Since when Is Warhammer/40K hated?

Actually, nevermind the real question is; When did it become popular?

As a British person, I can say this with a fair bit of experience.

It always has been, arguably more so now than ever before. It's one of those things that everyone of perhaps the age of 40-50 knows someone who plays/has played it, or has at least heard of it.

Warhammer is kinda everywhere. There are Games Workshop stores - stores that are just Games Workshop products.

Without Warhammer there would be neither a Warcraft nor a Starcraft. In more than one way.

I don't hate popular stuff, I just hate stupid celebs like Paris Hilton getting attention when real people like great scientist and doctors aren't that is all.

Well if you wanna go there, you should then hate all super star athletes who get paid more than Nobel Prize winning scientists for playing a game of all things. Don't get me started on that tack. Hoo boy, I know you don't wanna hear all that.

And for that matter I hate it that I don't have a job in space, that I don't get paid to play a game of all things and while I don't hate athletes for making so much money, I do hate the people that think they deserve it.

(and Hate is probably 10 times stronger than I really feel about all that)

It's only useful feature that I can check out blog/site updates all in one. Even that gets ruined by my hyperexcibionist friends' status updates on every aspect of their lives.

Yeah, I know I can block it, but sometimes (like 1% of the time) is useful*.

*Because texting me/calling me for a party invitation is so last year, everyone uses Facebook invitations. :pinched:

I have friends like that but why would that make you angry?

It doesn't make me angry, it just spams the newsfeed, making it harder to keep track on blogs/sites.

Then don't have friends? That's kinda the point man. Whatever I guess it's ok if someone doesn't like it.

I think Facebook is great there's nothing like catching up with a friend you hadn't seen in years.

I do agree, but at least some of them spend their money on charities and actually volunteer, but yeah. Most NFL players actually do go to college most the time these days. It the best way to get recruited so they have to keep up their grades. Plus NFL players don't live very long as a new study has shown. They end up like ALI so they need all the money they can get for their medical bills. Image IPB

Facebook is great.
If you want your privacy invaded, annoying messages about pointless trash (FarmVille? No, go away. Please) and to find out who just rode the village bicycle, that is.

My privacy is fine so far. But hey maybe the next time I get on I'll put my social security number on my wall.

You forgot if they just watched a funny commerical, or had a thought, or wanted to say "hi" to everyone.

It's full of important uses in communication!

Oh, and not to forget that creepy person from down the road adding you and posting weird messages on your wall.

Ah, the joys of the internet.

I don't think my privacy has been invaded yet. But I think the new "places" feature is probably the worst idea in the history of the internets. I mean, who actually cares if you are in Starbucks? "Great, looks like Susie isn't in her house! Who wants to make a few quid?"

This is how I see the mentality behind hating popular stuff:

I generally don't HATE things automatically, unless I seriously hear enough stuff about it from friends or other trusted sources to come up with my own opinion.

For the most part I have three levels of opinion before: interested, could be persuaded, and not interested. If I'm interested in something, and it is popular, I'm more inclined towards it. If I'm at the middle stage (could be convinced) I have to be convinced by a good friend to partake in the activity of it. Finally, if I'm not interested, I'll be like "meh" and if it gains massive popularity I will be annoyed.

The main factor that adds hate to the equation is how hard people try to get me interested in something. They don't have to try at all if I was already interested to begin with in the popular thing. At the middle stage, if people I talk to come up with solid arguments for why I should try said thing, I will reconsider; otherwise people who fail the necessary "persuasion checks" with me will just annoy me and push me away from said thing that is popular. If I'm not interested at all, it just feels like people who try to convince me of how cool said popular thing is are trying to shove it down my throat, and when people try to impose their interests on me when I want nothing to do with the popular thing, I end up hating the popular thing more as a sign of rebellion. Sometimes I look into the thing on my own and I come around, but most of the time, my instincts are right, and I hate the thing, and when people are trying to force me to like the thing, it makes me hate the thing more.

I'm sure that was confusing (it was kinda confusing for me to write, too :P), so let me give an example:

I'm an absolute metalhead, but I hate Led Zeppelin (and I realize I'm gonna be flamed for this but I don't care)

I hate Led Zeppelin because initially when I first heard their music, I thought it was ALLRIGHT but nothing special. I didn't have much desire to really get into their music after that and I was ok with the occasional listen. Eventually I start hearing "Stairway to Heaven" over and over again, and while that is one of TWO songs I like, its overplay annoyed me to no end. Then, I began talking to others about music interests and I mention my annoyance at Led Zeppelin. Hearing things like "OMFG LED ZEPPELIN IS THE GREATEST BAND IN HISTORY," or "ROBERT PLANT IS SUCH AN AWESOME SINGER," or "OMFG JIMMY PAGE IS BETTER THAN ANY GUITARIST ON EARTH" just made me sick because of how far from the truth statements like that were. I mean, Robert Plant is a s**t singer and his style sounds like fingers across the chalkboard, Jimmy Page is FAR from being the BEST guitarist on Earth, and Led Zeppelin as a whole are not a really stand-out band.

The fact that people keep trying to impose this band on me makes me sick. Part of my reaction is purely rebellious, true, but damnit if I don't like something, people just gotta accept it.

You just don't get Led Zeppelin. I'm cool with that. You're right though, Robert Plant is not even arguably the best guitar player -- I mean he's way down the list compared to many in his own category, like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, hell Chet Atkins and Les Paul are better guitarists and so is Joe Walsh. Easy enough to topple Robert Plant, too.

But OMFG, You don't LIKE LED ZEPPELIN?!? (kidding.) Are you old enough to have heard them when they were new? That, I think, makes a big difference in a lot of cases. I see kids running around today with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull t-shirts on and I just KNOW they have no real idea who those bands are and what they represented in their heyday.

Forget Stairway to Heaven (yes, probably the single most Overplayed song other than Free Bird) and check out their other stuff. Oh wait, forget I said that, you're not interested. I would disagree that they are not a stand out band, but I am a firm advocate of 'to each their own' and as such I can only say there's more there than meets the ear at first blush.

I totally agree about the concept of folks trying to convince you to be as enthused as they are about something. That's a definite turn off if I express clearly that I am not really interested or not at all interested.

Sorry I have to correct you, but Robert Plant is the lead singer. I wasn't sure if that was a typo or not, though, or if you know something else about the band, such as him playing guitar once in a while.

I'm 24, so no, I wasn't around when they were still playing. I forgot to mention that one of the reasons I started hating them is because I felt they were WAY overrated. I mean, sure each of the band members has SOME measure of talent, but compared to bands such as Pink Floyd or The Who, Zep just doesn't really cut it for me.

Believe it or not I have listened to a large amount of their catalog. Part of that was one of my best friends practically begging me to give them another chance. I was still unimpressed. To this day the only two Led Zeppelin songs I can listen to, if I was forced in a situation to listen to Zep at all, are "Stairway To Heaven" and "The Immigrant Song", and even the Immigrant Song is annoying to me now.
