the Mako should be renamed "the ME guide to drunk driving" iv had to reload more times than I can count because I hit a small bump and go flying and end up getting stuck in the end I ende dup just getting out fo the damn thing for combat and siping crap with my sniper rifle since it was hell of alot easier and got me more exp any ways

the Hammerhead may not be great but its missions where short and easy as hell(oh and completely optional outside of Overlord and even then it was mostly just standard platforming since you could speed past the turrets) and its paper thing armor never hampered me at all because id just park myself out of enemy range and just shoot them till they was dead(not like there was much combat in the hammerhead any ways most of the hammerhead levels where hold tubo and jump)

no it was the mako. I got stuck on one of the geth barriesrs and couldn't move or look down so the geth just lit up the mako. thank god for spalsh damage or I'd have died from that piece of junk exploding. I was wishing for the hammerheads jumping ability but eventiually the splash damage from the rocket powered down the barrier and went on my merry way to peak 15.

I liked the MAKO, I never understood any of the complaints. Meabye the drunk drivers are the ACTUAL drivers and not the cars.

I don't miss it though, the Hammerhead is a dream. I wish BW would patch it to have the armor of a REAL tank.

I liked the Mako, too.
I hate that Hammerhead flying thing.  Give me wheels.  I'm much happier.

A hover-gunship with squad-carrying capability would be my preferred mode of adventure travel.

You can land, have the part you pick disembark and leave a 4th member to fly the gunship for air-support.

Not a bad idea eh?

How about driving arround the mountain? Also, many people forget that for the most part going arround on uncharted planets was optional. If you don't feel like stepping into Armstrongs footsteps then don't but having the option for others is hardly a flaw. I found the moon missions with the Earth vista quite an atmospheric experience. Driving into a giant crater that looks so tiny from our home planet and simply having the freedom of approching the base however I wanted certainly beats linear corridor levels.

To the title question:
It's a bit of both aspects and most problems can be traced back to flawed implementation and engine limitations, but the basic idea was and is great and should have never been abandoned.

Planet design.

It was the planet design, and Bioware should have realised this before dumping the scanning minigame on us.

Both. Planet design and the concept itself was pretty boring.

Of course the hammerhead isn't any better...well at least they didn't randomly generate the planets in ME2 so it's actually an improvement over ME1.

I'd be totally ok with BW dropping the whole vehicle part of ME for ME3 in favor of one or two one-hours sidequests on foot, though.

Dumped it on us? No, no...

The proper term is screwing us over yet again.

Wonder what crack-pot thing ME3 will bring...

Political slander mini game against the council perhaps?  Image IPB

So I'm playing ME1 and whilst driving around in the Mako, all of the old negatives float up as I'm bouncing down the side of a moutain after spending the last 10 minutes trying to get up it in vain.

But I then start thinking, whilst driving along a more-or-less flat section 'hang on, the Mako is actually a lot of fun to drive. Maybe it's not the Mako that was the problem, but the planet design?' I'm wondering what everyone else thinks - was the Mako undone by poor terrain design, or was it just a bad vehicle?

I agree 110%

Smooth out the terrain a bit and mosts of the Mako's problems go away.

I agree. It's not the Mako itself that's the problem; it's the unnecessarily rough terrain that's the problem, which somehow existed on at least 95% of the landable planets. Some of them were next to impossible to explore due to the insanely steep heights.

The Mako was fine. As others have said in this thread, the true problem was the terrain, which looked like a bunch of procedural poly maps generated in Bryce3D. The story missions, and Bring Down The Sky, were all perfectly fine because they were built around the Mako. Amazingly, the vast majority of the Uncharted Worlds weren't, even though that was still the primary mode of getting around on them. They should have left the Mako in and spent the time they wasted on the Hammerhead on better Mako-centric level design.

The ability to get in and out of the vehicle is another huge plus when it comes to the Mako, as well as the lack of stupid loading transitions between sections. Get out of the Mako any time, walk over to anything you want, get back in any time. Drop out and engage targets on foot if you like. I won't even get into the Hammerhead's lack of durability or an actual rotating turret, which has already been widely lamented.

All in all, the game design of the vehicle sections in ME1 was far superior, even if the level design generally sucked.

One thing I'm curious about, which version of the game(s) are people playing when they comment on things like this?  Because in the original version (xbox) the controls for the Mako sucked complete ass, aiming was atrocious, and it was extremely slow for the distance being traveled.  The planets were only part of the problem, but they did highlight the flaws of the Mako.  If anyone doubts this, I can go into more detail.

As for the Hammerhead, it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it avoids all of the problems of the Mako.  It handles like a dream, fires much faster, and is refreshingly fast.  I'd take the low armor and awesome controls over heavy armor and infuriating controls anyday.

I played the pc version at several points in the story I ended up losing control for one reason or another and ended up getting stuck in a wall (most recently for me was the trench run on Ilos trying to turn a corner)

Bad planet design, and far too much of it overall. I could have stood some mako playing in ME2, just not as much of it as ME1.

I need not say anymore.

I always thought the slopes of the mountains were way too steep. It's okay for a couple mountains here and there, but every mountain on EVERY planet?

I only had an issue once with the mako and that was when I couldn't get out of some ditch on some planet that I can't remember. Other than that I loved it.

Never understood why people hated the mako, driving was a breeze, I could twist and turn in mid air, land the way I wanted too, and off I went.

The mako was ACE!! I loved it, so much fun, much better than the bloody hammerhead.

The terrain was very bad, and made it seem like the mako was poor. All the devs had to do was tweak the mako a bit, overhaul the planet design, and planet exploration would have been EPIC.

Pretty much agree with what most people have said here in that the problem wasn't the Mako but the actual planets. I would add that it was also a tad bit "over used" in the game and it wouldn't have hurt to have had some planets where you didn't need the Mako at all or there was an alternative way to explore the terrain.

I will say it's replacement the "Mario tank" is just awful on so many levels. Obviously the Alliance recognised that their soldiers inability to jump had to be compensated for so they made there 100 ton tanks do the jumping for them. Oh and the less said about using steam vents to make a damn tank jump higher the better (hence the name Mario Tank).

I would like to see SOME planetary exploration in ME 3 all that needs to be done is get the balance right. I doubt we will see the Mako make a return though which is a shame. I just hope we don't see the Mario Tank again in ME 3 either.

Said it before, I'll gladly say it again; the Mako was not terrible. It simply required patience & self-control. It was difficult but possible to have a fun, enjoyable gunfight it that thing. Not really true in the Hammerhead. Don't get me started on the 'alarm' damage system for the Hammerhead, either.
