Random Items Disappearing + Question About Cespenar

Okay...

Well I've played BGII many times over the last ten years... and I've noticed that in every run through I make, there will be at least one or two items that mysteriously vanish from my inventory over the course of the game.  I've lost weapons, rings, etc... very recently I noticed that Viconia no longer had the Amulet of Power that she had been wearing since SoA!

Now, I know what you're about to say.  "When an NPC gives you items and your inventory is full, it will drop stuff from your inventory to make room for new items."  Or, "Make sure you pick up all the items off the ground once you resurrect a character."  The thing is, I've always been extremely careful to make sure none of the above situations happen, and the fact that this has been a reoccuring problem over ten years and as many playthroughs makes me wonder...

Is this a bug?  That random items suddenly just vanish without a trace?  I've only used the official Bioware patches, I don't have anything like the G3 Fixpack, since I've been fortunate enough not to suffer from many bugs in my games (except for this problem!)

And I'm almost positive this is a bug, since I'm 99% certain I haven't accidentally been dropping items or leaving them behind.  I just wanted to check to see if anyone else has suffered from this problem, knows what causes it, and knows how to fix it.

Also, regarding my question about Cespenar.  I have the Golem Manual and already upgraded it to Stone Golems.  I also have a Clay Golem page, however, Cespenar doesn't notice I have any components to upgrade.  Is this a bug?

I think this could be caused by Nishruus & Hakeashars if you don't install the Fixpack, or at least Balderdash.



Is there a reason you're not patching bugs? What sort of bug exactly would convince you that you'd rather patch them?



I think the golem book upgrades go from flesh to clay to stone to iron? So the clay golem would be a downgrade from stone, although personally I'm more scared of clay than stone golems.

Eh, I always figured Bioware's patches were good enough... since I haven't run into gamebreaking bugs, just annoying ones, I never really felt it necessary to go spend an extra five minutes downloading G3 Fixpack or Balderdash or whatever.



Is there a reason why Nishruus and Hakaeshars do this?

 OK from the manual (which is also pretty buggy)

The nishruu have no physical attacks at all, however they can be hurt by physical attacks. Each time a nishruu touches a target wizard and wraps its tendrils around him there are two major effects. First of all, magical items with charges that the target possesses will be drained by one charge, destroying them if only one remains. The second is it causes the wizard to lose one memorized spell, this is chosen at random, however it will consume the highest level possible.

So they are supposed to steal charges from wands etc, and destroy the wand once all the charges are gone. They are not supposed to affect items that don't have a charge property, like the amulet of power. Unpatched, they can randomly destroy just about any magic item with no warning, patched they do not.

Version 4 - July 4, 2007Dropped the Nishruus and Hakeashars Eating Non-Magical Items fix. In Throne of Bhaal, the opcodes responsible for this bug have been disabled with the official patch. In Shadows of Amn, the bug is unfixable. The component has been moved to the Super Happy Fun Lucky Modder Pack and renamedClean Up Leftover Default(0) Headers as it does clean up a lot of extraneous junk from a number of item files.

I ... I just can't even express ....

When investing time into a Baldur's Gate 2 playthough, I want as many fixes as humanly possible. It's no fun when you're half way through the game and you encounter a bug that could potentially destroy the game for you.

I share your sentiments.  5 minutes of downloading to fix, is it thousands, or at least hundreds of known bugs?  Um... yeah, tiny time investment for a BIG payoff is worth it I'd say.

None of the bugs that the fixpack fixes are game stoppers. Personally, having read through the changelist, I find there are FAR too many areas where I do not care for the changes that they made, and I'm not interested in tiny "fixes" to bugs that don't come up, or are barely noticeable when they do when it means giving up gameplay elements that I enjoy the way they presently are.



Now, if you're going to play without the OFFICIAL patches...that's lunacy, because there -are- serious gamestopping bugs without that. Especially in BG1.
