Yep had sound on mine, however when I played it in the morning they had some headphone issues and I had to help them get the sound balance right (I made sure it was quite loud for the purpose of trying to tell who was voice acting Hawke heh). I saw a couple of Lady Hawkes, but as I said earlier most people I saw used the Warrior class and Garrett Hawke.

@Apollo Starflare I watched each of the four demo machines to see if the
mage was selectable, but I'm pretty sure all four machines had that
choice locked.
Maybe the mistake was with the machines which had it unlocked then? I am certain it was unlocked because I looked at the other machines character select screens just before I went on, and mine was definitely different (greyed out).

Mages seamlessly switch between melee and ranged based on the
distance between themselves and their target. If you are attacking
someone who moves into melee range, you'll start thumping them with your
bad ass staff moves. If they stay at range, you'll throw bolts like you
did in Origins, just with more style.
Most definitely, both Mage default attacks (melee and ranged) look awesome. Just to clarify as some seemed unsure, the melee animation chain does indeed involve bashing enemies with your staff (usually with a fire effect, I'm guessing this might change depending on the staff) and ending with the flame blast attack Hawke uses in the trailer. To me it was very similar to how Hawke fights in the trailer in general, I really won't be surprised if the Arcane Warrior (or a similar spec with a new name) returns with abilities that show off this new great looking melee style.
Since that demo "shipped," we've slowed down two-handers a bit.
Ah, that's good to hear. It wouldn't have taken much to make it feel much more weighty so I expect that's sorted already then.
lunarknightmage wrote...
Basically I want a character who can transition between melee attacking and spell casting. like trailer Hawke.....lol.
From what I saw this is very possible even without a melee spec. The mage switches seamlessly between blasting with fire from range to bashing with fire up close as far as I could tell.

Still not sold on the jumpy rogue stuff or anything but I suppose
gameplay videos will properly confirm/bust that concern on the combat in
general on the PC.
Yeah I'd definitely recommend leaving it until you get gameplay vids before being too worried. With the PC auto attack it will feel even more like DAO, just more deadly and responsive. I felt much more dangerous in even that small demo than I did in a whole playthrough with my dual wielding rogue to be honest, and it was nothing like Ninja Gaidan/DMC/insert other combo-em-up here.
So the Hawke family is fleeing from Lothering which has been destroyed,
moving south through the Blightlands on their way to catch a ship in
Gwaren which would take them to Kirkwall. On their way south they meet
up with Flemeth who tells Hawke to take some package to a Dalish clan-
possibly the clan from the Dalish Origin, which was moving north in
Origins?
Correct. It essentially confirms that the Dalish Warden's clan will appear in DA2 as I am certain it is the same keeper, Marethari. I'm hoping we get more connections to the origins of Origins in DA2 somehow! What I find curious is that the Hawke family must have left it late leaving Lothering as by the time of the demo they have had the route north completely cut off (Wesley and Aveline mention this as Wesley came from the road to Denerim). Surely if they had been running since Ostagar they would have left around the time the Warden is there? But according to Flemeth the Warden and Alistair are 'out of their reach' at the time of the demo.
So yeah it's possible to read into Carver's words that he and Garrett/Marion were involved in the battle at Ostagar, but I'm not sure.
I'm just wondering, is the part with Hawke and family fleeing the actual
start of the game? Its my impression then that they're fleeing from an
already destroyed Lothering at that point, no? So we would never see the
actual destruction of Lothering? Just confused on the timeline...
It is set up as the start of the game, however it is an early demo and there is nothing stopping the devs changing it for the final release. Personally I would expect a glimpse at pre-destruction Lothering too, so maybe it's merely presented in such a way for the shows? However the way the intro cinematic (in the same style as Origins) is placed it certainly 'works' as an intro. Note: In the background as you play you can see a huge plume of smoke rising from somewhere over the horizon, it could be anything but my natural assumption was that it was Lothering burning.

We had sound in our headphones. There were sound buttons on the console, we even had to make it quieter. Played rogue Marian and enjoyed it a lot. Many people around us played female Hawke as well, including guys. Mage "origin" was locked, that's why people couldn't choose it. However, I let Marian do whatever she wanted and played Bethany for some time to see what it is to be a mage.Papa Lente wrote...

Yeah, I noticed the smoke plumes in the screens and figured that was supposed to be Lothering burning. Just seems kind of odd to have Hawke from Lothering, yet once again not show the actual destruction of Lothering just like in Origins.
Oh, how was the intro cinematic!? Ever since BG, I've loved those 2D intros. Did it recap the events of Origins at all, or what was it about? Any sign of Morrigan in the intro cinematic? I only ask because waaay back there was that Game Informer behind the scenes video where you could sort of see the 2D art and thought this looked like maybe Flemeth and Morrigan:

I hope that there will be an Arcane Warrior or some other kind of "War Mage" spec that really lets us go to town with our staves!!
and, I hope I can attach a lightning rune to that Parthalan Staff and have cool electricity based attacks!!

