forgive me if im bringing up stuff that has already been stated but im not about to read through all the pages of this thread.

So here is my story, I played ME1 to death, played ME2 to death, life was good.  I bought the new Xbox slim to get on live (couldnt with my previous xbox) and play the ME2 DLCs, and while transporting my data over my gamertag became corrupted.  Long story short i lost everything.

So instead of whining and ****ing i thought it would be a good time to reconnect with ME1 since it had been a long time since i had played it, and I basically had no choice anyway since i wanted my Shepard back.

Once i fired up the Mako's engine again for the first time in forever, it brought back all my old memories I had had with it....GOOD MEMORIES!  To be perfectly honest, ive played ME1 more times then i can count and never NEVER have i had any trouble with the Mako.  I really dont understand at all what the issue with it is.  Everywhere ive wanted to get to, ive gotten to with little to no difficulty.  I mean, are all you guys that hate it trying to scale 90 degree mountains all the time and cursing it out because you cant?

The Mako segments I loved.  More planet variety would have made it much better but it really does amaze me all the people that hated it, because i constantly find myself scratching my head wondering what the heck is wrong with the Mako.  As far as im concerned that little thing is a  rugged BEAST.  Sure it could definitely be improved (what cant?) but i really dont feel it deserves the hate it gets at all.

Agreed.  A couple of days before ME2 came out, I sat down and played almost non stop through Mass Effect 1 and I did EVERYTHING.  Went through every planet and grabbed every mineral / thresher maw / base etc.  And I didn't have a single problem.   I really loved the Mako, particularly those moments on snow planets with the wind cursing through and the hazy distant sun.  Great moments and hate that they are now gone...

But I doubt we'll see it ever again.

I'm still hanging out for a big old style open world and a Mako DLC.

Wow, I never realised this thread would be so popular! It seems that essentially there's a difference between those who want more immersive gameplay (favours Mako) and those who want run-and-gun shooting (favours Hammerhead).

Would a viable solution be perhaps be to just use big vehicles like the Mako on mission-essential planets (so in ME1 - Feros, Noveria, Virmire etc) and the Hammerhead on non-mission planets. Or maybe carry both vehicles and you get to choose which one you want to run with? The Hammerhead would be better for milk-run missions, whereas the Mako is better suited to hard fights.

The whole vehicle sysyem needs to be retooled, both the MAKO and the HAMMERHEAD had control problems.

To me, the HH is a Mako with the following differences:
- faster
- faster destroyed
- jumps a bit higher
- has a boring spamrocket instead of two tactical interesting armaments
- allows no free exploration/exiting
- allows no free saving

All in all: Mako was more fun for me. Sorry.

The first time on that vast and seeming lifeless desert planet, when that thresher maw suddenly broke through the surface, is unforgettable.

For the rest, I blame it on the bad planet design. The skies, though, the skies, watched from up one of those mountains, they were terrific and beautiful... *sigh*

Give me ME2 with free planet exploration with a mako as in ME1, and also role-play-wise some time to explore as I want, and I will be a very happy player.

I liked the mako. I enjoyed using the thrusters at the top of a peak and flying all over the place, and my favourite: Running over Geth!

IMHO, What will be fun:
1) Make the Mako upgradeable, just like the ship / weapons -- shields, guns, etc
2) Do the something for the hammerhead
3) Let you choose on what you what to use on any given world or mission,,,
4) Free exit to explore / Save
5) I love to look at the sky -- the moon(s) and sun(s)

It was definitely a combination of both. The planet designs were awful to be sure. Still, the Mako still had its fair share of problems. For me, the Mako's biggest problems were it's:

1. Handling and Control- It was a cumbersome ride to be sure. Driving and turning felt like a chore sometimes because it felt a little inaccurate and sometimes even unresponsive. In addition, there were times where I wanted it to go in one direction and it would go in another.

2. Physics- How many times have we had to go up or down a mountain only to have the thing drop on its side or flip upside-down and struggle to get it back into the upright position? It also happens during heated combat when you're driving around and you find yourself struggling to get it back on its wheels while the enemy is cutting your barriers and/or armor to shreds and the game won't even let you out of your vehicle.

There's more but those have been covered plenty of times.

I guess its all in prospective, I liked the mako personally. Yet I have a drivers licence and drive an SUV so I know how to drive a big multi-wheel drive veichle up a hill or around a planet. That and I poplayed ME1 for PC. I found it fun used to shut off the back ground music and cranked up my johnny cash, zz top and CCR and just drove around the planets. Pop a wheelie on a hill Listening to "Midnight Special" or Fortunate Son and tell me that isnt a great feeling

I love the mako the firepower is just amazing the only thing I hated was that I had to climb those mountains to get to a the base at the very top and I used to fall of the mountain all the time so think it's the level design that was bad.

