Here is a pic of a mesh I extruded from a line: http://i.imgur.com/hUyLU.jpg

I put an ordinary sphere next to it for comparison.

Is there a way to add more vertices/faces/polys (I'm not sure which is the proper term) to the extrusion so that it has many faces/vertices to edit on the sides, like the sphere?  Basically the vertices now only follow the original 2d line so I can't mold the shape outside those boundaries.

I find extruding edges is a better practice. In fact, I almost exclusively use the edge extrusion, vertex welding, and create polygon functions. I will deviate when I need to do something tricky or need precision, but, in general, extruding edges allows you to create many more verts where you need them than extruding faces will.

Thanks, I will remember that for next time. For this model I used the quadify mesh, followed by the edit poly modifiers and now it seems to do what I want it to.
