What do you mean?

Being gay is a modern concept, and it doesn't appear to exist in Ferelden.

Er? Modern concept? Histroy would beg to differ ;) Just look at Rome.

Btw, the fact that it exists in the game sorta makes it appear to exist in Feralden.

No, homosexuality does not exist in the setting. Homosexuality is an orientation, not an act. As far as we know, you can't RP a gay person, anymore than you can RP an atheist.

You can enter into a romance with someone of the same gender, and presumably eschew all others. That sounds about as homosexual as refusing to enter any church sounds atheist.

I can imagine that people in Ferelden would react towards homosexuality in the same way as people in the middle ages ... either one hides one's homesexuality or one risks his life.

That would be a nice mod ... if you play a homosexual, you must keep it hidden - otherwise, all of Ferelden will react in a negative way towards you. The Chantry might even send the Templars.

Except it does. Read the fanmade wiki. They provide source links on the page titled 'Sexuality and Marriage,' I believe.

When, in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,

I all alone beweep my outcast state,

And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,

And look upon myself and curse my fate,

Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,

Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,

Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,

With what I most enjoy contented least,

Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,

Haply I think on thee, and then my state,

Like to the lark at break of day arising

From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate

For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings,

That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Not at all. Fereldens see attraction to the same-sex as unusual, but not evil, amoral, or unnatural.

What about Rome?  There was a stigma on the receiver, but the other side was considered quite commensurate with regular wife-and-kids male sexuality.  Again, other cultures' versions of this stuff often don't map onto modern terms or distinctions.

Anyway, I think Maria is right that "gay" certainly does not exist in Ferelden (or anywhere else before the post-industrial western world), but from reading "The Calling" it seems that "homosexual" may (though not that word).  This strikes me as probably done for the sake of player experience.

I can never tell with her, it gives me a headache.

Then again, everybody who spells ''atheist'' as ''athiest'' gives me a headache.

That's interesting. Was the word used, or did someone identify as homosexual?

Also, was this Ferelden or Orlais?

Ah, wait, good point--it was Orlesians. A pair of male Grey Wardens, though obviously Wardens have reasons not to adopt traditional mating habits. I forgot that they're the decadent Froggies. ;)

However, there's an Orlesian companion, isn't there...

I'm not sure what's trying to be said here. The relationship was between two Orlesians, but it was recognized as "that kind of relationship" by a Fereldan. And for all we know they could have been bisexual, so I'm still confused about the issue here.

And, no, the word "homosexual" was not used to describe them as far as I remember. But I read that aprt 2 days ago, so I think I remember. :wizard:

So basically same sex coupling is regarded the same way as it was 2000 years ago. Some may find it strange that love for another doesn't require boundaries to be set up when choosing which one is to bed.

Prior to the modern world, people didn't identify as gay or homosexual. People might have had relations with members of the same-sex, even exclusively, but this wasn't an orientation. In many cultures, sexual identity was built around active/passive or masculine/feminine, which is why you don’t have as much talk about or restrictions on female same-sex activity as for many that literally was not sex.

I was saying that you couldn't RP as a homosexual anymore than you could RP as an atheist; it's just not a concept that exists in Ferelden.

I'll definitely roll a pretty boy elf for gay romance. He'll say things like "Alistair, you cheese like? Me cheese like eat lots. Let love make."

Gold star if you can understand this.

Oh wait i see what your saying, so the identifcation is a new thing.. but thats really just semantics. You could still RP that you have a lover as the same sex even if you don't call yourself homosexual.

Yes, as I said in my first post, I plan to have a same-sex lover. Image IPB

I understand that for many it's merely semantics, but I tend to be very serious about RPing. I want my character to view her sexuality and relationships in a way appropriate to the setting.
