looks like I have to try to roll back my drivers, as I have 9.0c and .net all up to date.

and I am not a huge fan of rolling back drivers as of right now all games work for me. just this tool set doesnt want to work.

That's not a graphics driver issue. You definitely are having a .net issue. Well, 98% definitely anyway. I've reviewed a large number of Errors and the primary issue when opening the toolset is either DX 9.0c or .net has some issues.

Sometimes an attempt to install .net post installation of NWN2 (you'll find it on the disc under the folder titled Prereqs. This should be in the Toolset FAQ, but I am not at the moment sure if that's so.

Keep at it and keep posting. We'll do our best to see you through this difficult time. :)

You honestly don't believe that Microsoft is really going to get back to you with an actual solution, do you?

I'm betting if you take it slow, pretend that you haven't done all those other steps and verify them, one by one, you'll find an answer. Most common issues of toolset crash at startup:

Direct X 9.0c not installed.

.Net Framework having issues (usually helps to attempt an install from the NWN2 disc in Prereqs folder, not always).

Wrong bitsize version of .net (ie: you're using Win7/Vista/XP 64 and trying to use a 32 bit .net install or vice versa)

You are running your NWN2 from a drive other than the OS main boot drive.

You are using an external harddrive (this has also been known to cause issues, though I thought that once patched to the removal of SecuROM [level 1.21 and up] that shouldn't be an issue.)

You have an installation issue between drivers and hardware that the game doesn't like. (This is usually video drivers, but a few sound drivers and firmware revisions on some CD/DVD drives have cropped up from time to time as well.)

But seriously, don't wait for Microsoft to come tell you what's wrong, okay? You'll be a mouldering corpse before that day arrives, I promise.

I have the same issue (Win 7 64 vs NWN2). My DirectX is the up-to-date and NET framework 4 is as well the newest version available. Have been trying to work this thing out for a long time but there doesn't seem to be any solution.

Dunniteowl's advice to use the NET installer on the NWN disk certainly helps many people with this problem, but it doesn't work on Windows 7. Whenever I try to install it, it sais that it is already included in my system. Even if I manually remove both NET frameworks that I can see from my system (1.1, 4), it still does not allow me to install 2.0.

And by the way, don't even bother to contact Atari (publisher). They will only tell you that you can read on the box that NWN2 is for Windows XP and that Vista and Windows 7 are not written there (and that way politely tell you that they don't care for your problem since they already got their money from you)

Our only hope lies on Bioware and Obsidian to make a patch that will update NWN2 to use NET framework 4 instead od obsolete 2. But I wouldn't get my hopes up since they have their hands full with new games right now.

Only thing that I have not tried yet is to install NET framework 3.5. I will try that right now.

Make sure you get the right version of 9c if you have a 64-bit OS.

The problem i had with the toolset crashing (on startup) on win7 64 bit was due to not having direct 9c installed. I have directx 11. However you must also have directx 9c installed because 9c contains some files that are necessary for the toolset to function that directx 11 does not include.

I used directx 9c from microsoft's download website. Its directx 9c redistributable. After that it works fine.... well as good as everyone elses i guess.

Note: It will not overwrite a higher directx. It will only add the missing 9c files, so you will still have your current version of directx if that version is higher.

I don't know what the complaining is about... DNO's advice contains the fixes for 99.9% of all these issues, based on 4+ years of experience.

I'm running windows 7 64 bit on an I7 quad core with 6 gigs DDR5 ram and an nvidia GTX480 1.5 gigs ram, what's funny is with the diectx 9.0c files in place I can run the TS fantastically, (better than it's ever run) but I'm getting weird graphics during game play, please see the attached picture.

This graphics issue only happens in outdoor areas, but not all outdoor areas, first two areas of the OC were perfect with graphics that made me drool. Fort Locke is where the screenie was taken.

I had the exact same graphics issue in the toolset, but got rid of it by de-selecting the show sky option.

Any ideas, I sure miss NWN2.

sirchet, that's a driver issue, known with nvidia cards.

Solution is to either update or rollback your drivers.  I'm sure if you look around on the forum you'll find other posts indicating which driver version(s) is/are good and which are problematic.

Good luck!

Just thought I would post an update.

Anyone else having graphic issues with their nvidia 480GTX, (refer to the picture I posted earlier).

What I did was manually search for a newer version of the graphics driver, (as recommended by a few fine folks).

I was under the impression that when I went to device manager and right clicked, told it to search for updates that it would locate any new ones, I WAS WRONG, it said my driver was up to date.

When I manually searched via "google" I found that nvidia released a new driver for "game compatibility" it's version 260.99 released 10 of 2010.

Here's a link to get the 64 bit version for windows 7 or vista 64 CLICK HERE FOR THE DRIVER

And don't forget boys and girls, sometimes a step backwards (rolling back to an older driver) is as good, if not better sometimes, than a step forward.

I just installed on Windows 7 64bit and initially the toolset wouldn't open at all, just crashed as soon as I clicked the icon, but an install of directX 9c resolved the problem and preliminary use suggests it is working.

Oh wow: installed DX9.0c twice, to no avail. Used the link from the last post and installed a 3rd time, and it worked beautifully. Thanks!
