I think the viper is an awesome sniper. I'm currently on my first insanity playthrough, and it has been quite easy with the infiltrator class. With the Mantis i had barely any ammo, and had no room for error, as every shot with the mantis counted a great deal. With the viper there is a lot more room for error, and the ammunition is more plentiful. I haven't yet tried the widow as i'm just about to go into the collector ship, so i'll pick it up there, hopefully its a lot better than the mantis.

This pretty much sums up the reason why I went back to Viper'ing.

The Widow is a fine sniper rifle, and perfectly accomplishes the whole '1S1K' mentality both by it's huge damage per shot (so you often only need one) and it's absurd clip (so you only get one). If that's your thing and you're sniper crazy, cool.

The Viper, on the other hand, is a sniper rifle that thinks it's a battle rifle, and consequently is *significantly* more flexible. It does sniping well (though of course, not 1S1K on anything above basic grunt level)  but can also double up as a longer ranged variant of the Mattock or Vindicator. For me, it's greater flexibility and higher DPS are of far greater worth than the Widow's massive damage per shot and ridiculously restrictive use pattern.

@Besetment, never seen or heard of that problem before.

So when you rough aim at some dude's head and then scope, the reticle is exactly on the head area every time? Sometimes it is for me but most of the time I rough aim for the head, scope and the reticle is way off to the right.

I dunno why its like this but there are old threads about it like this one.

I really, really dislike the Viper; it doesn't feel like a sniper rifle at all and the ammo increase, all things consider, only amounts to 10 additional kills if you are perfect with it.

I use the mantis on soldier runs (yes the entire time, I don't care if the gun runs out of ammo) and the Widow on my infiltrators.

10 additional kills.

That amounts to twice what a Mantis can manage... as you say, if you are perfect with it. By anyone's standards, that isn't 'only' a minor increase.

To me, it is.  10 vs. 20 kills, assuming perfect play, is a minor increase as in either case, in a lot (most?) of firefights you will need to still find more ammo before it's over if you rely solely on your Sniper rifle.  10 kills is not a small amount in most fights; it's more then enough to open a space up to move closer and really engage the enemy.

Add in that it is much easier to make 10 perfect shots then 60, and you are looking at an average kill increase of 4-7, which gets a big whoop from me.

This, also,  might be a play style thing.  I almost never just hangback and snipe the entire firefight.  I usually use the sniper rifle to thin the crowd  by 25%-35% and then move in. I usually try to use all my weapons evenly with the Soldier, and I play a hybrid Sniper/CQC Infiltrator. I have never had a problem with ammo count on either the Mantis or the Widow.

I did have  problems with Viper's need to put 3+ bullets into a target before it drops through.

and Viper still doesn't feel like a sniper rifle

This happpens very often for me. Does it do that on pc too ? I thought it was just because of the stupid auto aim....

It's interesting because that's kind of why I took Flashbangs as a bonus power. More often then not now (I took the Widow by the way, but I used the Viper as soon as I got it until I got the Widow) I toss a flashbang and a lot of enemies stagger, I then go into time dilation and pick off someone. Flashbangs are actually a rather glorious boon for a sniping infiltrator I've found. The viper can pick off a staggered enemy in one time dilation, and so can the Widow. The Mantis can sometimes take out a staggered foe but it doesn't always cut through the heavier defenses. Honestly as an Infiltrator I use flashbangs more often then I use cloak, and I usually use cloak if I need to change position and want to try and line up kill shots on bigger targets.

Ditto and a good call IMO... I too went for the Flashbangs (specifically the "Improved", lvl4 version),making it part of my "Shock and Awe Infiltrator" main build.   Bangers to 'shock' targets and the Cloak to leave em in 'awe', right before I drop em *LOL*!    I like the syngery of the Bangers bonus (ie: techy) w/ the Infiltrator; 2nd fave being Geth Shield Boost when I'm feeling frisky and less sneaky.   Once I nabbed the Widow, I stopped using the Mantis, but still regularly toss it to squadmates -- especially Thane.   I'll utilize the Viper myself when I'm expecting hoard enemies, or feel like I'll need the cushion of an ammo surplus.

After all that's said, there's nothing wrong w/ having only the Mantis/Viper when going for a different training option on the Collector Ship for a diferent experience.   Even w/ only those 2, you gets your 1-shot kills and lead-slingin' option too!
