I was trying to find her, but I guess you only get one chance right after the early cutscenes? how the heck is a new player supposed to know this? Is it the same for the other guy?
2 companions, 1 chance only, first 5 levels of the game?
Seems like an extreme punishment for not visiting a tavern first time in the zone?
Am I missing something?

Its not a punishment, just a good reason to play through the game one more time.

Thanks for the cookie cutter answers... so insightful! Some of you really are quite droll.
There is no "choice" There are a set number of companions you can get, and she is the only bard. Not everyone is going to restart the game after putting dozens of hours into it.
Chance encounters are one thing, but it's totally artificial since there is no chance to meet anyone else to replace that slot. You either get that character or you dont, total BS.

If you lost your chance... there's always Antonio Banderas.

I do think that perhaps in Lelianna's case you are more likely to meet her as you are traveling, being a Maker-inspired bard, she would do a bit of wandering if she survived the sacking of Lothering. But the belief is that no one survived and it is gone...so she probably got killed if you didn't run into her.
It is a tavern...I know some are new to RPG's...but that is where all adventures traditionally start. Those rumors won't get themselves drunk after all.

Only problem is I need somebody to unlock all those otherwise unobtainable chests, and I haven't met Zevran yet. Not to mention wanting Shale in my party. Decisions, decisions.

Just remember the game is alll about choices.

I certainly understand your frustration in losing out on getting a companion, but I believe that having the chance to miss out on getting her makes more sense. It gives the player something to find as opposed to having something forced on him. It also makes sense that she wouldn't be standing around in the tavern waiting for you indefinitely.
It doesn't bother me that the option to miss her is there. To me, it makes the game better.

Sorry that you missed out on her, I have liked her conversations with Morrigan.

But...that is the same for everything in a game. The sword Topsider's Honor is something that you had to look around the Deep Roads to get. As for characters...well your actions can send them away, so why should they offer you a replacement because you didn't meet them?

LOL I love how whenever someone posts something about DAO they may not like, people call them n00bs. I've played BG2, KOTOR, JE I know this is a signature Bioware move...
However, at that stage in the game I already had many active quests, I didn't happen to go into the tavern my first time in the town. So now, no bard... ever...
That's my gripe, missing certain events I guess is the way it goes for a scripted story based RPG, but IMO it's a shame and unbalanced to have such a character only available 1 time, so early in the game.
For instance in BG2 oftentimes the companions willl give you a time limit on a quest, or you have a certain sequence etc..
But I'm stuck w/ a dog I never use, a DLC golem that I don't enjoy... I really wanted a bard... and the only option is "restart n00b"? ROFL
I realize this is "whining" but from a risk/reward... you never even know what you are missing, until you start collecting bard gear and bows/arrows you plan on using for your bard... which you never get.
IMO seems VERY harsh. And speaks to the game having a conflict of "go anywhere you want, but not really, and only at certain times"
The end result is a GIMPED party. Not in terms of raw power, but in diversity, fun, and missing storylines, quests, abilities etc...
How is one supposed to know which towns to go to when, or that if you go follow a quest, but didn't check for encounters you didn't know where there, you miss them forever...
People are like "well she was in the bar, now she's dead" That I could live with, if there was a chance to meet another companion... but again the main point is there are fixed number of companions, if you miss them, you get nothing
I'd even take a non storyline bard as an option. LIke you miss the cutscenes and such, your bad, but at least allow the ability to have a diverse party
Not everyone wants Wynne, Arcane Mage, Alistair/Golem, {pick any} for every party set up. I was going to go Templa PC, Zev, Bard, Wynne/Morrigan.
/sigh guess I'll wait til the restart.
Again my main complaint is risk/reward. The risk of missing 2 companions is HUGE, and you only get 1 chance, the problem being you don't even know when that chance is, or that you missed it... and in terms of outside the game world, you missed out on game content on the disc...
So I am punished as a player for following a quest?

How could you miss the tavern she is in? You have to run past it at least a dozen times if you complete a few of the quests there.
Oh wait, it must be Bioware's fault you suck at the game - silly me

You have to meet Leliana to unlock bard specialisation though.
Only for free. You can get a book for it in Orzammar.

Apparently quicksaves (F5) don't overwrite each other, which is unusual but adds to their usefulness. I got in the habit of doing this after almost every conversation because I had a couple situations where I accidently greatly pissed off Morrigan or Alistair or indeed missed a character.
