I don't know if it's been speculated on by anyone, but I've been finding the alien ghost ship stories from the Cerberus Daily News to be fascinating. The second of the daily news posts provided the first bit of info that I thought was an interesting development in of itself, beyond the fact that it was a cool idea, when it was announced that the ship was about 8,000 years old. The next entry that was cool in relevance to the greater universe of Mass Effect came on September 24th, when the aliens explained that they decided to enter the ship because their sun was going supernova.
Well, that's odd. A sun going supernova 8,000 years before Mass Effect. And the suns of habitable star systems probable don't really have a tendency to just go supernova. I was sure that in Mass Effect, the supernova that knocked away the Mu Relay occurred 8,000 years ago; the wiki says otherwise. Does anyone who's played through ME1 recently recall when it went supernova?
If there is a connection, then this alien race might know how the dark energy that's blowing up stars in our galaxy works - or even if they don't know what did it, they might be able to put the Council species on the right track.
I'm really hoping that this is the next DLC. Hopefully involving Ash/Kaiden.

Nope. According to the wiki the Mu Relay was pushed away 4,000 years ago.
