Sorry if this topic has already been raised but does anyone know how to export games from mass effect 1 to mass effect 2 as I have have finished mass effect one and tried to import my save games from mass effect one but I cant even see it in the option to import characters from mass effect one to mass effect 2?

Look in the ME2 Config utility.

I tried but it simply keeps telling me that it cant find any mass effect 1 saves in mass effect 2 and repeats what youve said, I have tried using the config utility and copying and pasting the saves from ME1 into ME2 manually but it still refuses to acknowledge my save games from ME1, is this a problem with the pc version of the game?

I'm actually having a problem with this right now. I had no previous problems with importing ME1 games, but I'm having one right now.

I went back to ME1, played through the game, with the intent of having a template ME1 character with everything completed for import into ME2. I also took the time to clean up my extra ME1 characters lying around, archived them and all my extra ME2 saves. I moved the folder where I had my ME1 saves stored (I had been using a folder in my Documents folder; I ended up creating a new folder with stored ME1/ME2 saves I don't expect to use again) and then created a sub folder in my ME2 saves to hold my new ME1 character. I loaded the game, tried to import my ME1 character, was told there were no ME1 saves available, to use the utility. I smacked my head ("Right, right, my bad") and went back to use the config utility to set the new folder.

But it doesn't seem to be working. I've never had a problem in the past, but this time, it just refuses to find the saves. I took some old saves, put them in the folder - it still didn't work.

Hmm, I used my actual ME1 saved games folder, rather than putting my ME1 saves elsewhere, and that sorted it out.

You'll have to tell me a bit more. What are the directory paths you were manually copying to and from, and are you sure there are indeed ME1 export files (Char_01*****.MassEffectSave) in the ME1 save folder that are getting copied to Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ME1\\
