I hated popular stuff way before it was popular to hate popular stuff.

(hoping against past experience that those two first key strokes look like an arrow pointing up.)

I never hated mood rings, but I always hated aluminum beer can and knitted hats.  I never hated those nylon shirts with the printed pictures on them, but I hate those crappy pastel greens and blues combo clothings.  I never hated the Magic 8 Ball, but I always hated 90120 -- I never watched a single episode.  Yay me.

I never hated Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix or Styx, but I always hated Krokus, Megadeath and Poison.

So it's a crap shoot as to whether or not I hate something popular, because I don't care if something's popular to hate it or like it.  In fact, Billy Joel was really popular, but I always thought his music was great to listen to.  By the same token, one of my favorite intro bands was one called Starz and they disappeared for over 25 years and are now making a sort of reunion tour.  Go figure.  You probably never heard of them or the Fabulous Poodles.

I don't care about WoW.  I don't hate it.  I just don't care enough one way or the other.

And who the effing 'ell is Justin Beiber anyway?  Don't tell me.  I really don't care.

Facebook - is full of Noobz and Idiotz and your friendz find you easily there.
American Idol - repetitive, boring and definitely I'm better than most of the Amateurs that sing in this show.
Justin Beiber (this is justified by the fact that he's 16 and hasn't hit puberty) <- :pinched:
Hannah Montana - I don't know, but Hilary Duff is absolutely a goddess compare to this freak.

Oh, tight denim was allright compared to tight spandex pants from the glammy side of hairmetal. :crying:

Hating popular stuff can be reasonable, as long as there is a logical foundation for hating it or a deep personal bias. And by "deep personal bias" I mean a real problem with something, not a superficial and trivial bias.

It seems like every time something goes mainstream a group of people automatically start hating it. Sometimes the hate is justified, sometimes it isn't. But what is the point? Why can't people just respect other people's interests? For example:

World of Warcraft
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Star Wars (fans used to get called nerds when it first came out, from what I've heard)
Star Trek
Stargate Universe
Twilight
Warhammer
Warhammer 40,000
StarCraft II (Battle.net 2.0 does suck, but the actual gameplay is average)
Halo
Facebook
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Dungeons & Dragons
American Idol
Xbox/Xbox 360 (I admit, I kind of hate Xbox, since it ruined gaming)
Google
Justin Beiber (this is justified by the fact that he's 16 and hasn't hit puberty)
Hannah Montana

Wow - second jawb THAT YOU PAY FOR
call of dooty - another shooter, made by activision
star wars - generic
star trek - pretentious
stargate - never heard of it
twilight - apparently its a vampire book about christian marriage values
warhammer - grimdark fantasy
warhammer 40k - grimdark scifi with **** and soviet russian epiphlets
starcraft 2 - an overly hyped sequel rehash
halo - how many halo games do you need?
facebook - its pointless, its creator calls facebook users ''dumb****s'' for sharing info so easily, an accidental billionaire.
call of dooty cashin exp - another exp to another hyped up shooter
DnD - silly arguments concerning the alignment morality
american idol - where many normal, lazy, talentless people try and gain z-list celebrity status
xbox/360 -  you just said it
google - its attempting to become the final boss of the internet, invades your privacy without telling
justin beiber - moar pop crap thats loved by teen girls
hannah montana - who?

certain conspiracy theories were debunked in this reply.Image IPB

Neither was 3rd.

Nor 2nd.

Nor 1st.

Only Chainmail.

No way that the people who own the rights to the series get to decide what that series is.  Only the "fans" get to decide that - and by fans, I mean people who were introduced to one version of something even if that version was a big change from what that thing originally was.

Huh.

Because the unwashed mashes destroy everything they touch. Just look at the internet, its all the proof you need that humanity is doomed at this rate.

Halo, Starcraft, and Warhammer 40k, haven't been ruined for me yet however. Warcraft was ruined, as well as Star Wars. And don't get me started on the state of the Call of Duty series.

