Those outlandish designs would fit in DA universe? Seriously?

The DA universe just got revamped, son.

How would I have forgotten? Silly me. I guess that start since Awakening. The first time I saw Vigilance, I should have known that not only the cake, but also the low-fantasy stuff is a lie.

DA was never low fantasy to begin with. And what's wrong with Vigilance? That sword was bad***. I'm hoping it appears sometime in DA2 so that Hawke can wield the Warden's stolen sword. If it's the outlandishness of the sword that bothers you, might I also point out that you can get a sword that's basically made out of kryptonite from Warden's Keep.

No, seriously, and I know a lot of people will hate me for simply saying, but...

that video looked like a lot of fun.

Oh, and 2h weapons were also stupidly huge in DA:O. Starfang was about as tall as my player character.

But I can understand why people ignore that, seeing as how they need reasons to dislike DA2 and all.

I Agree.
Some people here want bioware to fail because they didn't do want they wanted, this and that. Some people here in the forums  feel so entitled as if DAO wasn't made by the Devs when they were crying for a quality RPG.

I have my concerns about the gameplay speed, but I'm not about to judge the game based on this video only with an exaggerated protagonist. I'm still waiting for the PC gameplay without the exaggerated Hawke, but so far there are a lot of positives from the video.

;););)

And apparently many people love setting up straw men.

The point is not the difference of cultural origin of the weapons. It's the fact that the weapons in Dynasty warrior are too goddamn fancy for a low fantasy setting, while some are even just there for the sake of being"something new", and thus have little to no convincing practicality.

a. those weapons there are based/copied from RL weapons so they have nothing to do with having or not having a low fantasy setting aslong they don't sparkle or somesuch

b. DA is not a low fantasy setting, it is a dark fantasy one

c. I doubt spears would be something new, but considering that even horses or swimming/climbing would be "something new" I can see how you could think that

Before DAO was out, did they not say DAO is not a high fantasy, thus would not have many kind of monsters like in Forgotten realms? Maybe I took it wrong then. Or maybe the dev team took a different turn.

Maybe a few of them in dynasty warrior 1 were based/ copied from real life weapon, but I assure you Lu Bu did not use a fan in a battle. And please, PLEASE do not have me talk about the other horror that they inflict upon this world...

Dragon Age is a high fantasy, and a dark one at that. A low fantasy is more rational in a real world sense, whereas DA's events are not rational, even if they are explained in the game.

I can see how Vigilance can be considered too fancy by some, but the sword in the game play video and the screen shots is in the "vanilla" DA:O. It's the design of Sten's sword from his companion quest.

fan? of course he didn't

I talked about spears, and if you continue to use dynasty warriors as example let me point out that many of the characters change their weapons half a dozen times depending on which game of the series you play

I've read the pro/anti sword arguments. I still say the sword looks too big for the animations being performed.

It's possible to be spectacular without exaggeration. The reason I don't like the sword is that it verges on caricature. And please, no one needs to lecture me about Medieval German mercenaries because it's still conjecture as to whether or not they actually used those 5 ft. swords in battle.

Except 9000 times fatter.

I did like the vigilance sword, and I liked most of the stuff about the gameplay video, except the sheer size of the sword. And the whole 'twirling it like a lightsaber' intro... considering its size.

I come back from an ISP outage to this. Well, that's a nice surprise.

I have to say, this looks totally awesome. I was never a fan of either the art style or the combat of Origins. I loved Origins *despite* those things, so I really like what I'm seeing here. The graphics look way, waaaaay better and the animations (and the facial animations!) also look much improved. And it looks like they turned the "combat fun" dial up several notches.

I do so love to reave hordes of enemies and watch them explode into piles of goo. Not sure if I'd want the whole game to play like that, but this looks like Varric's exaggeration at work and honestly it looks like fun. You can see the new melee AoE focus of the warrior class pretty clearly, which is really tempting me to play a warrior because I like that sort of thing. I anxiously await seeing what the more normal combat looks like but I'm so, so glad the DA team listened to the feedback they got about Origins' weaknesses. Great job guys!

But that is due to the problems with animation and not the size of the weapon, and you can't expect them to make an animation for all kind of swords and hammers and axes, or that depending on the height/build of your companions these will ook differently, we speak of Bioware here, 3d/differing animations like these were never their strenght, they already improved a lot but still

Fyi for those who don't know but a claymore type of sword is supposed to be around 54-57 inches give or take a few. Wiki me if you like but I'm pretty sure on that. So the fact that the sword is the size of the character is well fairly normal. I think if anything it's the width that is getting me. And if that is console awesome graphics once again. Image IPB

To add to this, longswords were often anywhere between 3 1/2 to 4 feet long (between 1 and 1.2 meters for the rest of us in the world who use proper measurements).  Therefore, it makes sense for a 2 handed sword to be close to 5 feet or longer (i.e. slightly larger than claymore)

He uses a fan in 5. That is an example I make to point out how much seriousness those people who keep milking Dynasty warriors have. If you want spears, fine. But not used like the way Lu Bu use them in DW.

Metal fans are a real weapon. Most of the weapons I remember off the top of my head from Dynasty Warriors are based on real ones, they just look fantastical to people who aren't familiar with Chinese martial arts weaponry.

I'm a Chinese, and I know what is used for war and actual battles and what is for martial art.
If you don't know the kind of fan I was talking about, check out Lu Bu in DW5.

Hmmm...A lot of it I like. The Graphics look improved, and now that I've seen it, I think I'm beginning to like the faster combat speed.

Still not exactly a fan of the Darkspawn...I suppose I think they looked scarier in Origins.

And...wow...are all of our enemies going to explode like that from a sword? I'm not against blood and gore as such, but that's more than a little over the top it seems.

Fair enough. I haven't played a DW game since 3 I think. I don't think they're too concerned with realism either, I just wanted to point out that metal fans are a real thing. :P

Varric's embellishment appears to be quite in the favor of Hawke. The gameplay looks fluid, fast, and rather different from the almost robotic pace of Origins. Some things look a bit too different, but those are the things that are obviously exaggerations, so no worries. Hopefully we get to see more clear (-ish) videos in near future!
