Albeit I'm then left wondering when and where they could set it to avoid establishing an official canon.

I agree. The fans have been with them sinc the beginning. Thinking of people who don't even know the name Mass Effect is weak.
Nope, I'm a fan and I completely disagree. They should do what they're obliged to do from their stake holders - make a decent return on the salaries they are paid - In the process of doing that making a "not sh!t" movie that also appeals to gamers who've played the game since the beginning is an advisable idea.. but it is not of main importance.
The film makers are not obliged to deliver "gamer orgasisms" (besides it being impossible, except in the mind of the gamers themselves). They should deliver a film that will pay the bills first, if they are good at what they do then what ever follows is a bonus.

I'm a huge fan and I agree with JBG2 here. I was a fan of LoTR and I agreed there too. Make a movie that works, that must come first. Not pleasing the interests of a bunch of people interested in all the wrong details and nerdy references that simply would not work in a movie.
In general the philosophy should be "based on" or "inspired by", rather than being an attempted direct copy of ME the game.

You obviously didn't understand what I'd wrote.
He was most likely 28 at the start of ME 1 and 29 by the start of ME2.
Please read before you start to insult someone who corrects you.
Geez, don't act so butt-hurt. I didn't insult anyone. :-S
And you didn't exactly "correct" me either. You just threw in some asumptions, like we all do, because that's all what we can do, asume. You asume A, B and C because of X, Y and Z. Your assumptions make sense, but they're worthless. Don't act as if they are facts. The only facts that we have is Shepard's birthday and the years ME1 and ME2 take place in. The rest is all asumptions.
PS: I have to correct you on Shepard's birthday. Shepard's birthday isn't in April, but the 4th of November. Just checked it out. Seems you mixed up the American dating system with the international dating system, which is actually used in Mass Effect. Shep's birthday is at 4-11-2154, which is the 4th of November.
So maybe he indeed was 28 years old during the entire ME1 game, since November is pretty late in the year.

Mass Effect movie part 1 = Mass Effect 1 game story.
Mass Effect movie part 2 = Mass Effect 2 game story.
Mass Effect movie part 3 = Mass Effect 3 game story.
Each part of the movie should be 3 hours long or there will be no real Mass Effect story in the move.

smudboy is right. The plot in ME2 is much more suitable for an HBO miniseries, with each episode dedicated to one character on the team.

I would like this, but I don't think it will happen. However, I disagree with your assessment; I think good service can be done to the plot without including every conversation and every tiny detail.
Like others, I just really want a good movie. If it is about something other than Shepard, that's awesome. If it is about Shepard, that's awesome too. I understand that movies have to take liberties and shortcuts sometimes, and that is fine, especially since there isn't one specific way that the story goes. If Shepard doesn't do the same things that yours did, who cares? Your playthrough is canon for YOU.
I hope it succeeds -- very few video games have ever been made into good movies, but I have always thought that Bioware's games had the depth to carry a film. It is being made by a good studio, and Bioware's people are in on the production. I have confidence that they can do it well.

I don't want this movie too be made. It will rape this terrific series!
How so? The video game is still there to play. You can even avoid the theatre if you want.
The film in no way affects your game or your version of Shepard. How in the world will it "rape" a video game series that is a totally different experience? Why do people have to be so melodramatic about this stuff?

I feel for whoever is the one that has to write the screenplay. Think about it for a second, I you were tasked to condense ME1 in a 2-3 hour movie, how would you do it? What would you cut? what would you change?
I would do:
Eden Prime - Citadel - Virmire -Ilos. Wich will need to rellocate Liara and Benezia, and cut the Thorian and the Rachni from the story.
Also, depending on how much detail you give to the Citadel part, minor parts like Tali,Garrus and Wrex will be very short or could even be written out.

Well since we're getting into the specifics, I'll call and raise you some.
I would do:
Eden prime
Citadel
Feros (to put emphasis on the chase after Saren and bring some of the
sci-fi mystique with the Thorian and the cool setup of the planet and
location, possibly set up Liara as the asari captured by the Thorian)
Virmire
Ilos
Citadel
Provided of course that there will be more than one movie, otherwise leaving the movie hanging with the Reaper issue is a bad idea.
And if actors are an issue, I damn well demand(*) that Russell Crowe would be Shepard. Shepard needs incredible charisma, and that aura of mature respect and power. Crowe has it on par with the most charismatic actors on the planet, he's a damned good actor, and his looks and physique even match the default Shep. The danger is that with Gladiator and Robin Hood, he's a bit familiar to said roles, borderline typecasted.
* And I DO get to make demands of the council, because I Russell Crowe would rock over everyone else combined for this role. Even Christian Bale, and I'm a Bale fan.

Really people, I wouldn't expect a movie about Shepard, I really wouldn't.
I think (and I hope) that the Mass Effect movie is going to be more along the lines of Halo Legends or The Animatrix. That makes way more sense than a movie about Shepard.

How mankind unites under the Allianc banner, how we jump thru the first Mass Relay
Later how we encounter the Turian patrol, blow them out of the sky, siege of Shanxi and later the liberation of Shanxi. The movie will end with the Council intervention and how we realise how big the galactic community is. Perfect ending for a second movie about Anderson and Saren.

This sounds like a promising and good idea! I second this!
Either this idea of yours, or my idea of a episodic movie along the lines of The Animatrix, Halo Legends or prehaps like Sin City.
