I cheat... I play a mage, and it's pretty hard to spell cast when there is a giant with a two handed sword bum rushing you. So before the "incident" I strip sten of everything, right down to his jock strap... He's not so much of a problem then..

To me, it's quite simple: don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Don't want it? Don't take it. But help is help, and it's a Blight, so it's perfectly legitimate to take the help when it's offered.
There are good reasons to take him. This is not one of them.
I have no way of knowing it wont turn on me and charge in a rage. I have no way of knowing it wont do something stupid and endanger me more then it helps. I have no way of knowing it wont attract way too much of attention, and the wrong kind of it.
You could say that about every single character you meet in game....
The Witch
The Assassin are obvious ones...
What about the chantry girl.... oh wait... apparently she's hiding some secrets too....
The Templar..... well he wasn't up front right away either was he?...
At least the dog wears its heart on its sleeve....

Knowing some murdered an entire family is not quite the same as accepting someone without knowing everything about their past.
A hardened one.
And besides. Weather she wants it or not is irrelivant. If she wants me, she wants the kid. I didnt ever hear of "Ye ol Condom" in the game.
I suppose she could go down on the warden.
Horray for corrupting sweet little nuns and taking a big ol chomp out of their forbidden fruit.

Zenjamin, have you finished the game yet with Sten in your party? Once you flesh out his story, you get to know him better and he becomes quite the useful party member.
Not to make excuses for what he did, but if he was to return home without his sword, he would have been killed on sight, as no Qunari would discard their sword while they still drew breath. Once he knew his sword was lost, he paniced. By him joining you, he would be able to atone by dying in battle against the darkspawn, rather than stay in the cage until the darkspawn came. Over the course of the game, by helping against the blight, he is able to redeem himself.
He regrets what he did and wishes he could bring those people back if he could. Rather than remain in the cage, awaiting certain death, he helps the warden fight the darkspawn, because they need all the help they can get.
The wiki site or gamefaqs have nice dialogue guides, which help greatly in getting to know Sten, or you probably will end up losing approval with him otherwise whenever you speak, and thus you never get to know anything about him other than the fact that he killed that family. He has quite a deep story and the Qunari are quite an interesting race.

He sounds like a really deep interesting character then.
..... But again. As you mention, that is only with forsight and/or the prophecy and direction of a magical thing called a wiki interweb.
Neither of which my RPing warden had access to at the time.

But your RPing warden might recognize that he does genuinely regret what he did and could pay for his crimes by making himself useful. Leaving someone in a cage to be eaten by darkspawn is a bit primitive.
Then again, more than once you get the feeling that Ferelden is a primitive place. Not just because of the wet dog smell comments, but every castle seemingly has a dungeon/torture chamber. Then there are the exalted marches, which are basically ruthless crusades to force the Chantry's beliefs on other peoples.
Even the good guys in this game are a bunch of crooks, really.

As a general rule, I think getting left in a cage to be eaten by monsters is too kind a punishment for child killers.
In general, those torture chambers you mentioned might be more fitting.
Anyone here have kids?
What if it was your family that was slaughered while you were away.
Again. with hindsight, perhaps there is a different story to be told. But as a general rule, I do not think that punishment is greater then the crime.

I'm not saying slaughtering families is easily forgiven. I don't even think you forgive him when you bring him along. But you have a blight to end, one that will kill a lot more people than Sten ever did. This way you put Sten to use, and he might even die in the process. By the way, there's no doubt he proves loyal to you if you bring him. He really does sincerely want to help you end the blight to atone for his crimes.
Also I suggest you go visit a real world medieval torture chamber (I mean at a museum, obviously
) before you talk about how anyone deserves torture. There's a reason such practices are now (officially at least) outlawed in most countries.
By the way, you missed my other point entirely. The Chantry may seem like the good guys here, but how many innocent people do you think died because of the exalted marches? There aren't a whole lot of innocents in DAO. No matter how much they talk about the Light and their Holy Maker, I still think the Chantry is just a bunch of crooks.

I wonder, do you recrute Zevran?
To be honest I love Sten, he is one of my favourite characters and he is 9/10 times part of my main team. His comments are fantastic and his 'insights' are amazing on certain locations/quests.
Was I bothered with him killing the children? Yes and no.
Yes, because, when you first meet him, he was skilled enough to kill my weak Warden. And since he had no problem killing children, my Warden wasn't feeling very save either. No, because (like you can tell Alistair during the 'gossip conversation') Sten is good at what he does. If he can kill 8(?) people just with his bare hands, I wanted to see what he could do with a sword against some darkspawn.
The fact that Sten shows remorse over what he has done (in his own way), was enough for me. He wanted to die, I decided to make use of him before that happened.

If I recall correctly (which I may not), it is pretty clear talking to him still in the cage, the templar commander, and the chantry priestess that he very much regrets doing what he did and allowed himself to be captured so that he could be punished for his sins.

I think you recall correctly. I got the same vibe from him at the beginning - this guy didn't mean what he did, regrets it, and is perfectly willing to be punished for it, even if it means his death.
From his later conversations, I think this is confirmed. He panicked, he realized it when it was done, realized that, quite aside from losing his sword, he'd tossed his honor in the trash. He felt the only way he could live with that was to, actually, not live with it. He waited to to be caught, did not resist, spoke no word to defend himself, and sat in that cage waiting to die.
