How much have they spent/or have in budget in total? And where is most of the money spent at, animation, in game movies, voice work, bug removal? I mean there is a lot of talk on the forum of them having a limited budget, ex. for romance, combat system etc, but where is most of the money spent, and how does DA, a best selling series compare in its budget with other series, like GTA etc.

Typically when we say we have a limited budget what we mean is that we have X amount of money, and we need to spend it on different things. Typically there are concerns that we could "just do X" which are usually true in a universe with infinite time and money. However, we do not have infinate ANYTHING, so we, as developers, will pick our battles.

As to how much we're spending? Can't say and never will, but suffice it to say that DA2 is not a budget production.

I can't imagine DA2's budget coming close to GTA IV's 100 million dollar price tag.

I think you guys may want to rethink how you phrase things on the forums.

Why? That's exactly what happens. You make choices and you go with your gut.

If I have to self edit to the point where I'm too terrified to say anything, I might as well not post.

Not even imagination? *rainbow sparkles*

Also, you guys love making games, right? The power of love can overcome any barrier. <3

I'm imagining that scene from White Christmas:
"Wow."
"How much is wow?"
"It's between ouch and boing."
"Wow."

Marketing will never disclose anything about the actual budget they have. It is like showing us how much Wal-mart spends for labor...It just doesn't go well.

But I recently read an article on New York Times discussing video game market potential. They gave a very vague number: "in the millions" for large blockbuster projects.

So it's somewhere between $1000000 and $999999999.

I do find it curious that there is a "Can't say and never will" attitude to releasing budget information when the film industry releases their budgets all the time.

The film industry hardly EVER releases their actual budget. Most budget information comes from analysts who look at the production and, really, take their best guess.

David Gaider once said that there were something like 70 devs in baldurs gate team for one year. So, if there is around 100 devs and DA2 will take one year to develop, development cost is around 100*50.000$ - 5 mln dollars.

lol, try 50 million. Voice acting and music take a lot of that budget as well as marketing. GTA 4 had a 100 million budget.

In BG's times the standards were very low and voice acting wasn't required.

Marketing isn't quite game development, is it?:) As I heard, marketing costs for age of conan were greater than actual cost of developing the game.

So what? It is the highest budget ever, not an average.

a video game is probably way easier to produce than a movie... so if it had a 50 million dollar budget, it's bound to be epic. movies are just about the same cost.

as Vania stated, you would generally figure it out by calculating the salaries of the people who had to make it...and it's fairly safe to assume the average salary is in the 50k(USD) range.

Based on the way Bioware or other devs do business, there probably isn't a hard number, just a rough estimate. An individual developer is paid salary, but they might work on several titles. A single individual might make character models for 2 different games in a month, and also do some voice acting. They aren't getting paid to work on Dragon Age 2, they're getting paid to work for BioWare. Even if they took steps to isolate this (making people log their hours as working on a specific title), the would still only come up with a rough number.

If I had to guess, I would say in the 15-20 million range...but it's hard to tell without seeing the finished product. The size of the staff and how much they had to customize the engine are going to be large factors in there.

A little off topic, but I didn't realize APB cost so much money to develop (according to both lists). Considering it only ran for 3 months, that's getting into the realm of 'ET for Atari' screw ups...