I don't think it's so much that people HATE popular things...so much as they hate that things get popular. Avatar, for example, was a perfectly adequate movie. But people got so fanatical about it, that any enjoyment I could possibly get from it is ruined by idiots walking down the street acting like it's the 2nd coming of christ.

The same is true for the Dark Knight. It was alright...worth a watch, but not my favorite movie of the year. The second someone hears that, however, the insults start flinging, people start asking "How can you not LOVE it? Why do you hate it? You just don't appreciate film!" So, by proxy, I begin to hate the film...not because of the film itself, but because of the moronic fanboys that it attracts.

Everyone wants to be elitist.

How do you be elitist?

You dislike something that is popular and diminish its core values in your own eyes. Bonus points if it is something you don't particularly like doing.

He who writes for fools will always find a large audience. I believe that's a quote from our third United States President, Bruce Lee.

In algebraic terms, the majority of people are retards who survive from day to day by sheer luck. Therefore, if something is popular it is only because a great many of these people enjoy the product which means the product itself is inherently retarded in some way.

Take, for example, Muse. There were always whiny music nerds, but their first three albums were impressive and showed alot of range and depth. Almost no one listened to those records, aside from the third one which almost sold enough copies for them to do their laundry.

Now, two albums of pure bullsh*t (and a Twilight crossover for the love of God) later, they are one of the biggest bands on Earth. So it is not really that I hate them because they are popular, I hate them because now they suck fat balls. Coincidentally, now they are hugely popular because most people like music that sucks fat balls (see: Katy Perry).

Who the effin' 'ell is Muse?

Don't tell me. I really don't care.

Like I said, I'm probably way overthinking it (in some other place in some other when.)

Some people, as it was said earlier, just gotta hate on something. And a lot of times that hate doesn't even make any sense. Just as sometimes the response of someone by others to a point of view can sometimes generate a lot of 'heat' even when it shouldn't really. I personally don't get it, for the most part, even though, to some degree, I think I can understand what pushes it.

I don't think it's about being elitist (which something apparently a lot of folks hate, elitism, like trying to be the superlative best there is is a bad thing or something...) it's about doing something to attempt to make your self feel better by dissing something else. That a lot of people like it, even better, now you can claw your way to the top by climbing over a pile of bodies numbering in the thousands. Yay you. (and that's a totally vapid and generic 'you' plural, general, by the way...)

The stuff I don't like, I don't like for personal reasons. And I don't mean, like these deep seated and emo-psycho babble personal reasons. I just mean that personally, for me, I don't like these things.

WoW? Never played it. Can't seem to even get up the desire to check it out. Don't hate it, don't like it. Don't really have an opinion. That's true of most things for me. I'm a t-shirt and blue jeans kind of guy, pretty laid back with some wild ideas running around the old braincase. Beyond that, I've been known to provide some level of entertainment value for my friends and passersby who really do have a sense of humor.

I don't know that I can say I really hate anything with a passion. I don't even really 'hate' on the folks that most of us dismissively label, "the masses." Whoever they are in that moment of time, I just figure they really don't know any better. It's forgiveable.

World of Warcraft - MMO's dont interest me at all
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - liked the first one, no interest in the second
Star Wars - i liked the movies 3-6... 1 and 2 no interest
Star Trek - i like it
Stargate Universe - first dozen or so episodes were basically repeating the same plot, hate it with a passion
Google - still does what its meant to
Justin Beiber - decent voice, and with good influences he'll mature into a really good artist
Hannah Montana - i still have nightmares from babysitting. hannah montanna hours on end

basically its become popular to hate popular things.. all the cool kids are doing it.. didnt you know? haha

like what you want, hate what you want.  but remember its not all black and white.. even things you hate can have interesting or good elements and things you like have the opposite.

World of Warcraft - this I hate on a personal level; simply said, I've lost friends to a game, people who lost contact with the outside world because of an MMO...

