My computer isn't good enough to run both Steam and ME1 and my HDD that Steam file is on doesn't have enough room for ME1. I moved ME1 to my secondary HDD and tried running it without Steam so I can play it without lagging out. I have done this before and it worked with no problem but now it gives me Steam errors. I bought the game but can't play it...
Is there anything I can do about this other then running through Steam?
ME1 Steam problem...

Uninstall Steam, reinstall it on your second hard drive, and then install Mass Effect.

Neither of my hard drives has room for all the Steam games I want and thats not the main problem. The big problem is I can't run both Steam and Mass Effect... I had said 'so I can play it without lagging out.' which may have been the wrong choice of words since it doesn't lag me OUT of game, just makes playing it impossible [lowest settings]. Playing the game otherwise [lowest settings] went soooooo smooth.
I was able to move it from Steam drive over to secondary drive and run it. All I want is to know if this is still possible and, if so, how do I do this?

If your Steam games won't all fit onto a single hard drive then the you may need to get a whole new, bigger hard drive. I'm not sure if Steam will let you play games that are installed to a different drive than Steam itself.
I'm also a little confused as to why running Steam in the background would interfere with the game's performance. What are you full system specs? (Processor, video card, RAM, and operating system)

P4, ATI 1300, 2.6 gigs [physical 4] and XP... in the order you asked.
Its a terrible system I know but I have no money, job, government assistance, ect so I'm stuck with what I've got. If theres some kind of digital backup for DAO I'm just gonna download and play that instead.
But yeah I was able to run ME without Steam a few months back. I thought I had set it to run as admin for it to work that way but.... I dunno. All I know is I've got 3 hours logged but I've played about 20. I did the same thing with EVE Online that I got through Steam, didn't want to re-download it so I moved it to the other drive.

I just remembered what I did to make it lag less... I had Steam in offline mode while playing the game. It still lagged a bit, iirc, and there were some annoying bugs, but it ran better then online mode for some reason. It was only EVE that I was able to run w/o Steam. I'll just play it after I get a new computer. I've been wanting to play it on full settings anyway
And thank you very much for helping me!

I think that one possible way to reduce Steam's impact on game performance- other than playing in offline mode- is to disable the Steam Community in-game. You do this by right-clicking a game in your library, select "Properties", and in the General tab of the window that pops up uncheck "Enable Steam Community".

Thanks again SSV Enterprise
I'm gonna try that when I get space to install the game again.
