I have been fighting with the wakmesh, battling and struggling to bend it to my will and today I may have discovered a more reliable technique of fitting a bridge into the walkmesh with no problems. 

Normally, I put the bridge across the stream and then modify the height of the placeable.  This technique usually leads to sorrow and despair and hours of struggle.  This time, instead of setting the height of the placeable, I place the bridge across the stream and let it stay at the height it automatically chooses.  Then, to get it to the right height, I raised the terrain under the bridge until it brought the bridge to the right height.  I had to do a little smoothing to keep the terrain from poking up through the bridge.  I baked the area, and bam.  Perfect walkmesh on the first time! 

Give it a shot and see if this technique is effective.
