Have you tried different difficulty settings?

Play the Enginner without using the Combat Drone.

Lazuli: Yes, almost always play hardcore. One play-through on Insanity.

brfritos: Interesting option, thanks.

Life Hacker: Engineer with Dominate and AI Hacking. You can combine that with no-drone if you like.

Between Incinerate and Overload you should have no problem stripping defenses. (Use your SMG or squad for Barriers.)

Just bump it up to Insanity.

Yeah, you can use enemies as a substitute: ME2 Master of Puppets :D

Vanguard without Charge. Played like it is on ME1. This is what I normally what I do with my vanguards (I know, blasphemous).

Champion 4

Squad Cryo 4

Area pull 4

Shockwave 3

Bonus (Normally Reave, Slam or Dominate) 3

Incendiary ammo 3

Charge 2 (Don't use)

I think I like this Dominating-No-Drone-Engineer thing. It's different from the direct-damage types I usually favor. Thanks.

Yeah, I tried a similar setup on my infiltrator (the enemy of my enemy is my friend-you're all my friends now), and it certainly allows you to use your precious mantis/widow ammo much more sparingly , its just after dominating the enemy so heavily either through my own powers (Adept) or my own bullets (Soldier), I found a growing lack of patience to be the biggest problem.

Just make sure you're willing to kick back and let everyone else get their hands dirty while you sip your drink and smile. Impatience will be the only downfall of that strategy.

I'm also thinking of a Vanguard with Squad Cryo Ammo. I haven't tried that either.

that'd be an interesting forced dynamic, mostly if you used charge MUCH less frequently, pretending as if Shepard doesnt have Krogan/Vorcha-like health regen as the current health system does. Especially the combination of those specific ammo powers you wouldnt normally have.

Man its so fun watching your vids because its so contrary to my nature (carefully assess situation, approach prudently, and ensure to inflict maximum damage on enemy weakpoints while subjecting myself to the least amount of damage possible)

I guess in reality, I dont take advantage of the fact that health and shields regenerate, I prefer to operate as if losing them = losing my life (but I can clearly see the value of that from your vids)

I tend to do the same thing. I my mind, the best weapon is a stand-off weapon. I really struggled to use the shotgun. CQC is not my natural way of thinking.

Ah ok. Do you mind listing the builds you have already tried?

Well,

A pretty standard Soldier.
An Assault Sentinel ( my fav).
A Reaving Vanguard.
An Adept ( which i din't play through on. Just didn't enjoy. Liked my Sentinel better for biotics)
An Agent type Infiltrator.
The Shotgun Engineer.

Hmmm. Not a bad idea. Low comfort level, out of the box and all that.

A Claymore soldier is pretty rare, I haven't heard anyone raving about it. Can you even pull off the reload trick under AR?

Yeah, it's boring. I played it because it was the only class I completely skipped in the first game and thought I might be missing something. Nope.

I have been trying the Chargeless Vanguard using only pistols for a few hours now. Pretty fun so far. Have to concentrate fire from the squad to strip shields, so it makes a tactical game.
