Well, I finally managed to find some spare time today, so I am posting some initial results from the character survey last week. Note, all this is simply the raw data from SPSS, so I haven't done any real stratefication to the data just yet. Anyways, here's the document on Google Docs for everyone's pleasure and viewing.

And, after some thought and combing through the data, I decided to count everyone's vote regardless or whether or not they verified their vote for not. I did delete some duplicate votes here and there.

Anyways, I'm starting to play with the compare means tool with SPSS, so we also start seeing how certain votes correlate with others with the help of ANOVA and hypothesis testing.

Furthermore, if any of you guys have SPSS, I have also uploaded the complete data file onto Windows Live Skydrive here for your downloading and analysis pleasure. I am sure there are number of you who know way more statistics than I do.

A full report with histograms and all sorts of other good stuff should be out in a few months, whenever I can get to it...

EDIT: I will be releasing more stratified data on a semi-regular basis, so the links on Google Docs and Windows Live Skydrive will be posted below:

Interesting to see that Garrus is the most popular, according to the survey, probably because he's one of the least polarising characters. And predictably, Jacob has a mode of 5.0. I was a bit surprised to see that Kaidan has the highest standard deviation - I didn't realise he was that polarising.

And poor Morinth gets no respect - lowest mean popularity and a mode of 1.0. I guess there's no love for sex demons.

Unsurprising. Garrus, Liara, Mordin and Tali are at the top. All some of my favorites =]

And, it also appears that Liara has the best romance. Garrus is considered to be the best squadmate.

So Legion and Mordin are the most popular squadmates introduced in ME2 - Mordin even has the lowest standard deviation.  It's interesting to compare their consistent popularity to romanceable characters, who tend to be gain hordes of fans and detractors.  (Garrus, being universally awesome, is the natural exception to this rule.)

8.37 - Garrus
7.99 - Wrex
7.99 - Legion (7.985 vs. Wrex's 7.987)
7.89 - Mordin
7.61 - Liara
7.52 - Tali
7.30 - Kasumi
6.76 - Thane
6.73 - Samara
6.60 - Grunt
6.18 - Miranda
6.07 - Ashley
5.89 - Kaidan
5.81 - Zaeed
5.86 - Jack
4.30 - Jacob
3.32 - Morinth

I'm not surprised.  I'm an avid Kaidan fangirl, but I still have to concede that Liara has the best romance now that LotSB has been released.  I hope that all the romanceable characters get such a good treatment by the time the series ends.  (I think Bioware could probably even manage it for Jacob.  Probably.)

Jacob is epic. Unfortunately, he isn't useful in combat and as for the romance, well...hard to overlook the prize.

He has a good foundation, but isn't executed well.

Also note: "evil" characters that were written to be disliked... are more disliked (Morinth, Jack, Zaeed and to a lesser Degree Miranda).  That is the desired goal of the writers, thus signifying success of those characters.  sadly, Unpopular characters like Jacob are unpoular because they were "meh".  Thus a failure in character design.

The characters that were written to be likable are all at the top of the list, which is no surprise... because they were written to be liked.

If you are a Kaidan fan, my prior polls tell me that Kaidan's average amongst the ladies is at least a point above the total average. And the mode goes up to 10, as well.

I am surprised Tali is so "mid pack." It is a reminder that the world does not revolve around her even if the vocal minority on the forum make it appear that way.

I think this was an interesting way to survey people because it did not force people to pick favorites. It is possible that largest number of people preferred Liara as a LI (for example), yet she is still not the most popular overall.

People have a right to their opinions. My opinion, however, is that people who flat out hate a character for reasons that have nothing to do with said character, or people who flaunt their hate in other peoples' faces, should not be allowed to have an opinion. ^_^

The tali haters are even more immature then what they make out the talimancers to be. Thats a truth. I know some people who legitimately don't like Tali because of her character, and I respect that. Though people that go like "Lololol **** tali throw her and her fans out the airlock" really annoy me.

If this thread heads down the path of commenting on other fanbases, particularly insulting them, I'll lock the thread and ban anyone who participated in the insults.

Yeah, that wasn't me. Because while I do like Jacob and his romance I do not think it was the best-written one. Not by a long-shot.

Thanks for the info!  Pacifien actually posted to similar effect in the Kaidan thread.  (Having excluded repeat votes, Kaidan was found to be the most popular LI with female voters,)

I'm glad to see Wrex was so popular, given that his fanbase is pretty quite. Where are all the Wrex fans???

My opinion of Garrus actually lowered a bit after seeing enough other opinions and posts. I don't actually like him less or anything, but he somehow seems more..."meh". Maybe it's because of his brief non-romance conversations being over too soon, or the largely unoriginal loyalty mission, but nothing seems to stand out about him to me. Hopefully if he's in ME3, Garrus will wind up with more original views and more dialogue overall.
