Jacob and Barrier

 So I've been noticing a lot of talk about how LOTSB patches Jacob's barrier. I don't have LOTSB yet, but I never seemed to have a problem with his powers so I'm just curious, what exactly is was the problem pre-dlc?

Basically, he spams Barrier, which puts Pull Field on cooldown, which is half the reason anyone brings him along.

Since it was a defensive power, Jacob would fire it off on his own ( even if auto squad powers turned off ). That means if you wanted to use pull-field it would a lot times be unavailable because of the cool-down for barrier.

But couldn't you just not put any points in his barrier and thus avoid the whole problem, or does the game automatically put a point in squadmate's loyalty powers? It's been a while since I played ME2.

I'm pretty sure it throws 1 point into it automatically.

Personally, I prefered the ME1 three power option system for squad powers

FULL - Squad uses all powers themselves

Defensive- Squad only uses defensive powers

Off- You have to micro manage them but they wont be 'tards and cast Barrier or Fortification right before you had intended to lift those husks swarming towards you.

Automatically adds when you do the loyality mission.

Definitely. I have no idea why they took that out, it was fantastic.

Yes, the game puts one point in the bonus power after the loyalty mission.

LotSB is great because now there is the option to reallocate the points. So, you respec Jacob and just don't spend the one point in Barrier. Problem solved. He doesn't spam the power, but in my exp. he dies more often, too.

May just be me, but I'm happy with him being dead more often if it means I get to choose when he uses powers like I'm supposed to with the setting turned off.

With LotSB you can take away his bonus power and retrain his other three skills to max. Which means squad incendary ammo and chain-pulls, since the AI only has this one skill to spawn.



How does Jacob use barrier after LotSB? Is it now viable to let barrier as skill for him?

The same way he did before. If he has it, he uses it regardless of auto squad power setting. The only thing you do with LotSB is removing that point in barrier.
