Edit: updated OP

I made a thread about this in the main forum, but thought I would share it with the creative types too as, you know, it is creative.

Basically I have no real modelling or painting skills, the last time I picked up a brush was when the Fellowship of the Ring movie came out and this is the first time I've ever sculpted anything in my life. But I've decided to slowly make my own Mass Effect action figures in the 3.75 range, the same scale as Star Wars and GI Joe figures are. I started with Shepard and Garrus, and after painstakingly turning a GI Joe henchman into a Turian I made Miranda and Thane. After the new DLC I just had to make a Liara and I think she's the best one yet.  My eventual intention is to have all the ME2 and ME1 crew (minus Ashley, dead racists don't get figures), the Cereberus crew and a few key others like Anderson.

Here's the group so far

Knowing first hand how hard making custom figures can be you did a damn good job.

I've always been curious to know how someone actually goes about sculpting new pieces for custom figures. Though apparently not curious enough to use Google, but still, it looks quite interesting.

The little N7 and Cerberus logos on Shepard and Miranda are particularly impressive, at least to me. I'd love a close-up if you've got them. I'm guessing you stencilled them?

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. My friends IRL aren't nearly nerdy enough to appreciate this stuff so it's nice to show people them.

They were actually really easy to just paint. You do the shapes roughly first, not worrying about putting too much on, then neaten them up by painting the armour colour underneath over the parts that went wrong. My camera can't photograph well that close, but honestly as long as the colours and general shape are right they'll look fine. Advantage of the small scale I guess.

How to sculpt...

Just use green stuff, it's a cheap blue and yellow mix you can get from most toy shops and hobby shops. Just cut off the parts of the figure you don't want, stick a blob of green stuff the appropriate size to the figure and mould it with your fingers or a knife or whatever. Even quite detailed things like Garrus' visor or asari tentacles are easy enough.

I'll bump and update the OP as I make more. Next I guess I'll do Jacob, as I know what figure ll use as a base for him and it should be an easy job, but I also want to have a go at doing Tali.

New faces for the girls

Thane is an all new figure, the one didn't stand up and it annoyed me. Garrus is resculpted and Sheps has been changed to look like my personal captain.

And just for the heck of it, everyone's favourite varren Urz..

Thanks guys, I really want to finish this project and online feedback, good or bad, is really all I have to encourage me besides my own satisfaction.

The temptation to borrow a good camera and take huge pictures of the Normandy crew fighting the X Men, Darth Vader and a ton of dinosaurs is growing.

You know, those GIJoe figs have been warming the pegs at our local TRU for months, and every time I walked by I thought "that's some nice armor detail. I wonder...," and now lookie here. Nice job. Makes me want to dig out the x-acto and my old tub of spare body parts. I'll have to try the Green Stuff too. I bet my sculpy's gone dry. Pretty patient with the logos given the scale. I was always better with a blade than a brush, so I'd carve the edge of the detail bits to make it easier to define and paint them. It helped for straight lines, and a lot of production figures do the same to cover up their own sloppy work. Of course, I would also put a band-aid on my thumb in advance, since I always managed to make little cuts in the same spot. Not the lesson you'd think I'd learn, but there you go. Cut away, kids. Cut away.

/and on the off-chance you're not already aware of it, "Custom Con" is a great way to see what others are doing without having to hunt.

I'd marry you if I wasn't, ya know, straight and waiting for android technology to reach the point of replicating fictional people.

Good job! Jack looks awesome! I would have used a Marvel universe Black widow as a base for the women though, they are more articulated.

I'm glad you liked Jack, painting her tats was so much fun. Sadly all the Marvel Universe females have ****** the size of their heads, so they don't work beyond super heroines.

I'm working on Grunt right now. Grunt, Wrex and Legion are the only hard figures left and I feel the perfect Krogan needs to be done right,

Edit; Lukas, you should have a go. Sheps, Jacob and Miranda are all simple jobs I'd be happy to guide you on. A lick of paint and a pair of scissors and they're done.

You can keep the bust (upper body sans arms) of Darth Talon and put it in the place of the generic Marvel universe female figures bust, keeping the arm and lower body articulation intact,
I have found instructions about how this swap can happen on the internet. This way you can make a better articulated Jack with the same accuracy.
And the tats are just amazing, you are an artist!

Man that sounds intimidating. I'm happy with Jack though, big dramatic poses suit her anyway. Grunt is sculpted but I'm putting off painting him, it just looks like such a big job and getting the facial colours right will be essential. It'll be him, then Wrex and Legion. Then I can relax and have an easy job for Zaeed, Kasumi, Samara, Kelly and Joker.

Also might have to do a Harbinger. God I hope ME3 is mostly humans, so much easier to model...

 Your Jack is amazing!
I just recomemned a way to give her more articulation for more action poses because elbow joints would help with shotguns, that is all,
I wish I was as good you  with my customs, I can't paint that level of detail yet.
Looking forward to that Harbinger figure, it should be a beast!
Ever thought of an Aria figure?

You really, really can. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm a poor painter (although better since I started this). The only small details are the faces and the logos, both of which are easily done. In fact I'm gonna make a little guide for them in a second, it would be really cool to see someone else make some figures too (if enough people try Bioware might see that there's a market for a limited-run official figure line, and that would just be awesome).

I guess Harbinger would just be a big figure moulded to look like a bug, scarred up heavily and painted bright yellow with black drybrushed over. It does sound fun.

Aria would be awesome actually. She's kind of like Boba Fett in that she's a massive badass that we don't really know much about. In a way I can't wait til I'm done with the main crew so I can just be playing through and think 'man, that random side-character is cool, I'm gonna make the only action figure in the world of them!'  Jentha, the Blue Suns captain in Garrus' recruitment mission, is another character like that. I always try and biotic throw her out the window rather than kill her, I like the idea that she survives.
