what are the gems for? a quest or something, and if so whats the quest?

Most are for selling, some can be used to support some troops. Sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and I think Malachites can be used to support troops later on.

Yeah, after the dwarf main quest you can turn them in at camp for experience and stuff. Support the troops! =P