Were any of you EuroGamers able to place Cassandra's accent by chance?
I'm not great at identifying accents I'm afraid, it sounded a little like a less strong version of the Orlesian accent from what I can remember. It would make sense I suppose, Navarra is right next to Orlais and Cassandra could have spent a good deal of time amongst Orlesian's to rise to such a high level within the Chantry. But take all that with a grain of salt as it's been a few days now and as I said I'm not great with accents on the whole.
@Brockololly: There are two such animated cinematics, the first of which occurs after the exaggerated sequence and Varric and Cassandra's scene (from what I can remember at least). This one does indeed recap events from DAO upto that point in the timeline, whilst adding other bits uniquely relevant to DA2. Cailan and Ostagar are a focus with Loghain being mentioned in passing as the betrayer, but any details beyond that I can't really remember. Flemeth is in the second one I believe, as it is played right after you finish the demo and features Varric narrating their journey through the wilds to Gwaren and onto Kirkwall. Can't remember seeing Morrigan though, but it's possible she was snuck on there without being mentioned by the narrator and thus I missed it. The cinematics are both just as well done as Origin's.
Edit: In case there is any confusion the 'intro' cinematic actually takes place after the exaggerated sequence. I call it that due to it's similarity to Origin's intro cinematic and it makes the exagerrated scene feel like one of those film scenes that appear before the credits sequence.

Bethany seems fun, I liked what banter there was between her and Hawke, think that she could be a lot of fun to bring along just for the dialogue.
Apollo, could you elaborate on this a little bit? What was it about her that seemed fun? I'm just curious about the character.

We are, yes. And I believe you'll find that most mage casts are quite a bit more physical than they were in Origins. So, yes, you'll look quite a bit more bad-ass with your staff.
To be fair, though, we're not focusing the mage class on maximal melee damage. If you want that you should go warrior or rogue (depending on whether you prefer AOE or absolute devastation to single targets).
This implies to me that Arcane Warrior won't be available as a spec, which would be a tad disappointing. I know perhaps there are problems with exactly how Hawke would get the spec seeing as how it came from a long dead elf in DAO but given the Hawke family bloodline perhaps it could be contained within some sort of family heirloom.

Come now. That character you tagged as Morrigan is clearly little red riding hood. I'm sure everyone knows we always have at least one plot with an adorable little girl going to grandma's house. It's like Bioware's answer to the cow level.
Or perhaps I'm full of crap, and that's neither Morrigan nor Little Red. Who, then? Questions...questions...

Dude, this sort of inane Morrigan speculation is what keeps me interested in DA2 until Morrigan, my Warden and Old God Baby can return from Mirror World in DA3 to save the day from Flemeth and whatever World War Hawke is going to start (you know thats the plot- come on now=]).
I'm pulling this stuff up from back in the Morrigan thread- we're serious business over there:
Here are my amazing John Madden telestrator skills:

And here are Ximena's awesome detective skills:

Come on, thats clearly Morrigan-she's the only one with a red hood!

Unless its another one of Flemeth's daughters? Another Witch of the Wilds? Or is that Flemeth herself, even though she doesn't seem the hood wearing type, especially with her new dragon hair horn thing?
Don't burst my Morrigan bubble so readily Laidlaw!

@Papa Lente Yep there was great sound on my first playthrough - really glad I took my time with the dialogue because the 2nd playthrough I could hardly hear anything. It was so annoying - I even turned around and called the EA guy over to check the console.
@Apollo Starflare I remembered what you said about the mage option being unlocked so I deliberately looked at each machine in turn to see if they had the mages unlocked, but definitely not. Playing Bethany was possible, so it gave me a good idea of what to expect. The mage class is great.
"Mike Laidlaw wrote...

Totally agree with this - depending on how close Bethany was to the darkspawn she would carry out slightly different animations - that was fun to see. BTW the fireball spell was quite something to see, definitely looked alot better to me. I'm glad party damage was turned off on that demo because I was chucking fireballs at anything that moved. Evil grin :}
"Since that demo "shipped," we've slowed down two-handers a bit."
I don't usually play as a warrior, but I really enjoyed the special attacks. I can't explain how satisfying it felt to swish that sword through 3 or 4 darkspawn. The resulting mayhem was very satisfying to see. However it did seem a bit quick. I thought the standing animations with the two-handed sword looked great as well.
@Brockololly There were some cool references to DAO in the dialogue. I loved the bit when Flemeth is talking about how there is only one way to cure the Templar from all the darkspawn blood - become a Grey Warden. (hell yes, been there, done that!) And then she goes on to say that they are too few Grey Wardens left and they are too far away (someone correct me if I got that bit wrong). The 2D art looked great, but I don't think there was any reference to DAO in that and definitely don't remember anything to do with Morrigan.

[*]2-handed Warrior impressions: Wasn't a huge fan to be honest, but maybe it's just my playstyle. The animations do feel a bit too fast and not weighty enough, despite the rogue being faster I actually felt a bit more 'button mashy' with this class. This would be something that would reduce with time though, and the demo isn't really designed for tactical fights beyond to some extent the Ogre fight (they are obviously showcasing other things at this time).
A lot of people have commented on that, especially after the gameplay video leaked, and so I did some digging. Since that demo "shipped," we've slowed down two-handers a bit. No, not to Origins slow (I personally found those anims kind of painful to watch. Who would enter into combat with a sword they couldn't swing effectively?), but we've changed what's called "the cancel window," so that you perform more of the swing before you can blend into another.
Quite pleased with the overall effect. That timing change and new audio have given two-handers quite a bit more heft.
I could kiss you right now <3.... uh, so to speak.
