Hi Everyone, I have just finished half of the Mass effect 2 (I think) but I found that some setthings between Mass effect 2 and Neon Genesis Evangelions are quite similar. I just wonder how much inspiration did the dev team get from that anime. The following is the list of similarities.

1. Look of Geth and the EVA Unit 0-2
Most of the Geth look like Unit 0 which has only single eye. When you compare the armor plates on the shoulders of EVA and Geth, they look very similar. When I first saw the red Geth, I was thinking that I saw EVA unit 2.

2. There are only three units on our side in each mission just like Unit 0-2 in EVA.
This point may be similar due to chance.

3. The way of the cycle and ascension described in Mass Effect 2 sounds very similar to  the Human Instrumentality project.
I don't want to spoil what cycle and ascension are (no spoiler in this part of the forum). Anyone interested in this can play the game and compare to Evagelion (enjoy the show).

4. Cerberus and Seele/NERV behave very similar to each other.
Both of them have lots of resources and advance technology. Their goal is unclear to the player/viewer  until the middle of the series (Based on this point, I have a bad feeling about Cerberus and would act according in the end of the game).

5. Cerberus and NERV are controlled by a mysterious and ruthless leader with a covered aim.

6. Biotic barrier and AT-field look similar.

7. Function of angle and collector in the anime/game world are quite similar.
To promote ascension/ Human Instrumentality Project.

8. Behavior and attitude of Miranda and Ritsuko are similar.
In the begining of the show, Ritsuko belifes herself to be the best and is cocky. Miranda was genetically modified to perfection. Anyone remeber what does sherpard (one of the options) told her when they first met?

These similarities are all I can recall right now. If you guys find any, please post.

To Dev team:

I hope that the ending of the mass effect series will not be like the following;
Shepard is captured by the reaper and is forced to fused with other human to generate a new reaper. During the process, he finds out that he retains his consciousness and has the ability to reverse the process. Then he/we can decide to reverse the process or continue the fusion (similar to the Human Instrumentality Project).

Here is my two cents.

Eva came to mind when they revealed the end boss, as did the explanation of what the Collector's were doing to their captives (turning them to goo for a "higher purpose") but that was really the only connection I made. Most of your other points seem like kind of a stretch/ are probably coincidence, though.

Barriers look like any kind of visual representation of a "force field". An organisation fronted by a mysterious leader is nothing new. And Miranda/Ritsuko's behavior is a common character archetype in genre fiction.

Not so much...

There is no direct cybernetic link between Shepard and any 'giant mecha' scale battlesuit, nor even with the Normandy. There is no indication of direct symbiotic contact between any human and any of the Reapers.

The Reapers communicate and indoctrinate, very unlike angels. Weapons in EVA include a wider degree of energy weapons, and AT fields seem fairly universally effective against either.

Mostly though the lack of giant mecha in ME/ME2 and the use of starships in ME/ME2 (angels seemed self propelled).

I wonder if everyone will be turned into orange juice in ME3.

3 units/members in one party is quite common in video games like Final Fantasy, Persona, Wild Arms and maybe a bunch more I've never played. Also, the team being formed by Shepard is more than 3 whereas in the original EVA series, only 3 (supposed to be 4) ended up being used heavily until everything went to Hell or Instrumentality.

The AT-field in EVA has a distinct pattern when it reacts to something while the shield in ME looks very generic when it reacts and reactivates after a recharge. The tech armor shares a similar color to the AT-field but looks nothing like it.

A few design choices on the Geth may bear similarity to an EVA unit but the overall look is very different to the very slim EVA units. But I definitely agree about the larger looking Geth Destroyer (was it called Destroyer?) having shoulder plates looking like the EVA units.

Reapers and Angels may want to eradicate all life but their methods in doing so are very different.
Angels want to trigger Third Impact (or was it 2nd? I can't remember) while Reapers eradicate by brute force(jumping through the Citadel Mass Relay) and abduction.

Anyway, I loved both EVA and the ME series so far, but the similarities are not so glaringly obvious and unique to just each other.

ruthless faceless men controlling secretive organisations with somewhat unclear goals are hardly unique to Neon Genesis or even Mass Effect.

I don't see much of a connection beyond maybe a few coincidences and tropes. Things like a questionable guy with an ulterior motive controlling some sort of secret group comes up a lot.

I was going to say horribly bad writing, but okay, this works.

Also, I don't think it's possible anyone is as loopy as Hideki Anno.

At least there wasn't a character in ME that was as annoying as Shinji.

Apologies for this Necropost, i couldnt find a rules thread that said whether or not this was allowed but...

I just stumbled upon this thread during a google seach, and i have to say that the OP turned out to be fairly prescient with regards to the ending of ME3 with his comment there from w whole year ago!
