I'm thinking it's gotta be a memory leak of some sort

Perhaps, but its with your operating system setup....not the game.
I only say that because not everyone experiences a memory leak.

My specs:
CPU: Intel E8500 dual core 3.12ghz
RAM: 4Gigs DDR2 800mhz
Video Card: ATI HD4870 512meg  old Catalyst drivers 8.12 (they work...why change? ^_^
Sound Card: Creative X-FI Xtreme audio
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X48
OS: Win XP Pro SP2
PSU: Antec 850W True Power
Monitor: LG Flatron W2252TQ 1680x1050
Keyboard/mouse: Logitech G15 and G9

With this computer DA:O runs flawless. Lowest fps is 30 but majority plays at 60fps.
No crashes or graphic glitches.
CPU usage is 100% but it not stressing the cpu temp at all (56°C).
RAM usage levels out at 48% and I play for 6 hours straight.
I play the game with no background programs except for ATI Tray Tools and the G15/G9 software.

I hope this helps in some way. :)

Neither do I have performance problems, but both cores at 100% all time :(

Unfortunately, my equip is a dell xps 1640 so poorly designed for heat extraction and ventilation that, even with a zalman nc-2000 cooler, the laptop heats me more than Beyoncé :(

At least we are aproaching winter and its cold so I will save money thanks to this 100% cpu usage .)

Well, any PC game related issue is based on incompability between the users system and the software.
That is not to say the fault lies completely with the users system. Memory Leaks usually happen because of not optimal programming in the software that may exploit certain systems to cause errors.

Specific system specs favor these errors but the problem only exists because the software allows it.

There is a myriad of different system constellations that play a game, however the game always stays the same. Developers cannot expect users to adjust their well-working system for just one game.

My game runs amazing but I still get the cutscene lockups sometimes. And sure, it has to do with my system. But it has also to do with the game because I dont really have issues playing other games.

Jiron, I actually have taken the side of my machine off before to increase cooling. However leaving it off for any period of time is not an option. My kids would find the inside of the case far too tempting. Particularly my 2 year old who would probably use my case as a place to store his half eaten PB&J sandwiches ;)

But thanks for the suggestion.... Just wondering did the 100% CPU issue ever get resolved in NWN or is it still out there?

they added an option to force core affinity to the .ini (so you don't have to tab out to set it) but otherwise it still has the issue on multicore systems from what I understand

I was always under the understanding that CPU usage at 100% for a game was normal...obviously, you would want all your resources to be used when playing a game..

Am I wrong here? I could have sworn I read a story about this online years ago.

I think people who are having lag and issues are just noticing the CPU usage as a problem? I have 100% CPU use also but my game runs perfectly smooth nearly all the time (there's sometimes a slight jolt for like 1 second after loading..but then plays fine)

I could be wrong..just stating what I thought I remembered from the past over this issue..

I've pointed it out elsewhere, it's not inherrently the 100% usage that's the problem, but how certain processors handle doing the different things going on at the same time. There's a well documented issue with AMD Phenom and X2 multicore processors creating a "memory leak" because they fail to release threads properly when the task is complete (try googling)... some users have had success with software updates and such, but I've been rather disappointed in how AMD has "fixed" it since the new processors coming out still have the same problem

Last time I checked support knows about it but was unsure even where to begin addressing it. I stopped getting crashes myself after I uninstalled ati tray tools and any other gpu mod software. I also toned down my graphics. For whatever reason that seemed to take down the CPU usage as well although it is still a problem, I haven't crashed in days.

I have 100% CPU, brand new build only 1 week old. So far no heat issues, but a little troubling. I've only played to the start of the Grey Wardens initiation, so I don't know what's in store. I don't seem to be having any performance issues - plays great.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with all current drivers

Phenom II 3.1 BE, no OC yet

MSI GTS 250 1gb

MSI nForce 750a SLI mobo

4 GB DDR3 1300 g.skill

Running 1680x1050 medium settings fairly good.

Slight pop sound during some speech transitions

GPU temps in 60's, NB 50's, and CPU in 60's playing DA (i have great cooling tho setup)

I do have DMA enabled. I have PhysX enabled.

One thing I did notice was that in the configure DA app, on the summary there is no driver listed in the field - however - in the display section it shows a bunch of dll's in that driver section. Not sure if that is an issue?

Try taking a look at the link above; it doesn't exactly relate to the 100% CPU usage, but you may find some valuable information.

