So I don't know about you all... but for me, the only way to confirm someone is dead is to actually see their corpse. No corpse? Then it is unwise to simply assume they are dead.

On this note, consider the events at Ostagar, both at the original battle and the semi-triumphant return.

King Cailan clearly died during this battle. His rib cage was crushed, his life blood literally squeezed out of him. His corpse is then again seen on the return, desecrated and claimed as a trophy by the Darkspawn. The whole event in the Return to Ostagar centers heavily around Cailan's corpse. How he died, what happened afterwards, how the Warden's reclaimed the body, giving it a proper funeral and all that. It makes a very very big deal about his body.

This is strange however since for most Wardens, regardless of origin and especially if you have Alistair in your party at the time, the main focus would not necessarily be on the King... but on finding and honoring the corpse of your lost mentor and the man who saved your life... Duncan.

Duncan's body is not involved in the Return to Ostagar in any sense. It is simply gone, missing, vanished entirely. Only his swords remain. And there is no explanation or even mention given to the fact that his remains are missing. Nobody seems to notice.

Furthermore, in the events during the battle of Ostagar, the player does not actually see Duncan's death. It is only implied that it took place and never visually confirmed.

So... as I am a happy little conspiracy theorist, what do you lot think this means? Hmm?

Is this some sneaky plot of the writers to spirit Duncan away for a return somewhere down the line in some form or another? Or is he just dead? Or are they perhaps just keeping their options open? Not necessarily wanting to destroy a potentially useful and incredibly epic character?

Granted, I do not expect a return in DA2... or ever to be perfectly honest. I just can't shake the feeling that there is something more going on there than meets the eye.

I never saw Abe Lincoln's body.

QED: He's not dead yet.

He's the first ingrediant in the Darkspawn's favourite sandwich, a DLT.

A return of Duncan would be so damn cheap.

What stops Mr.Gaider from lying to us. He might want to surprise us in a other DA.

A complete loss of credibility.  And the fact that everthing he said ever again would come with the addendum "...though he has lied to us before."

I'm still interested in the BioWare quote about Jack not being the biotic prisoner.  I'm curious how far back it was.  Could always have been a change or contraction of the number of characters available in ME2.

Now would I buy a "we had to do it for the sake of the story..."  yes, but I would need convincing.

*stirs the coals again*

DG states that Duncan is dead, but does not say when he died. We assume we already know, but being ex-military, that is generally not a good forumla to follow....

Personally, he needs to remain in the Fade side of Ferelden. His character for me is defined by how well he lived, as well as well he died. Plus, I have his swords & shield, and would hate the rental fees.....

Or he gave the shield to Alistair and then took it back!

It is totally possible for Duncan to be in the Fade.  I think souls used to go the the Golden City Of Woo Woo, but when that turned black... where did the souls go?  Wandering the Fade?

Oh man.

Poor freaking Duncan is being dragged around by his non-existant corpse again.

He's dead. He was, at the very least, knocked senseless by a darkspawn on a battlefield that was later used as a darkspawn buffet. He was an appetizer.

Actually, the term dagger includes short swords, as well as the appearance of many such blades in the game. And I often keep both as mementoes. And yes; if Alistair is using Cailans sword, I keep him with the matching shield, and keep Duncan's for myself (esp since it is so difficult to gain the Warden Commanders version).

I like the idea that Duncan is haunting those that are resposible for his death, as well as the loss of his men. The Fade reminds me a bit of the Trek time area where you could locate multiple Capt Kirk's.

You know, the only reason I want Duncan to be alive is that in the Trailers for Dragon Age Origins, he seemed to play such a big role. It seemed as if there was something more going on than, "In the first two hours of play, all of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden die."

I was actually disappointed by what the trailers and released videos portrayed Dragon Age Origins as being, and what it turned out to be. That's not saying I didn't love every bit of the game, I just felt hoodwinked. As if they showed me a hat, told me all about it, made it look super amazing, and then pulled this amazingly magnificent rabbit out of it and told me this would now be the focusing point.

In any case, like I said, Duncan has to be alive, or Bioware is REQUIRED to make prelude games to DA:O for the purpose of telling us Duncan's story.

Based on the trailers, what did you want Dragon Age Origins to be? A game of pre-rendered fight sequences lacking choice and depth? We already have a video game series dedicated to that. It's called Final Fantasy.

As for telling Duncan's story.. BioWare is REQUIRED to do nothing. However, I believe Duncan does make an appearance in David Gaider's Dragon Age books - but I don't own them (yet), so I can't actually give you a definite answer on that.

To the OP: Duncan is dead. Dave. Dave, Duncan is dead. Duncan, dead is, Dave. Dave, dead is Duncan.
He's a goner, an ex-Duncan, pushing up daisies...

It's been stated by devs that he's dead, and no matter how many dozens of threads like this are started, Duncan is not coming back. Please, let him rest in peace.

I would like to see a ghostly Duncan join the Warden on trips into the Fade. Then such appearances could still be full of conjecture, hope, and humor.
