purpose just what it is. Less to do with playthroughs, more with calculating maximum class levels for the game, methinks.

What SoI wrote basically. From what I vaguely remember it had to do with game balance. They didn't want characters shooting too high in BG1. Then in BG2 the SoA cap is just before mages can cast ninth level spells and druids reach Grand Druid status. I doubt it was unintentional. In short, yes they did want to dwarf those classes that badly.