Same here. Great vehicle, armored ATV, questionable physics, boring levels to drive around. Would be happy to see one in the SR2 cargo bay again, assuming we had better physics and suitable terrain to drive it over.

I don't see the point with driving a vehicle in an sci-fi RPG, the how you get to a mission is irrelevant, only dialogoues that matter for the characters and the plot is relevant.  Pointless things is a waste of my time.

What I loved about the Mako was that it actually felt like a tank in durability and had the firepower of a tank. I didn't really care too much for it's handling/control and the physics involved. At times it felt more like I was trying to ride a wild animal than controlling a tank, especially on the PC version.

What I loved about the Hammerhead was the handling, it was alot easier and funner to control the Hammerhead than the Mako. I didn't like the paper thin armor and the firepower on it felt alot weaker than what my Shepard carried.

Personally, I'm hoping for a combination of the Mako and the Hammerhead. Something with the guns of the Mako with the maneuverability of the Hammerhead. It also has to be able to take more damage than the Hammerhead.

I too will agree,  I can't imagine the number of people who cried about not being able to go over steep mountains?  out of this number of people i wonder how many bothered to notice the nice incline path just to the side.  It was called at least once that driving the mako was a mini game so i assume that the maps were like the puzzle (very easy puzzle).  Still though i never had any problems and thought it was fun.

The only time I had a problem was that one planet where there was a deposit on top of a nearly impossibly-steep peak. I always assumed that one deposit was due to a level designer getting really ticked off that day and wanting revenge. LOL.

It took me 1 hour to get it the first time. But I had a sense of accomplishment after that.

Believe or not, this is what I call "fun". XD

A valid point, unless you make the vehicle a mission component. And ME is a hybrid TPS-RPG, not a turn-based RPG like Baldur's Gate, so any driving has to be part of mission or mini-game, otherwise its just a distraction. If some missions required a vehicle to accomplish the objective (as opposed to just getting there), having a choice between hovertank or wheeled AFV would become a tactical choice.

But as you say, when we're just talking about travelling to the mission, I'm glad Joker's doing the driving...Image IPB

Really? You don't like to feel the vastness of the universe by travelling there yourself? Instant transportation really ruins immersion for me.

And i personally loved the mako, awesome vehicle. I never could find a reason why people despised the vehicle so much when it was those damn hills that pissed everyone off. There is nothing wrong with the mako.

I'm don't care if I get hated for this. I loved the Mako, it drove and handled wonderfully. It can drive up vertical walls. That was awesome. I really liked exploring the planets & the long elevator rides. I felt so immersed into the game like I was there experiencing the story. I cried when I saw the Mako destroyed in Mass Effect 2. :(

I do agree on some planets it really did feel bare like there was nothing there. In my opinion, I do think it was lack of level design for the Mako to drive around on the different planets. I loved using the map to understand the terrain. I guess the devs made tons of planets and maybe where running out of ideas for things to do on some of the planets. A lot of extra side quests from Mass Effect 1 never came up in Mass Effect 2 such as the Legion of One Medallion story, or the alien story that you were knocked out and transported back in time from touching the floating silver alien artifact, or even what happened to the Baterrian bad guy who escaped after trying to crash a asteroid into a populated planet. (I loved chasing down the monkey that took the satellite part that was funny). I hate scanning the planets in ME2, but I was a little happier when they upgraded the scanning to go faster in ME2.

The Mako wasn't that bad on the Xbox 360, but on the PC it's a completely different story.

I loved the Mako. The flipping on the back, and poor planet design no. I kept wishing to see moments to use the Mako on jungle terrains or somewhere with different terrain. I would always laugh at the crazy physics involved when I would fall off a mountain and keep on tickin'.

Bring it back, even it was just a planetary scout game.

I figured it would come back. If you look in the hanger after you get off the elevator, there is one extra hook left in front of the Hammerhead. Looks good for a Mako fit. Or strap it to the floor. The Mako was fun.

I have done some crazy drops, flips and jumps with the Mako. The Mako was like a Super spider with turbo that can take more than one hit. It regenerates easily as long as you find cover. That's why I loved it. Any of the new Mass Effect 2 vehicles you really can't do the same crazy things with.

The Mako itself isn't that bad. Sure, if its flaming, a ten-foot fall will kill it (I wish that was a joke) but it really is pretty good in comparison to other action-game vehicles out there, such as the Battlefield series or Halo (ending tofinal level of Halo CE anybody?). I like it more than the hammerhead. Shields just take too long to recharge. But most problems ar ejust planet-design (Ontacrom for example)
