Some folks don't seem to like the idea of half-naked fantasy warriors and see them as unrealistic, but in a fantasy setting there is a way of having them that can make sense. I propose a range of 'armours' for a berserker class/specialisation that works on the dexterity/defence attributes.

Now I don't know if we'll see the berserker specialisation in DA2, but the germanic berserker was a warrior who thought that armour was for wimps. They'd tend to charge into battle with a huge two-handed sword or axe wearing little more than wolf-pelt 'armour', complete with wolf-head helmet with fangs drooping over the forehead.

Then you've got the early picts and celts, who'd 'armour' themselves with nothing more than blue woad warpaint. They believed that the painted celtic spirals protected them with magical properties. Now that doesn't sound very clever, but in a game that has magic in it you could actually have this. The pelts/warpaint could boost the character's defence rating magically, and be dependant on the dexterity attribute as to what level you can wear.

Personally I think it could make a great alternative to the usual metal armour. Our male and female berserkers could wear little more than a hide loin-cloth/bikini and have a  whole range of armours consisting of mean looking animal pelts, or different colours and patterns of whole-body warpaint.

Yeah, I guess it's a bit late in the day, but we can live in hope. Posted Image

A Chasind character wearing them would be a good addition to the game. i really dislike the chasind robes in DAO. Although the Chasind Maul was badass!!  I hope they can add more and improve the armor/weapons from the Chasind.

Something like this would be nice:

If that happens, we'll need buckets to prepare for the fans who'll foam at the mouth from pure excitement. Supposedly, they like seeing skin. I know it's a strange concept, but there are actual people out there who like that sort of thing!

Damn fine idea and that would fit an Ash Warrior like a glove, plus the warpaints work on the mabari so why not us. A raise of the mug to the OP.

I think you forgot about the Scottish warriors who only used paint or no paint and charged in the battle naked only with swords or axes. Personally, if I saw that I would run away in the other direction before you turned around to see if I was still there.

I have to thank you for giving examples and sound reasoning, when I first saw this thread I thought it might be far more crude. I personally like this idea, not everyone may have access to metal armour or culturally their armour would be different, not to be provocative (though it certainly helps ;) but because they are raised that way or havn't known much else. I also like the idea that the thought process was heavy metal armour is for wimps. Using this aromour with dexterity checks makes loads of sense

if you have to wear a tin can your too slow

Although heavy armor gives a lot of protection, it hampers movement. Carrying an axe or 2H is heavy enough. While light armor does not hamper the warrior's movement in battle, like the Samurais in Japan, the Scots and the Norsemen. And Yeah, i agree with the Op about the Ash warrior with war paint or the Chasind babarian with the light armor carrying a maul or axe would be cool.

OP I am in agreement with this thread. I find that far too often that it's been done wrong. But history shows that not everyone wore armor or robes to battle. Hell even the early horse riding messengers often wore as little as possible, as to avoid hampering movement in Greece (I'm not saying people would do it in say, Russia or Germany, as that would be pretty insane during the winters).

I think it's a good idea. Much like how certain warpaints empower the Mabari hounds, a more berserker-typed Hawke would be great in similar manner. And a kilt would always be a nice clothing option!

That's all fine and good, but I'd like to think that any smart warrior would chose to wear armor if it was available. It doesn't matter how tough you are - a sword goes through skin a lot easier than it does through metal armor.

Considering that a lot of renowned armorless warriors - Germanic beserkers, Scots, etc. didn't really have a lot of access to armor. These "barbarian" tribes didn't really have much of a means to mass-produce effective armors.

sidenote: not an issue until we actually get mounts in the game, but I would prefer to get climbing/swimming/jumping before tha

Samurais wore heavy scale armour as well.

I'm a big fan of seeing the picts/woads and other, more Barbarous, warrior cultures depicted in some form or another so I mostly agree with this. Plus variety is the spice of life! However I do think there is a danger of going from scantily clad because the culture/personality demands it to scantily clad for scantily clad's sake, which is silly.

I almost posted a picture of Etain from Centurion to go with this, but after looking through the pics I realised she is actually dressed in quite respectable light armor and furs really. Still, I love the use off warrior body/face paint that so often coincides with less actual armor, although I doubt we'll see anything like that in DA2 unfortunately (unless the Nutella smear is part of a whole new range of war paints!)

That's incorrect as far as the berserkers are concerned. Not wearing armour was a choice for them, not a necessity, as historically they were still around when other warriors from their lands were commonly wearing mail and other armours.

Why would you assume this? I think this idea would be cool if it made sense to have it. For instance, for the aforementioned Ash Warriors and Chasind.

What I do not want to see is cover-of-Heavy-Metal gratuitous plate bikinis for no reason other than eye candy. THAT, I would have a problem with.

While you did give sound reasoning, most people are going to see this as a veiled attempt to have half naked chicks running around and so I doubt this will happen. You saw all the complaints when Bethany's breasts were revealed. Now imagine that except without the mage robe to cover her chest. The backlash would be spectacular.

While it's a good idea, BioWare making armor suited for a particular spec seems far outside the realm of possibility. We're frequently told about budget and time limitations.

Also, Red Sonja sucked.
