Why doesn't your main character have recorded voice dialog?

Having played both Mass Effect games, it just seems a bit weird when you go back and play a game where the main character does not speak.

I mean all your other team members have recorded dialog, so why not the main character?

Because the guy they got to do the voices was mute and could only do sign language, and because of disability laws they couldn't fire him and get someone else.

I think it's odd too, everyone having a voice except the PC, and yet they respond to what seems like a telepathic message. At least they plan on fully voiced PC in DA2.

Easy asnwer: it was too expensive. You would need at least 6 actors: human male and female, elf male and female, and dwarf male and female.

That would mean you also needed actors who could do a dwarf nobility and commoner and not sound the same.

With so many different origins and so much text in game, it seemed prohibitive to Bioware I am sure. And apart from ME, all of their other games had mute main characters.

However, because voices for the main PC are so important in today's business world, DA2 has voices. And also only male or female human as origin option. Next time you think it would have been cool to play as an elf or dwarf in DA2, think about the voice acting cost...

You could always read out the lines yourself and pretend you are a valiant hero. The best voice actor is yourself! ... or maybe not.

I can't even tell you how many times I've said something to Morrigan thinking it was said sarcastically only to have her flip a **** over it.

Not necessarily 6 actors, just a male and female voice would've done.

And they would'nt need to specifically hire a person to do it, they could just use an actor who is already recording dialog for NPCs for example.

I thought that way too, and was caught off-guard when Shepard spoke for the first time in ME.  But it didn't take me long to connect her voice with my character and now I miss not having my Warden able to talk.  I, for one, am very glad Hawke will be voiced in DA2.

For me at this point, it only matters if they use something like the Violent VO which becomes distracting. If that occurs, I may jump off the ladder.....

I like having a mute PC over someone who speaks for the reason Wilfram gave.

And there seems to be less options as well which sucks.

There are a lot of dialog lines for the PC.
Multiply these lines by Male/Female PC and Human, Dwarf and Elf.

That makes for a LOT of dialog lines that would need recording. As such, the team choise to leave the PC unvoiced.

For Dragon Age 2, you will be able to have a fully voiced PC. :)

Well, would this be any different if your character spoke?
You could still misread the text just as easily.

on the OP, Just imagine your saying it.

Sheppard never seemed much like a personal character, what if I wanted my character to be to sound all shy? or evil? or have a throat cancer croaky voice like Godfather from Generation Kill?
Besides Orlesians have French accents so Awakening characters would be screwed.

I still think it's better to imagine saying it (far better) and have all those customizing options. (elves, dwarfs etc).

I'll play DA2 and see what is like to play an RPG with a voiced character for the first time. I just hope, really hope, that this will not spell the end of the RPG legacy line i.e. to have the option to choose between races.

Only reason I wished my character had a recorded voice is so that maybe he would contribute to the random party banter. That would have been awesome! But for the full dialogue, I think it would have been a bit of a stretch to have so many VA's do that much as it would have been quite a bit more expensive. Party banter dialogue would have been great, though.

Agree with Arch.
I also hope if "the grey warden" returns he/she will still be "unvoiced", I hope he/she does return either in DA3, some DA2 DLC or elsewhere in the series.

Actually this is close to the way I actually feel. I don't need to hear some guy blabbing what I am thinking. I am a bit disappointed in the voice for DA2 and see this as a further move away from what separated RPG's from the shoot(er)s with a bit of customization.

Not feeling all that great about where RPG's are headed with the direction bioware and every other developer has taken toward the larger and more simplistic console market.

You can hear sarcasm on the voice. On the Internet as text is different.

From the number of threads and posts in the Mass Effect section of the forum regarding Shephards memorable lines and quotes, you can tell that main character voicing was important.

And I don't necessarily agree that you'd need separate voice actors for human/dwarf/elf main character - this would only be noticeable if you decide to do a new playthrough with a different race and by then you'd be so use to that particular one voice that it might not even matter.
