Hi, i just installed Mass effect 2 (without using disk 2) and as soon as i click Play (or configure) on the startup screen, the game just crashes and all it says it there was a problem that caused it to stop working.

I tried searching for other topics but couldn't find anything that related to this in my searches, it's probably because i literally only just made an account so im not used to the search engine yet.

So if anyone knows how i could fix this problem or knows another thread in which this has already been tackled i would be very very grateful to hear about it.

Cheers

Ps: i'm currently running 64x bit windows 7, have DirectX 11 installed, and my specs easily cover those required.

My own feeling for that situation among the members here, is that the majority of the time that what you desribe is happening, it's related to low quality hardware, well below the minimum (typically some crap video chip from Intel).  If you have something other than one of those, we will still need the standard summary of the system hardware and operating system environment, as described in the pinned thread.  If you have just that Intel video, don't bother with the full report.

Operating System: Windows 7

Processor: Intel core 2 quad cpu 2.50GHz

Memory: 6144MB RAM (around 5GB i believe)

Video Card: NIVIDIA GeForce GT 230

Hard Drive Space: about 800GB

I'm thinking my Graphics card may be the problem, but seeing as i know next to nothing about graphics cards, a second opinion would be gladly appreciated ^_^

Gonna need help with this, too. I installed Mass Effect 1 and as soon as I get to the configure screen, I get an error that says a problem has occured and the program will now shut down.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

My specs:

Intel Core i7 Quad Core CPU 2.93 GHZ
4 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce Gainward 465 GTX

I CAN run the program using just the program and not the launcher but I can only configure up to 1280x900 resolution. Really annoying. Going to try and reinstall but I didn't see anything wrong with the installation the *first* time around, so I'm not sure what'll change this time.

If anyone knows what the problem is, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Processor: Intel core i7 960 3.2GHz

Memory: 12gb(rounded off)

GPU: Nvidia GTX 480 SLI(not sure if the SLI i might cause it to have problems down the line so please do tell)

as soon as i lunch the game it comes up with the config then stops working. It was working on my old pc but now it wont even get to run the game as i keep getting the OP's problem

Looks like some sort of problem with windows 7, meaning Bioware lied that Mass Effect works properly with windows 7 >_>

Looks like the problem is with the actual launcher then... well at least it can be run just on a rather small resolution =/

but that in no way means we don't need a fix. We wanna know whats going on!!!

Stupid question here, but how do you launch the game without using the launcher? I'm getting the same problems as above, with similar hardware.

The scrollbox on that dropdown list is infamous for blending into the background. More often than not, people with this problem were tricked into thinking they couldn't scroll down the list - ME is actually pretty good about detecting possible resolutions.

You need to go to the directory ME1 was installed from and run the large executable (I think it's over 10 MBs) directly, rather than the smaller one that is the launcher. You can, of course, create yourself a shortcut (right-click, Create Shortcut, then Cut & Paste the shortcut to wherever you want) once you get there.

If you go into your mass effect 1 files and go in a folder called Binaries you'll find a mass effect file above a file called masseffectconfig. Click the first file and this launches the game directly without using the config to launch from.

Had the same problem, downloaded the patch and all is fixed, I'd try that.

Just tried it and it worked. Should've thought about doing that before. Thanks!

... when I try to open the patch from the launcher, it says the page doesn't exist.. same with just about any other link on the launcher.

When I try to run, it opens the configuration utility, then I get a message it can't collect the needed data and shuts down.. so much for my ME 1 experience.

On top of that, I also bought several DLCs for ME2, and the shadowbroker is allready turning up as a BROKEN file.. downloaded twice, twice broken..

moral of the story; that's the LAST time I get tricked into paying for stuff online.. and seriously rethinking the wisdom of carrying my money to the SAME firm once the Old Republic hits the shelves, which I was planning to do for over a year now..

Plain Ranting / Raving is off topic here. It goes in the Off Topic Forum. This is where you look to other gamers for suggestions about tech problems.

I could not get ME to work on my Vista x64 system with a 9800gtx w/ driver 258.96, 9450 cpu, 4 gb ram and an asus xonar dx sound card. I upgraded to Windows 7, reinstalled the game and patch but it still will just show the splash graphic then hang on launch. The config program runs but not the game. I've tried every compatability mode as admin and normal and the same thing happens every time so there must be something else that is interfering.

I can play it on a W7 Vaio laptop with 4gb ram and an Nvidia 330 gfx card. On that system the game runs but not the config (can't win with this game, lol). I edited the cfg file to set it to 1920x1200 but it looks like it's actually running 1680x1050 and filling in the borders with black. That's ok with me since I can actually play it but it's crazy annoying that I can't play it on my desktop - at least not yet.

Have you tried running the auto run as admin because vista and window 7 dont need compatibility mode to run it but doing the auto run in admin fixes it in some cases ive heard of

yep, tried that. I really think it's something else in the system (maybe sound device?), I used to get a missing sound.dll (or something like that) error when trying to run it in certain modes while still on Vista x64.

Thx for the tip though. :)