Halo - I don't dislike Halo, actually, but I despise the attitude of a large portion of the fanbase. Just before opening the BioWare forums I was reading yet another of IGN's Halo boot-licking articles, and one that was supposedly focused on the flaws of the franchise - it was more of apologetic than anything. It may have revolutionized console shooters, but that doesn't real mean a damn if you're a PC player. Plus, there are many things that were done better or first by other games. Combat Evolved was great (maybe Reach too), but the other Halo's are just... meh.

Xbox 360 - it's a dumbed down PC, where everything about the fantastic concept of free decision by the customer regarding software and hardware is thrown out for pure monopoly. Its hardware is pure garbage by today's standards, it's expensive and only someone who doesn't know how to build a PC himself will whine about it being cheaper and easier to use. As someone said earlier, "ignorance is bliss".

Twilight... seriously? Because it's awful?

You've probably heard them without knowing it.

They're much bigger in England/The UK than anywhere else, I reckon. Technically they're up there, but their songs aren't really that great.

Thats why I don't like dark night, I didn't mind the movie but the fans ruined it for me too. Heath Ledgers Joker isn't the best Joker. Period.

I've only played the first Halo, it was fun, but I don't get why its so popular. Its just another fairly standard shooter.
I've been posting on other forums/facebook about my dislike for F1 2010, its not fun and the glorified go-karts are too easy to drive.

World of Warcraft : I'm not a fan of MMO's.  I am a fan of Warhammer.  I'm not a fan of cutesy.  WoW just fails for me on many levels, but if there's anything close to "hate" I might have for it, it is only the sense that many other MMO's get dismissed because of the popularity of WoW (but I don't like MMO's in general, so there's nowhere near the passion needed for "hate".)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 : It's a FPS.  I'm not a fan of FPS games.  No hate, just disinterest.

Star Wars (fans used to get called nerds when it first came out, from what I've heard):  Fans of anything niche are usually considered "nerds" or "geeks" by the mainstream majority, though super-heroes and sci-fi are pretty close to mainstream now.  Anycase, I've never been a big fan of Star Wars - I think the whole Jedi concept is hackneyed and poorly executed.  The first film was great, would have been awesome if it had stopped there.  The prequel trilogy was a travesty of filmmaking with a humongous budget.  These films were so bad I needed some catharsis.

Star Trek: Close to the same thoughts as Star Wars, save even the worst Star Trek tv series or movie was worlds better than Phantom Menace, Clone Wars the cartoon or the Ewok Adventures.  Newest Star Trek movie was pretty awesome, IMO.  Overall I can take or leave Star Trek.

Stargate Universe:  I really like Stargate Universe.  I didn't enjoy SG-1, and found the original movie passable, but I really liked Atlantis.  Universe, for me, is a more enjoyable show than BSG ended up being.  I know, heresy.

Twilight:  Ugh, ok, here I'm guily if I let myself be honest.  Fundamentally I would defend a writer's right to make their own universe with its own rules, write to their audience, and say "if you don't like it, don't read it."  I look at the explosion of "paranormal romance" though and just see how much worse the "women wanting men who are bad for them" phenomenon gets when you make them fall for MONSTERS.  As much as I enjoyed their work, I blame Anne Rice and Joss Whedon for screwing up the vampire mythos - opening the door, if you will, for the soap opera romance of Twilight and Vampire Diaries and the like.  Really, as much as I can joke with others that "vampires don't sparkle!" I should just let this go and not be a hypocrit.
But, honestly, I hate Twilight something fierce.

Warhammer: I like Warhammer quite a bit.

Warhammer 40,000:  I like the 40K computer games (Dawn of War and such), but otherwise I'm indifferent to this setting.  I think it's sad that Starcraft is just a more popular "homage" (being polite there) of 40K.

StarCraft II (Battle.net 2.0 does suck, but the actual gameplay is average):  Starcraft 2 is quite good, IMO.