No, a game using 100% or near it is not really news or anything wrong. But it seems DA is doing something different as it is 100% usage, all the time. The graph in task manager is a straight line, no variation at all. This seems to be a bit odd, although it causes me no problems, and judging by the cpu temperature, doesn't really seems to be actually stressing the cpu as much as you would think...

3326MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 (beta drivers)

SB X-Fi Audio Gamer edition (latest drivers)

I also have 100% cpu problems but it does'nt slow down for me.. i see minor freezes in the game but so i've been reading it might be the phyx controls in my graphics card. I did'nt get a chance to play the game fully because still trying to solve my sound issue so i can't give much of an imput

The 100% cpu thing sure is strange. If I run in window mode, and have vertical sync ON in options, my cpu load drops to normal. All other things you can change in graphics and sound doesnt seem to matter. ONLY window mode with vertical sync ON solves it for me.

For those who are having lagging problems, Dragon Age has a serious memory leakage problem. If you are playing for more than three hours, its starts to deteriorate pretty fast and increases the loading time.

Exiting out of the game, and loading it again helps slightly.

I to am having this rather annoying issue, which with my system you'd think I wouldn't get this kind of FPS hits an slight stuttering and it happens after about 30 mins to an hour or so of playing. I end up having to reload my game to get rid of the FPS hit I get, I'm still not totally sure if its that the CPUs are being used at 100% or if its a memery leak but I'd say its CPU related cause  I've never played a game that used this much of my CPU like this. :(

System:
AM2 X2 5400+ @ 2.8GHz
4Gigs DDR2 800MHz
GigaByte HD 4890OC 900MHz Core, 975MHz (Stock)
MSI K9A2GM V3 mobo
Realtek AL888 8Ch Audio

Methinks it not be coincidence that the people with problems (100% CPU usage isn't a problem people, everyone has that) all seem to have old AMD CPUs.

Does anyone with an Intel, or new AMD have this issue?

I have the 100% CPU "symptom" as well, but it does not seem to affect game play for me as of right now (I have played 3 characters and roughly 10-20% completion on each). I am using an ASUS GVT-50 X-5 laptop. intel dual core processor p8700 2.53ghz. nvidia video card 9800M model. I am running the game at 1650x1080 resolution, high graphics, high detail, vert sync on, frame buffer on, AA off. I was having some problems with frame rates with AA x2.

Since changing AA to off I have no problems. I have also downloaded content (chest, shale, blood dragon armor, lucky stone and character respecialization). I have not downloaded or installed any of the bioware patches (1.01a or B).

I played through for the first week just fine, and recently, I went to start the city elf origin and cant even get through the first cutscene. The sounds cracks and the screen begins skipping. Its awful, the game comes to almost a halt. I can wait it out and it will eventually subside, but only for a matter of minutes before the same sort of thing happens later in the game. It has made this game unplayable for myself and unless this is fixed, I cannot play the game.

Well guys, run DAO with windowed mode.

It's somewhat *strange* and I don't know the actual reason or mechanism, but this will certainly reduce cpu usage. In my pc, current cpu usage is variably 40-80% in windowed mode, while continually 100% in full-screen mode. Also, it seems that this will prevent memory leak issue - I've never seen the memory usage over 1.0G since on windowed mode(700-800M vari) while 1.4G+ on full-screen after playing 3-4h.

I should point out that I do not suffer the same problems of "CPU" lag that others are experiencing here. My cpu maxes out at 100% as it does in any game that takes full advantage of duel core systems. And this does not cause lag. I did however through testing and process of elimination discover that for my current setup. The 1.01B patch causes unplayable frame rate loss.

Specs:
CPU: AMD X2 4400+ (939 pin)
Motherboard: Asus A8N Deluxe
Memory: 4 x 1 gig Mushkin 3200 DDR
2 x 150gig Raid 0 western digital harddrives
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
Video: EVGA 9800 GT 512

Based on my "specs" you can see my system is much more leagacy then most peoples and therefore you would think I would be impacted more so by an old cpu based on this line of thinking which is not the case. Infact My game play runs smooth as butter with everything maxed upto and including the FPS killer AA which I run 8x maxed.

Indepth information on my specific problems  that i had can be found in this thread. But I thought i'd add some info onto this thread that I noticed differed from others who had similar hardware and think more info is better then less when trying to find commonalities.
