I've never been a fan of the health bar thing for enemies as it breaks immersion for me, but how else could you tell an enemies health, armour or shield status? Don't mind one for the player and squad as that strikes me as being something your HUD would display.

you show an enemies health by them being alive or dead. what other shooters out there have health bars? i dont want to see anything on the screen that doesnt need to be there. bioware HAS to get rid of the rock paper sissors aspect of combat in order to remove the health bars tho, and i dont see them doing that at all.

Most shooters use health bars too and I cannot remember I ever played a (hybrid) RPG game without health bars. I agree with ryoldschool; they're a critical part of the game. You can argue how best to display crucial info (ME2 uses pretty large bars, I wouldn't mind smaller ones) but you need some info about how things are going (you, your squad and the enemy). BTW, (health) bars also show how much damage you do thus helping figuring out what works best against different types of enemies.

in my expert knowledge of all things shooters, id have to say theres alot more games that dont show health bars. maybe youll have your own characters health bar on screen, but youll rarely see an enemies health bar. imagine if gears or halo had health bars, itd look ridiculous. im not trying to compare ME to any other game here tho. i just think seeing huge yellow, red, and blue bars above my enemies is completely immersion breaking. too bad bioware loves rock paper scissors.

Halo - true does not have health bars on enemies, but this game is much more interesting than Halo - especially the replay value. I hope the make the next game as good as this one - it would not be wise for them to change too many things.

Not to mention that the lore in ME2 goes on and on about targeting VIs and whatnot. It would seem a bit odd to have no idea what condition your opponent is in when you've got a dedicated computer figuring it all out for you.

Health bars make sense in ME 2 due to the rock paper scissors aspect of the game (unless they start showing shepard shield power style overlays or obviously more bulky armor to enemies I don't really see what else they could do) but I have to disagree about most shooters having health bars for enemies. I can't really think of many modern shooters that have health bars considering games like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Uncharted, Halo, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Singularity, Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, MAG, Metal Gear etc, etc, etc, all don't.

 Left 4 Dead, Bioshock

I thought those two games did have health bars, or at least health meters on a scale of zero to 100.

For you yes, for enemies no, which is why I made the distinction.

Veins are annoying but I can live with that. As for health bars, I really like the rock paper scissors aspect of the game, makes things more interesting and the colored health/status bars allows for such a play - do not wish them to remove that system just for some HUD display presentation "issue/preference".

As some suggested, maybe they can "improve" the presentation but again you cant please everyone with a single style of presentation.

Lastly, I am sure the forums will be flooded with "OMG! ME3 has finally completed its transformation from Shooter RPG to a pure Shooter! threads" if they remove the health bars.

My bad, you're right about all those shooters Sinosleep. Haven't played any of them for a while, too busy playing DA:O and ME2 I think. Installed FO3 Vegas yesterday and enemies have health bars too though it's not really a shooter.

I guess I've got used to health bars, but I can't remember missing them while playing Call of Duty, Bioshock, F.E.A.R, Crysis etc. But those games don't use the rock-paper-scissor system ME2 does. I like it and it works reasonably well with the power system. I think Bioware did a great job with Shep's shield. You don't have to look at your shield bar, you'll hear it break and you can see it too. The cooldown notifier is nicely integrated into the crosshair. But those (health) bars are huge. I hope they come up with a similar system like Shep's shield or at least give players the option to turn those bars on and off in ME3.

i like the vein effect but i hope they don't do it too much like in me2. the problem was being on low health meant ridiculous veins stretching across the screen, for me i had it multiple times where they were almost touching each other, and it gets really annoying when your trying to fire cos you can't see anything

I don't like the veins either. The red glow from the first game was enough.

The grunting is worse than the veins to me - although I don't like the veins either.

Turning off the Hud completely is an option I would like to see and I can't understand why it isn't there. It would enhance immersion and add an element of difficulty that is different from just pasting more protections on enemies. I would definitely use it if it were there.

theres some things that can be easily shown on screen without health bars like barrier and tech armor, but thats only half the protections out there. but then again barrier and shields are the only things thatd need to be shown anyways and those are all things we have in ME2 now that represent enemy protections.

if i removed health bars in ME2, i dont think id be concerned about who had protections up the way the game currently presents itself, other then regular shields not having a visual representation on enemies. but we could do something similar to tech armor for shields.

id rather see shields, barriers and the like rather then a bar above all the enemies heads. it just seems like an old system. i dont think it should be revamped so much as i think it should be removed.

The only instances I can think of where the effect has been a detriment for me are those in which the damage direction indicator (the little red semi-circle that shows you what direction you were just hit from) is made difficult to see by the near-death effects. But the veins themselves have never blocked my ability to see the enemy I was attempting to take down, and I have never associated the effect with an in game death.

I like the effect, don't have time to look at healthbar when playing aggressive, but i do believe it should be lowered, when you have 20% health left, you can hardly tell whats what in midst of combat.

I hate this effect so much as I play Vangaurd only and wish they have the option to remove it.

It's the 22nd century. They'd have the ability to scan people and obtain health info so it makes perfect sense to have the HUD the way it is. I'm not a great enough player to run around in the red Rambo style and survive and I like to see the state of my enemies at all times so I want the health bars and red vein effects to remain as they are. I agree that the debs should allow players to customise the HUD display so that experts can enjoy a more difficult experience. But to me, Mass Effect is an RPG, not a pure shooter and is aimed at a wide gaming audience rather than purely a hardcore set of expert players. BioWare and EA are in this to make money and that means pleasing as many as possible. Hopefully ME3 will offer more expansive customisation over game play, upgrades and on-screen display. Having seen the promo bids for it though I would say it'll be be very much the same ad ME2...

i agree, sheps got all kinds of mods and upgrades which can be shown on the HUD. itd be really awesome if the option to customize a HUD was given. not just hitting start and chngeing the settings, but using the omnitool and genereating a holographic interface, like dead space, and you changed the settings by tweeking your characters mods. instead of seeing selecting in the settings "enemy health bars shown: yes/no" wed have the option to remove our mod that enhanced combat awareness(which in turn added radar on the hud). itd be really immersive if the entire game took every aspect of the game integrating into itself like that.

i thought the E3 vids didnt feature enemies with individual floating health bars. i think there was one enemy health bar that showed in the center of the top of the screen and shuffled between whoever you were aiming at.

AHHHH NECROOO, lol but you guys are right that the red vein thing needs to be toned down a little because it sometimes hinders my ability to see say a charging Krogan on the edge of my screen.

Spamming Troll @ I saw the 360 Kinect demo gameplay footage and I'm sure the HUD was the same as ME2. There may have been a few tweaks but essentially it seemed pretty much the same. Of course I could be totally wrong on that one though!!

The vein-effect is ugly, but I see it as a disincentive to getting hit. :)