Halo:  Halo brought about recharging shields, limited weapon inventory, easy transitions from foot to vehicle in the same environment, and (at least up to the time of it's release) the best cooperative FPS storymode.  It was successful for many reasons.  I enjoyed playing it.  I think it becoming such a big, branching franchise is a bit sad, but if people enjoy it so be it.  I think maybe a lot of anti-MS / anti-XBOX / pro-Sony / pro-PS people hate Halo for being such a success for XBOX and MS and helping the XBOX survive, be successful, and become (at least for a limited time) the king of consoles.

Facebook : I do hate Facebook.  I hate the whole implementation of social networking and what it means and how it has changed so many people.  This and twitter.  Partly because so many people default to it that many feel they NEED to have it just to be able to access their friends and family, let alone contests and online information about many things.  There's the story of the creator.  There's the invasion of privacy.  I have a long list of reasons why I think it's a bad thing beyond it being so popular - but I will freely admit I wouldn't hate it if it were a niche thing.  The hate comes from the frustration at seeing it grow and thrive while I have a long list of reasons I think it's a bad thing.

Call of Duty: Black Ops : See MW2 comment above.

Dungeons & Dragons : I strongly dislike 3rd Editions - it's not for me.  I love 4th, 2nd, 1st and Basic, though.  If I could squeeze the last droppings of the 3E stuff I dislike that still exist in 4E (feats, for example), I would proclaims 4E the best RPG on the market.  As is, there is too much of the 3E / MTG mindset embedded in the 4E system, making it a great if flawed product.
3E fans mostly hate 4E because it's not 3E.  Like 2E fans hated 3E... and 1E fans hated 2E.  And 4E fans hate Essentials.  It's a cycle, and no, 3E fans, your dislike of 4E is no more justified than any other editions' fans dislike of the edition that replaced their first/favorite.

American Idol : I hate reality television as a concept and as something that replaced much scripted drama.  Idol jus happens to have replaced Survivor as the most popular.  They are as fake as Pro-Wrestling, but if you enjoy it knowing that, hey, knock your socks off.

Xbox/Xbox 360 (I admit, I kind of hate Xbox, since it ruined gaming) : I'm not sure how it "ruined" gaming... gaming seems alive and well with more gamers (yes, casual gamers "count") than ever.  Did it ruin things for you because the 360 outsells the PS3?  Why didn't the Wii ruin gaming for you with it's gimmicky controller and it's outselling of the 360 and PS3 combined (more or less, I have no idea of current numbers.)
I could try and argue that console gaming has ruined my PC gaming experience, but that way lies nothing good.
I like the XBOX series of consoles, as far as consoles go.  I long wondered why someone didn't just take actual PC parts, instead of proprietary electronics, to make a console before.

Google : Big, successful and influential now is why others hate it, I'm sure.  And conspiracy theorists love big and powerful targets.  I just dislike the whole "world wide web age" naming meme of stupid-sounding childish terms, like Yahoo, Bing, Google, iPod, podcast, blog, etc.  Other than the name, Google won me over long ago... and I'll lose interest in it if a better search engine ever appears.

Justin Beiber (this is justified by the fact that he's 16 and hasn't hit puberty) : I've been so far out of touch of "pop culture" in terms of music and celebrities for so long that I only recognize people like Justin Beiber due to the hatred so many people have for him.  For me, he's a "whatever" - some kid who's currently popular for singing.  Whee, that's not happened before.  I think you really need to be a teenager or younger to care about him, one way or another.

Hannah Montana : Ditto Justin Beiber, but add Disney's "machine" to the mix - people love to hate on the Mouse House.  (admission - I used to bash Disney quite frequently myself in my angrier youth.)

Meh. I like what I like and don't like what I don't like. I have absolutely zero concern about what other people think of the things I like/dislike.

Oh, and in answer to the original question -  I believe a lot of it is 'bandwagoning', where people are just jumping on the hate-mobile because it's perceived as cool. And part of it is just a way to feel superior to the masses - the 'elitistm' that's already been mentioned.

I'm gonna sound horrible here but the only reason that film did so well was because Heath Ledger died. Seriously. If he was still with us, I don't think people would have gone on about it anywhere near as much as they did.
