Civ V Epic Fail?

and is increasing.
You see, Civ 5 requires a Steam account for activation and
Steam software permanently installed on your computer while you choose to
continue playing the game. WTF!
Would you buy BW games if you were required
to install an unwanted third-party marketing platform? Are 2K and Steam
desperately clinging to each other in hopes that their ship won't sink? Is this
a brilliant corporate move that correctly assumes that fan attrition will be
negligable?
I. for one, don't expect to see Civ 6.

Anyways, I don't really mind but that's mostly because I use STEAM anyways. Games that forces me to install crap in order to play is not generally well liked by me.
I'd still rather get Civ V though since it's better than BW's games. *ahaaa!*

Fallout: New Vegas will require Steam. It's getting to the stage where it's more uncommon to find a PC gamer without Steam on their PC.

WTH is steam?OnlyShallow89 wrote...
And? It's just one form of content management. Firaxis only have to make patches for Steam. They only have to make DLC for Steam. Their technical support only has to deal with Steam, and I wouldn't be surprised if Valve give a bit of a hand with that as it's their platform.

Which is one reason I buy fewer and fewer games. I don't support that kind of 'management'. I was excited about Fallout:New Vegas until I found out it required Steam. So I'll be passing on it. Same with Civ 5, same with Empire:Total War. Same with a few other titles. I know many people don't have an issue with it, and that's cool. I don't like the idea of being forced to have a separate client intstalled that has nothing to do with the game, so I won't support it. My 2 cents.

Nothing to do with the game? It's everything to do with the game. It's how Firaxis will distribute DLC and patches, along with taking advantage of its community and (I believe) multiplayer features.Eurypterid wrote...

I don't like PC games that much, I actually prefer the consoles. Mouse and Keyboard are not for me.

Steam is hardly a Cerberus Network. Some ME gamers chose not to install the CN but are still able to play the game.OnlyShallow89 wrote...

I would have bought it this morning via D2D but the game REQUIRES installation of Steam software and activation of a Steam account regardless of whether you use disks or install a digital download. Steam software MUST reside on your computer while you play the game. It's an integral part of Civ V and can't be avoided.
this saddens me.
i suppose i'll go and buy civilization iv with all the expansion packs included.

Except for the Steamworks features which are part of the game including multiplayer matchmaking.Eurypterid wrote...
It has nothing to do with the game itself. It's simply another form of 'on-line activation and authentication required'.
Different kettle of fish. Cerberus Network is a group of DLC items used as a deterrent to used games sales.Mooner911 wrote...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you. For games like FO:NV I do think it should be optional (As it is for Unreal Tournament 3 and Dawn of War 2, I think). Dark Messiah: Might & Magic only required Steam for multiplayer, and I'm sure you could install just the single player without Steam.Eurypterid wrote...
I was overlooking multiplayer, as I don't do that. So I'll concede it for multiplayer games (although one could argue that you should only have to install Steam if you're planning on using that multiplayer feature. But I understand it would be simpler for the distributor/developer to also deliver patches through Steam). But for single player games like Fallout:New Vegas? No dice.

I don't care if it's easier for the company to do it. Where's my serious price break, then for lack of physcial media? Where's my inherent trust and 'customer is always right' centric business model?
Right there next to the buggy whip, apparently.
I will not be molded and forced and I'll not buy as opposed to simply swallowing the bitter pill and thinking, 'well, it's really not that bad.' I wonder how tyranny starts? Is it a full on take over (sometimes) or is it more likely that it starts off with someone saying, "Don't worry, this isn't that big a deal." And each time a little more control and personal empowerment is removed, the folks who make the rules keep telling you to say, "Don't worry, it's not a big deal. In fact, this is better because it keeps us in business."
Well, if it comes down to it, I can find other things to do to fill up my entertainment slot. And I am a BIG FAN of the Civ franchise.
