ETA: Oh, and you'd be amazed what sort of terrain the Mako can get through if you push hard enough. Your passengers might object to your driving, though.
(No dialogue after nearly flipping the Mako a few times, but I can imagine some comments.)

If you are just horrible against heavy opponents outdoors, just stay in the Mako, gun them down and accept the lower experience reward.

I always laugh at its ability to climb a sheer vertical cliff albeit snails pace

Yes, that's interesting.
Ran into the Thresher Maw for the first time last Thursday looking for the missing Marine recon team. I understand the tactic of whittling it down so you can kill it on foot, but for some reason the mere sight of it tends to make me keep firing both Mako weapons at it and keep firing until it finally dies.

Best part of the game for me, doing idiotic stunts in the Mako and trying to critically damage it. Makes my Warthog driving in Halo look responsible. The Mako replacement in ME2 was so much less fun.Sinapus wrote...

Oh and trying to jump directly onto any mercs etc while trying to run them over.

On topic: Personally, I found having an extreme tech or biotic team worked best rather than having an easily balanced team. My infiltrator with kaidan and garrus was pretty epic, as was my vanguard with liara and kaidan. Three sabotage/electronics are godly. So are three lift/throws. The one thing you have to worry about if using an exclusively biotic team is the electronics and decryption skill.

I didn't notice that on my first ME playthrough, but dear god the woman must be made of credits, she'll buy any old piece of junk for a ridiculous mark-up. Particularly useful after a first playthrough to get the money to pick up the Spectre VII weapons fairly early (ie. when level VII kit is but a distant dream at the level you're at) when using a new class or character.Mr_Raider wrote...
sell your stuff to the doctor on the Citadel until 1000000 credits.
No-one mentioning the merchant save-reload thing? I've found it useful with the Normandy quartermaster getting the rarer armours (Colossus and Predator L/M/H or a Serrice Council amp or omni-tool).

If you are focusing on gaining XP, finish the thresher maw outside the Mako. Also, if you're a completionist and feel like you have to survey every mineral deposit and find every insignia, find a podcast or book to listen to while driving.
- You may get addict to it. I simply cannot bring myself to skip anything in any playthrough. I tried. I'm a sucker and a powergamer. I want every sidequest done, every pixel of every planet explored, in every playthrough! Hell, it is fun! (EDIT: Final count for my current run as I finished all side quests and prepare to advance to the end of game: Writtings 15 found/10 required - Artifact 8/7 - Medallions 10/10 - Tags 4/3 - Light Metals 27/20 - Heavy Metals 29/20 - Rare Earths 30/20 - Gases 9/6 - Emblems 16/13 - Yep, it is fun... and sick!)
- Make sure you have zillion units of sick bags for the Mako crew to throw up. There are some places I'd throw up with them if I get too much In Character! Heh, I doubt anyone wouldn't need a sick bag after a Mako trip!
- Colossus X armor are the best quality and looks for all races. But it looks a lot better on the female crew. Well, unless you're a guy into pink&black.
- Equip your favorite weapon with 2 top heat absorber/damper and explosive ammo! (those that produce 500% more heat) Works wonder in Insanity difficulty, particularly if you're starting a run with a high level Shepard and every single enemy has godlike abilities and life!
- Only after quite a few runs through the game I found out that the Consort may give us a bonus reward, if we play our cards right. Wish there was a better cutscene for that! Hawt!

get spectre guns for 3 or more characters
look for predator H X or Collossus X, they do me well with armour add ons which boost your shields eg +140
after that you can play like rambo running & gunning lol

The cover and crouch system is totally different in ME1. It's nice to be able to crouch in ME1, makes for good sniper shots. However, not going into auto cover is a bit irritating, so you'll have to get used to manually entering cover.
Other than that, just take your time talking to your crew. You can really form good bonds with them, and learn a lot about the ME universe.

2. Remember the inventory!
3. Take care in your decisions.
4. Don't kill Wrex!
5. Things are repetative. Bear with it.

2. enjoy the elevator loading scene (in ME2 are so retrò gaming loading scene)
3. explore, explore, explore as it is the most amusing thing in the game (was not so possible in ME2)
4. when you are in the elevator and wait for loadings, hear the radio and try to have Tali with you... so you can use the camera to... ehm... well... see her... ops.. you'll understand...
5. do not finish the game as the end is... IMHO, terrible. The entire game story was 1000 times better then ME2 but the end is... bleah.

2. Biotics fear no barrier sheild or armour. Let them loose
3. Keep on the move as much as possible in combat if you're not in cover, especially on the harder levels
4. Make your decisions wisely
5. Ashley is a better squadmate then Kaidan

And, lol at some people mentioning that the ending of ME1 is bad. I think it is one of the better endings in videogames, the entire final battle is just full of badassery.
Also, yeah, I'd say Liara is pretty much essential if Shepard isn't an adept. Singularity is, for my money, the single most powerful ability in the game. Honestly, though, I'm taking a liking to Tali and her AI hacking ability recently. Use it on a geth rocket trooper for maximum fun.

2. Don't choose who pick with you just because he/she's your favourite. At first do some side quests to obtain XP and gears, then you can team up with you fav. buddies whenever you want.
3. The characterization of the teammates is one of the best thing of the game (except for a pair of them) so talk to them, if you want a pure shooter with not so much dialogues go with Halo or Doom.
4. Every enemy is particularry vulnerable to a weapon or a power, find out wich one is and things will go a lot easier.
5. Save a copy or your favourite playtrought into a Cd or a Usb. There're tons of people who lost theire favourite Shepard after a memory crash who got discouraged and put aside the games.
And, sixth, as extra: enjoy the ride as more as you can ^^
